Luciano Spalletti's 'pure passion' will turn Juventus into Serie A title contenders, says Andrea Cambiaso

Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso has praised newly appointed coach Luciano Spalletti for the passion he has brought to the the club since his appointment. The defender praised Spalletti's ability to communicate his ideas clearly to the group and believe the ex-Italy manager's passion and clear communication it can propel Juventus to the Scudetto.

Spalletti swoops in to salvage Serie A season

Spalletti replaced Igor Tudor as Juventus coach after a difficult spell that saw the team lose form and confidence. Tudor had started the season brightly, winning his first three matches, including a thrilling 4-3 victory over Inter in the Derby d’Italia. However, a chaotic 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund marked the beginning of a steep decline, as Juventus went on to draw five consecutive games. Things worsened with three straight defeats to Como, Real Madrid and Lazio, during which the team failed to score in their last four matches. These results led to Tudor’s dismissal.

Spalletti’s arrival has already brought positive changes. Under his leadership, Juventus have registered one win and one draw, scoring three goals. Beyond results, Spalletti has revitalised the dressing room, instilling renewed energy, belief, and tactical clarity as Juventus look to rebuild confidence and return to their winning ways.

In an interview with , Cambiaso praised Spalletti’s passion and clarity in communicating his ideas to players. Cambiasso said: “Pure passion: a technician is this and much more. He gets into your head, he gets to you. Sometimes he can be original in what he says, but he always gets the point.

“In just a few days, he’s brought a lot of new things to the group. And compared to the man I knew in the national team, he’s changed a lot.”

Cambiaso also highlighted Spalletti’s meticulous attention to detail and his hands-on approach in preparing the team, saying: “Attention to detail in every moment of the job: from the goal kick to the throw-in to the kick-off.”

“He lives for football 24/7. I think he watches thousands of games. His method is a modern way of teaching football.”

Are Juventus contenders for the Serie A title?

Spalletti has urged Juventus to remain ambitious and not give up on their Scudetto hopes, insisting it is far too early to rule themselves out of the title race. The experienced coach, who took charge following Tudor’s dismissal, believes Juventus must rediscover their fighting spirit and consistency to climb back into contention. Spalletti has vowed to use his vast tactical knowledge and experience to help the team compete at the highest level once again. Earlier this week, striker Dusan Vlahovic called on his teammates to reflect deeply, noting that the club has already gone through three coaching changes in a short period. Spalletti echoed those sentiments, emphasising that true success comes from the players’ mentality and commitment on the pitch. He believes the squad possesses the quality needed to challenge for the title, provided they show greater unity, discipline, and belief in the months ahead.

Teun Koopmeiners says he is also reaping the benefits of Spalletti's arrival, as he feels he is finally being played in the correct position after struggling under previous coaches Thiago Motta and Tudor. Spalletti has moved the Netherlands international into the three-man defence, instead of pushing him further up the field where he has struggled to make an impact.

Cambiaso echoed Spalletti’s sentiments, emphasising how the team has fully embraced the coach’s leadership and shared ambition to chase the Scudetto. He said: “When he told us in the locker room at Continassa, we all followed his lead. Before Cremona, we were six points behind the leaders; after Cremona, we’re four. It’s a question of numbers.”

Pirates GM Has Very Clear Stance on Paul Skenes Trade Discussions

The Pirates’ playoff drought reached a decade this year. Pittsburgh finished the season 71-91 at the bottom of the NL Central, but the franchise does have one big piece of the puzzle figured out.

One of the best pitchers in baseball is on their roster in Paul Skenes. Although the Pirates’ putrid results have led to Skenes hearing his name in trade rumors, general manager Ben Cherington asserted any teams who ask for last year’s NL Rookie of the Year are quickly shot down.

"The question gets asked, and it's always respectful," Cherington said at the MLB general managers meetings via ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. "Teams have to ask the question. I suspect that won't end. But the answer's been consistent."

The 23-year-old righthander has finished each of his two MLB seasons with a sub-2.00 ERA. Skenes recorded a MLB-best 1.97 ERA this year, with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal the next closest at 2.21. Skenes had 216 strikeouts over 32 starts in 187 2/3 pitched on the year and is the clear favorite to receive the NL Cy Young Award.

Run support has lacked behind Skenes’s dominance as the Pirates scored just 583 runs as a unit this year, the lowest total in the MLB. Pittsburgh hopes to build around the dominant righty as they await the arrival of 19-year-old Konnor Griffin, MLB Pipeline’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 9 pick in the 2024 MLB draft. Bubba Chandler, another top prospect, made his debut this season when the Pirates called him up in August as the team hopes he can become a mainstay at the top of their rotation alongside Skenes.

Skenes remains under team control for four more seasons, which could net the Pirates a massive haul if he eventually becomes available on the trade market. For now, though, that’s not the case and Cherington aims to build around his elite ace.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. Leaves Yankees Game Early With Apparent Leg Injury

Jazz Chisholm Jr. left the Yankees’ game against the Astros early Thursday after he came up gingerly when he tagged out Jose Altuve as he attempted to steal second base.

Chisholm's glove and Altuve's helmet appeared to make contact with the Yankees' second baseman's knee on the play. After the inning-ending throw out, Chisholm took a moment to gather himself before slightly limping off the field. He grabbed toward his left knee as he eventually jogged to the dugout. You can watch the full sequence below:

Chisholm stayed in the game and took his at-bat in the next inning, but he struck out on three pitches and left the game shortly thereafter.

The Yankees then announced that he was pulled from the game due to knee contusions in both knees per SNY.

According to Gary Phillips of the , the multiple knee contusions happened on different plays. It appears Chisholm aggravated his left knee on the play with Altuve, however it's currently unclear the other play where he suffered the contusion to his right knee.

On the season, Chisholm is slashing .243/.341/.501 with 28 home runs and 70 RBIs for the Yankees.

Ten Incredible Stats From the 2025 MLB Season

The 2025 MLB regular season has ended, and focus has shifted to the opening round of the postseason. Before we do that, it's time to reflect on what has been an incredible 162-game campaign over the last six months.

We've been looking inside the numbers all season, so here's a final look at the most incredible stats from the 2025 season.

204 — Aaron Judge's wRC+, which was 32 points better than any other qualified hitter. Shohei Ohtani came in second at 172, leading the National League. That means Judge was a 32% better hitter than Ohtani this year. Wild. For comparison, it was his second-best wRC+ ever, with 2024's 220 still leading the way.

210 — George Springer's wRC+ after the All-Star break, the best in baseball. A's rookie slugger Nick Kurtz finished second at 199. The 36-year-old Springer discovered that the Fountain of Youth exists somewhere near the Rogers Centre and had his best season since 2019. He notched career highs in batting average (.309) and on-base percentage (.399), and slugged .560 with 32 home runs, 84 RBIs, and 106 runs. Springer ranked third in baseball behind Judge and Ohtani with a career-best wRC+ of 166. His OPS (.959) jumped an 285 points this season in his mid-30s. I'll have what he's having.

38 — Stolen bases by Juan Soto to tie for the NL lead with Oneil Cruz … Yeah, you read that right. Not Elly De La Cruz, Trea Turner or Corbin Carroll, but . Even crazier? The $765 million man swiped 27 bags after the All-Star break to lead all of baseball. Soto had 34 stolen bases over the past three seasons combined entering 2025.

6.1 — Fernando Tatis Jr.'s fWAR, which was sixth in the NL, one spot ahead of Soto, who slashed .263/.396/.525 with 43 home runs, 105 RBIs, and 120 runs. By comparison, Tatis went .268/.368/.446 with 25 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 111 runs scored. The difference? Defense. Tatis was seventh in the NL with 15 defensive runs saved, while Soto finished at -7.

6.6 — Tarik Skubal's fWAR, best among MLB pitchers, edging Paul Skenes by 0.1. Skubal will undoubtedly repeat as the AL's Cy Young winner after going 13–6 with a 2.21 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 2.45 FIP and 241 strikeouts against 33 walks in 195 1/3 innings. He's still the best in the business.

10 — Wins for Skenes despite an MLB-best 1.97 ERA. The likely NL Cy Young winner finished the season 10–10 with a 2.36 FIP and 216 strikeouts against 42 walks in 187 2/3 innings. It's a crime that the Pirates aren't better when he's on the mound.

25.2 — Launch angle for Cal Raleigh, highest in baseball by 2.1 degrees and a career-high by 2.7. Raleigh was also fourth in barrel% (19.5), so it's not hard to see how he was able to blast an MLB-high 60 home runs. The Big Dumper became a national star in 2025.

45.1 — Hard-hit percentage for Kyle Schwarber this season, a career high. The man who made himself more money than anyone in baseball during the 2025 season led the NL in the stat and finished 0.5% behind Aaron Judge. The 32-year-old slugger also notched career-highs in home runs (56), RBIs (132), wRC+ (152), slugging (.563), and fWAR (4.9). A big performance in a contract year.

99.4 — Hunter Greene's average fastball velocity, tops in baseball among starting pitchers. It was a strong season for Reds starter as he went 7–4 with a 2.76 ERA. Health is the only thing standing between him and ace status. Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski came in second at 99.0 mph. Not surprisingly, Mason Miller's fastball led all qualified relievers at 101.2 mph.

-424 — The Rockies' run differential, which was the worst MLB has seen since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. The modern era began in 1900, so we'll just say it's the worst ever. The previous record of -349 was held by the 1932 Boston Red Sox, so Colorado “beat” it by runs! The Rockies lost 119 games, which was two fewer than the record-setting 2024 Chicago White Sox, but they were arguably a worse team. Colorado has lost 100-plus games in three straight years and has a .356 winning percentage (231–417) over the past four years. The team's ownership group should be stripped of the team at this point.

Bonus Number

.409 — Any guesses on this one? That's the Mets' winning percentage after having the best record in baseball on June 12. New York was 45–24 on that date and went an excruciating 38–55 over the rest of the season to fall out of the postseason picture. Despite a $323 million payroll, the Mets were eliminated on the final day of the season and will spend a long offseason dwelling on it.

Yankees Find New Ways to Make Season More Depressing With Blooper-Filled Sequence

The Yankees have been in a tailspin for months and can't pull themselves out of it.

New York is under .500 since mid-June, and a series of deadline acquisitions have not only failed to light a spark in the clubhouse, they have backfired to a nearly comical degree as the players the pinstripes traded for actively contributed to losing games right off the bat. The vibes are so bad even former Yankees are suffering awful strokes of luck; Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles playing in an alumni game this weekend.

And on Sunday, the team found a new way to make the season even more depressing with a brutal blooper-filled fielding sequence.

New York was losing to the visiting Astros, 5-1, in the top of the ninth in a game that already went sideways thanks to Aaron Boone getting ejected in the third while arguing over balls and strikes. With men on second and third with one out, Ramón Urías hit a blooper into shallow left field, which should have resulted in a catch for an out with no runners advancing. It wouldn't have been an easy play, but a very makeable one.

But that isn't how 2025 is going for the Yankees.

What happened instead was three Yankees defenders letting the ball drop between them all. But the lowlights were not done coming. Cody Bellinger, realizing the runner at third had held up while the ball dropped because there was only one out, quickly scrambled to recover and tried to save a run by gunning the ball home. Unfortunately he was unable to do even that, and the ball somehow slipped out of his hands, ending up going a few feet to his right instead of forward in any direction.

In a word: disaster.

It always feels like an over-exaggeration to point to one clip and say it sums up a team's entire season. The MLB schedule is far too long for that to be accurate. And yet… this does seem to sum up the Yankees' season. Or at least the last two months of it.

The Yankees would go on to lose, 7-1, and have dropped seven of the last 10 games. Safe to say there have been happier times in the Bronx.

Shubman Gill on Gambhir-Fortis argument: Coach has every right to look at the pitch

India captain says the team had not been prevented from looking closely at the pitches at any other venue in this series

Gill: Levelling series with a young squad will be a big achievement

India captain Shubman Gill has said it was “absolutely unnecessary” for Lee Fortis, the Surrey head groundsman, to prevent the visitors from having a look at The Oval pitch from close quarters during their training session on Tuesday.Tempers flared when India head coach Gautam Gambhir got into an argument with Fortis, who was concerned by the heavy footfall as well as the presence of training gear on the main square, and reportedly told the Indians that they should view the pitch standing 2.5 metres away from the strip.Gambhir was seen wagging his finger at Fortis and telling him that he was “just a groundsman”.Related

“What happened yesterday, I thought was just absolutely unnecessary,” Gill, who was not at the venue during the incident, said on the eve of the fifth Test at The Oval. “It’s not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket, we have been there for almost two months. A coach has every right to be able to go close quarters and have a look at the wicket and I didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. I actually don’t know why the curator would not allow us to go have a look at the wicket.”Gill said no curator at the four previous venues in the series – Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s and Old Trafford – had imposed restrictions on viewing the pitch or the square.”As long as I remember, we had never got any instructions. As long as you are wearing rubber spikes or [are] barefoot, you can see the wicket from near,” he said. “We have played four matches already in this series, and nobody stopped us from watching the pitch.”All of us have played so much cricket, we have gone to the pitches so many times, including the coaches and captain, I don’t know what the fuss was about.”0:35

Watch – Gambhir’s heated exchange with Surrey groundsman

With India trailing 2-1 in the series heading into the final Test, Gill was asked whether the pressure of a must-win game could have provoked Gambhir’s reaction.”Not really,” Gill said. “If a pitch curator is going to come and ask us to not look at the wicket and look at the wicket from three metres behind, that’s not something that has happened to us before. We’ve been [playing] cricket for such a long time […] That’s the job of the coach and the captain.”Despite there being several heated moments between the teams since the third Test at Lord’s, Gill said relations between England and India remained strong. He said he had “no regrets” at the way he and his team had behaved during the incidents.”The relation is fantastic, but when you are on the field, you are trying to win a game at the end of the day, and both the teams have been very competitive and sometimes when you are competitive in the heat of the moment, you do or say things that you might not do [otherwise],” he said. “But once the match is over, there is mutual respect between both teams.”

Blue Jays' Davis Schneider, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Hit Back-to-Back Homers to Start Game 5

Well, the Blue Jays got off to a fiery start with back-to-back home runs on Wednesday night in Game 5 of the World Series vs. the Dodgers.

The pregame music had barely stopped before Blake Snell threw his first pitch of the game to Davis Schneider, who was in the leadoff spot for the first time this series with George Springer out for the second consecutive game. Schneider hit Snell's 96-mph fastball for a 373-foot home run to start off the game. There were still plenty of empty seats in Dodger Stadium as fans had just started trickling in for the matchup.

Then, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked up to the plate. It took him just two pitches to then hit a home run off of another 96-mph fastball thrown by Snell, this time a 394-foot homer to the outfield to hand Toronto a quick 2–0 lead.

This is the first time in World Series history that a game has begun with back-to-back home runs, per Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. What an incredible way to start off Game 5. We'll see if the Blue Jays can keep this momentum going before they head back to Toronto on Friday.
