A Rajasthan Royals campaign built on the Shane Warne way of playing cricket

From the way their spinners have outwitted opposition batters to the way they’ve backed their youngsters, this campaign has had the late great Australian’s DNA all over it

Karthik Krishnaswamy28-May-2022The shadow of Shane Warne, their captain, coach and talisman during their remarkable title run in the inaugural season of the IPL, has loomed over Rajasthan Royals’ campaign of 2022, and it almost feels like fate that they’ve reached the final for the first time since the heady days of 2008.After scoring his fourth hundred of the season to steer Royals into the final, Jos Buttler was inevitably asked about Warne. “He is such an influential figure for the Rajasthan Royals and having led the team to success in that first season, we will miss him dearly, but we know he is looking down on us with a lot of pride today,” Buttler said at the presentation ceremony. “He made us believe.”The 2022 Royals have an identity of their own, of course, forged by their coach Kumar Sangakkara, their captain Sanju Samson, and a core group of immense skill and experience that includes Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Trent Boult. But if you look for it, you’ll find bits of Warne that remain in the team’s DNA.3:02

Manjrekar: Chahal and Hasaranga are courageous spinners with a big heart

Chahal bowls the pressure overs
Where most wristspinners in the IPL fire the ball into the pitch, attack the stumps relentlessly, and bowl the wrong’un almost as often as their stock ball, Chahal shows immense faith in his legbreak, and is unafraid to give the ball a bit of air and challenge batters to go after him. He’ll never be as good as Warne – who ever will? – but his style of bowling isn’t all that different. And like Warne, he puts his hand up and bowls the difficult overs. Australia’s captains loved using Warne in the high-pressure overs during his ODI career. Think of the Mohali World Cup semi-final of 1996, when Mark Taylor kept four overs of Warne in reserve until the 45th over, which began with West Indies needing 30 off 36 balls, with six wickets in hand. What happened next was three wickets in three overs of Warne magic, West Indian panic and an Australia win for the ages.Warne had retired from international cricket by the time the IPL happened, and his bowling was at a level below what it was at his peak, but that didn’t stop him from bowling the challenging overs. During IPL 2008, he was one of only three spinners – Muthiah Muralidaran and Pragyan Ojha were the others – to bowl 30 or more balls in the slog overs (17-20).At Royals this season, the team management has given Chahal a role very few spinners have ever performed in the IPL. He’s bowled 78 balls in the death overs already – Wanindu Hasaranga and Rashid Khan are a distant joint-second among spinners at 36 balls each – and only Sunil Narine has ever bettered that total in the IPL, doing so in three successive seasons from 2012 to 2014.2:28

Ashwin: ‘I’m extremely confident I can clear the ropes when required’

Ashwin tees off (not recklessly)
Warne sparked widespread merriment on Twitter when he prescribed a radical formula for England to counter India’s unstoppable spinners during the second innings of the pink-ball Ahmedabad Test of 2021. It involved, among other things, promoting Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad to bat in the top three, with the mandate to “tee off (not recklessly) but aggressive.”Warne, as he made clear a million times as a TV commentator, loved pinch-hitters, and he had often been used as one in white-ball cricket, most memorably during – once again – the 1996 World Cup, when he went in at No. 4 and clattered 24 off 14 balls to ease Australia’s progress in a chase of 287 in their quarter-final against New Zealand in Chennai. There’s a bit of Warne in Ashwin’s bowling – the drift, the variations, the intricate plotting of wickets, and above all the competitive edge he brings to contests – and this season, Royals have also looked to maximise Ashwin’s batting ability by pushing him up the order to make up for their lack of depth. They’ve used him in a variety of roles – as a pinch-blocker after a top-order collapse, as a pinch-hitter at No. 3, and even as a genuine finisher – and he’s responded with his best IPL season by far with the bat: 185 runs at an average of 30.83 and a strike rate of 146.82.Along the way, Ashwin also made history by becoming the first batter to retire out in the IPL. We don’t know what Warne would have made of the move, but we suspect he might have approved.Riyan Parag made a crucial half-century against RCB earlier in the season•BCCIRockstar 2.0
In 2008, Ravindra Jadeja was a 19-year-old with immense all-round potential, and Warne recognised that he could become a serious player one day, picking him in 14 out of Royals’ 16 games. Jadeja barely bowled back then, sending down just 2.1 overs through the entire season, but contributed a couple of cameos down the order – Warne called him a “future superstar” after he hit 33 off 19 against Kolkata Knight Riders – and caught everyone’s eye with his electric fielding. In 2021, Riyan Parag, a 19-year-old batting allrounder with immense potential, went through a horror season: 93 runs in 83 balls spread over 10 innings. Royals saw something in him, though, and re-signed him at the 2022 auction. They recognised that he performs a difficult role in the slog overs, and while his overall returns this season – 168 runs at an average of 16.80 and a strike rate of 143.58 – aren’t hugely impressive on the surface, they reflect the role he’s played, usually walking in with next to no time remaining in the innings. On one of the few occasions when he got to spend time in the middle, he scored a priceless, unbeaten 31-ball 56 on a tricky pitch against Royal Challengers Bangalore. And, like the Jadeja of 2008, Parag has been a standout fielder, making countless boundary saves in the hot zones at long-on and long-off, and taking more catches (16) than any other fielder in the competition. He’s celebrated each of them in a cheeky manner that’s rubbed traditionalists the wrong way, but you can bet that Warne would have loved his chutzpah.

Former MLB Star Suffers Serious Injury in Savannah Bananas Game

Sean Casey will never forget his first, and probably last, appearance with the Savannah Bananas as the Cincinnati Reds legend suffered a brutally painful injury after drawing a walk in an exhibition game.

The Savannah Bananas have become a huge hit in recent years, with their wild games selling out MLB and NFL stadiums all over the country.

On Saturday they were in Cincinnati, which is why Casey, who is 50, was invited out to have some fun in front of a sellout crowd at Great American Ball Park.

Well, after the three-time MLB All-Star drew a walk he thought about taking second base but then tore his hamstring while rounding first base.

Here's that sequence:

Apparently the injury was so bad that the hamstring ripped off the bone and he will soon be having surgery.

"I thought he was just playing to the crowd. You know like, ‘Hey, I’m an older guy and it’s hard for me to run.’ Turns out he completely tore his hamstring," Reds announcer Jim Day told Cincinnati.com. "He completely tore the hamstring off the bone. He’s got surgery this week. Took one for the team. … We wish Sean Casey the best. That’s a tough one right there."

Ouch.

Here's hoping Casey has a speedy recovery.

'At first look, I thought it was out' – Knight on the catching reprieve

Third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan’s decision to reprieve Heather Knight against Bangladesh came under the scanner after England escaped to a four-wicket win in their women’s World Cup 2025 match in Guwahati. In the 15th over of England’s chase of 179, Knight chipped legspinner Fahima Khatun to the covers, where Shorna Akter dived to her right and seemed to have taken a low catch. Knight started walking, but the on-field umpires referred it to the TV umpire, who felt that the fielder did not have her fingers under the ball and ruled it not out. Knight was on 13 at that point. She went on to finish unbeaten on 79 off 111 balls, taking her side home with 23 balls to spare.”At first look, I thought it was out,” Knight said after the match. “I thought it carried and thought it was a fair catch and walked off. But the TV umpire decided otherwise. I certainly had a bit of luck today. But probably with the year I have had, I deserved a little bit of luck. I tried to ride it and really make it count.”Related

The tricky bit about these non-dismissals was that the TV umpire gave her ruling while saying the replays available to her were “inconclusive”. In the first instance, of the caught behind, an on-field decision of out was overturned on “inconclusive” evidence, which might have gone against Bangladesh. In case of the “catch” in the covers, too, replays seemed to suggest that the fielder had her fingers under the ball, but the on-field umpires hadn’t really given the batter out to start with. But so convinced was Knight of the legality of the catch that she had reached the boundary line before walking all the way back.Fahima, who finished with 3 for 16 from her ten overs, certainly felt the catch-that-wasn’t affected the final result.”It was a disappointing decision for us,” she said. “Every player in our team felt it was a clear dismissal. The decision was overturned after being given out, which was disappointing. We all know how crucial that wicket was. Had the call gone our way, there was every chance the outcome of the match could have been different.”This was one of the three reprieves for Knight, who was batting for the first time in international cricket since her return from a hamstring injury. She was ruled out caught behind on the first ball she faced. But a review saved her, after replays showed that Marufa Akter’s inswinging delivery had missed her inside edge and brushed the front pad instead. The impact, as it turned out to be, was well outside the line of off too. Then, in the seventh over, she was given lbw but used the DRS successfully once again. Ball-tracking showed that this time, the ball would have bounced over the stumps.”It was the first time I was out three times in an innings and had them overturned, that’s for sure,” Knight said. “It was a case of refocusing. I knew I didn’t hit the ball, and it was tricky conditions as well. It was swinging quite a lot, [which] can make it tricky for the umpires as well. But that’s the joy of DRS, isn’t it? It’s great to have that in place.”

Man City eye South American star who may follow in Julian Alvarez's footsteps

Manchester City are set to mount another Premier League title challenge and could now be primed to raid South America to sign a promising starlet.

Man City mark Premier League return with win over Everton

The international break is always a time to reset for players and managers alike, and Manchester City seem to have lived up to that mantra after claiming an impressive victory over Everton on Saturday.

Erling Haaland’s goalscoring exploits and Tijjani Reijnders’ industry in midfield proved to be crucial on a day where Pep Guardiola was able to celebrate, albeit, the Catalan boss made it clear that he expects more from his attacking support players to ensure there isn’t an over-reliance on the Norwegian.

He stated: “(I’m) disappointed he did not score four or five. All jokes aside, really pleased but we can not rely on just him, we need other players. Wingers, attacking midfielders. They have to make a step up and score goals. We play to provide Erling with quality and passing but other players have to step up.

“The chances were clear and they have to score. At this level they have to demand themselves. Chances from Savinho and Jeremy and Tijjani – they have to score. They have to do it otherwise we can’t do what we want to do.”

Either way, Manchester City find themselves only three points off league leaders Arsenal after ironing out some of their earlier issues in the campaign, representing a stark contrast to their shaky form at this stage last season.

Notoriously, the Citizens’ plethora of attacking talent has offered them a platform to compete across several fronts, and they may now be about to repeat the trick amid developments involving a potential target.

Man City eye move for River Plate youngster Ian Subiabre

According to TBR Football, Manchester City are among a host of clubs keen on River Plate youngster Ian Subiabre, who has been in fine form for Argentina at the Under-20 World Cup with two goals in six appearances.

In a prospective transfer, which could see the youngster embark on a path similar to that of Julian Alvarez, he has registered a goal and an assist in 15 appearances for the South American giants in 2025.

Capable of featuring on either flank, Subiabre is on the radar of Premier League clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, Brighton and Hove Albion, Fulham, and Crystal Palace.

Intriguingly, Manchester City made contact with the 18-year-old around the time they brought in Claudio Echeverri, and they remain keen on doing a deal as his stock continues to rise in Europe.

Now, it remains to be seen if they can beat competitors to his signature, with Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Monaco and RB Leipzig offering further options for Subiabre to further his career. Addressing his situation, Graeme Bailey has made it clear that a 2026 move could appeal to all parties, though didn’t give much away on his potential destination.

He said: “Speaking to scouts and clubs, the belief is now that we see Subiabre move in 2026. It is likely in the summer, but don’t be surprised if someone gets a deal done in January.”

Chelsea brought in a host of attacking stars in that time, sealing deals for the likes of Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and Facundo Buonanotte.

However, despite making attempts to sign a new goalkeeper and star centre-back, Maresca’s side came up short in that regard.

Chelsea held talks to sign AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan, who wanted to join the west Londoners, but couldn’t agree on a price. Meanwhile, defender Dean Huijsen was also subject to an offer from Chelsea, according to reliable media sources, only for Real Madrid to eventually win the race for Bournemouth’s once-coveted starlet.

With Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah unavailable for their vital Premier League clash against Liverpool this weekend, BlueCo’s failure to sign a centre-half in particular is now coming back to haunt them.

Jorrel Hato can play at the heart of defence when required, but is primarily viewed as a left-back to cover Marc Cucurella.

That being said, due to their major shortage of options, Maresca will have little choice but to play the Dutchman alongside Benoit Badiashile against Arne Slot’s side on Saturday.

Chelsea want to address the centre-back problem in January, and it is believed that they’ve reached out for talks with Marc Guehi’s camp this week as they attempt to gauge the feasibility of a cut-price winter deal (Simon Phillips).

Guehi would be the perfect option with his contract expiring at the end of the season, potentially meaning he’s available for a very attainable fee next window, but it remains to be seen whether Oliver Glasner would sanction his exit midway through the campaign with Palace flying high right now.

Chelsea are also ready to go back in for Maignan and sign the Frenchman on a pre-contract in January (Graeme Bailey), so it appears Maresca’s side are very aware of their defensive frailties as they make transfer plans for early 2026.

That isn’t to say they haven’t still got their eyes on further attacking upgrades, though, with Juventus star Kenan Yildiz believed to be attracting real attention from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea "very" interested in signing Kenan Yildiz

The Turkey international was Juve’s star player last season, bagging 12 goals and nine assists in all competitions, and the Old Lady are well aware of growing interest from England.

Juventus'KenanYildiz

Yildiz has continued that fine form in a second striker role under Igor Tudor this term, with two goals and four assists in seven games already.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel in Italian, says that Chelsea are “very” interested in signing Yildiz, but Juve are planning to negotiate fresh terms and keep him out of Premier League’s clutches.

The 20-year-old fits Chelsea’s recruitment strategy down to the ground as one of Serie A’s rising stars, and they will undoubtedly continue to keep tabs on his exploits.

That being said, Maresca’s far more pressing issue is the gaping holes in his defence, so that should absolutely take priority over a move for Yildiz right now.

Bigger bargain than Burn: Newcastle star is cementing himself as a "legend"

St James’ Park will soon be packed to the rafters as Newcastle United return to Champions League action.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies competed in Europe’s main competition during the 2023/24 season, and – for the most part – didn’t disgrace themselves on the big stage, despite facing off against AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris St. Germain.

On home turf, the Toon even amazingly downed the French giants 4-1, with the likes of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, and many more first-teamers who are still in Howe’s plans to this day lining up for that famous tie.

Bruno Guimaraes also found himself in the middle of the park for Newcastle on that unforgettable night, with Dan Burn shining in the backline, with a hope now that the duo, and others, can star again when Barcelona come to town tomorrow night.

The stars when Newcastle thumped PSG

With Alexander Isak no longer in Howe’s camp, Newcastle need a leader more now than ever, with Guimaraes often leading from the front as a shining example.

After all, away from scoring against Liverpool this season while donning the captain’s armband, the “passionate” South American – as he has been labelled previously by Howe – has also managed to average a sensational 7.5 ball recoveries per league clash, on top of winning 5.5 duels on average, as per Sofascore.

Therefore, with the pressure ramped up tomorrow against Hansi Flick’s visitors, Howe will hope he can rely on his dependable number 39 to shine again as both a skilful but fiery presence centrally.

When casting minds back to that famous night against PSG, Guimaraes was definitely a well-rounded performer with an assist picked up, alongside winning five aerial duels to keep the French titans at bay.

That assist allowed for hometown hero Burn to steal the limelight, with his vital header gifting the Toon a much-needed two-goal cushion.

While Burn will no doubt get the nod to start again versus Barca, he might not be the only valiant defender Howe relies on under the St James’ Park floodlights.

One of his defensive teammates now aims to be as defensively stern as the lofty 33-year-old to guide his side to another momentous scalp.

The "unsung hero" who could be this season's Burn

The Magpies will fancy their chances ahead of this one-off clash with Flick and Co., despite a slow start back in domestic action.

Heading into their showdown with PSG two years back, Newcastle had just about edged past Burnley 2-0 in the bread and butter of the league, with the Toon now diving headfirst back into the Champions League this time around after a similarly cagey 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While some of the attacking play saw chances be wasted, the defensive showing against the Old Gold will have pleased Howe, with Fabian Schar continuing his rock-solid start to the season by collecting a clean sheet against Vitor Pereira’s men.

Away from just this slim win, the Toon’s “unsung hero” – as he was once labelled by journalist Jordan Cronin – has also helped his side pick up another two shutouts in the league so far by bettering Guimaraes’ duels won count at 5.8 duels won per game, with the Swiss enforcer now tasked with the tough job of trying to nullify Robert Lewandowski.

He might well be able to rise to this hard occasion when assessing his previous numbers in the Champions League with both Newcastle and his former employers in FC Basel, with Schar – who was signed in the Mike Ashley era for just £3m – picking up an impressive goal and two assists from his 19 encounters in the hotly contested competition.

One of those efforts even came about during the Magpies’ win over PSG as his stunning long-range effort beat Gianluigi Donnarumma, and with memorable clean sheets also coming his way in the tournament versus Liverpool and Chelsea, he could be the main star for Howe’s men as they try to topple Barca.

Dubbed a “true legend of the club” by one Newcastle content creator earlier this year, it could be that Schar is remembered as the poster boy for another unbelievable night in Europe, in the same way Burn is fondly looked back on to this day for his out-of-the-ordinary showing against PSG.

Burn, signed for just £13m from Brighton, remains such an astute capture for the PIF regime, although it’s hard to look past the £3m spent on Schar as even bigger Magpies bargain.

ATUAÇÕES: Luciano marca e garante vitória do São Paulo no Morumbi
