Spin-heavy Bangladesh eye first win against New Zealand in ODIs

Spinners have thrived in Guwahati, taking 33 of the 44 wickets that have fallen at the venue so far in this World Cup

Amelia Kerr: NZ wary of spin-heavy Bangladesh

Big Picture: NZ under the pumpTwo matches in, New Zealand are already at risk of playing catch-up in the Women’s World Cup. Two brilliant innings from captain Sophie Devine haven’t been able to save them as they lost to Australia and South Africa. That makes them one of two winless teams in this tournament.New Zealand hadn’t played an ODI in six months prior to the World Cup. The rust has shown: before losing to Australia and South Africa, they suffered defeats in their warm-up games against India and India A. Apart from Devine, who has contributed 42% of New Zealand’s runs in the tournament so far, the batters have struggled for fluency and the bowling has lacked bite. Against South Africa, they also let themselves down in the field with seven misfields, a reflection of a team that has looked undercooked.Bangladesh, in contrast, are on the rise. They stunned Pakistan, pushed England hard, and are brimming with belief. Their batting hasn’t quite clicked, but their bowlers have done the job with Marufa Akter consistently striking with the new ball and the spinners keeping a tight leash through the middle overs. With Brooke Halliday the only left-hander in the batting order, New Zealand’s right-hand-heavy line-up could be tested by left-arm spinner Nahida Akter and the legspin duo of Fahima Khatun and Rabeya Khan. They’ve never beaten New Zealand in ODIs, having lost both their completed games by a big margin in 2022. But with spin expected to play a big role in Guwahati on Friday, Bangladesh will be keen to use the conditions to their advantage. Unlike New Zealand, they have already played a game at this venue in the World Cup.Form Guide

In the spotlight: Fahima Khatun and Suzie BatesFahima Khatun was near unplayable against England on Tuesday, returning remarkable figures of 3 for 16. She dismissed Nat Sciver-Brunt, Emma Lamb, and Sophia Dunkley, and celebrated each wicket with her trademark jig. Fahima’s slow, loopy legspin tied England down; she conceded just one boundary in 60 balls. She also had Heather Knight caught at cover, but the low catch was ruled not out by the TV umpire, a pivotal moment that arguably swung the game.New Zealand have missed the runs from Suzie Bates from the top of the order, who will be coming into this match off two consecutive ducks. She struggled to score off her first eight balls against Australia, eventually falling to left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux, while she fell for a golden duck against South Africa to Marizanne Kapp. She will need to find a way to see off a red-hot Marufa, who’s coming off four wickets in two games.Team news: Is Mair fit and ready?Bangladesh are unlikely to change their combination unless there’s a last-minute injury or illness. Marufa, who bowled only five overs against England and was off the field with cramps, is “fit and ready” for Friday’s game, Nahida said at the press conference.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Rubya Haider, 2 Sharmin Akhter, 3 Nigar Sultana (capt & wk), 4 Sobhana Mostary, 5 Mst Ritu Moni, 6 Shorna Akter, 7 Fahima Khatun, 8 Nahida Akter, 9 Rabeya Khan, 10 Marufa Akter, 11 Sanjida Akter MeghlaNew Zealand assistant coach Craig McMillan had said that right-arm quick Rosemary Mair was “close to fitness” before their previous fixture against South Africa. If she’s fit, New Zealand may bring her in for Jess Kerr.New Zealand (probable): 1 Suzie Bates, 2 Georgia Plimmer, 3 Amelia Kerr, 4 Sophie Devine (capt), 5 Brooke Halliday, 6 Maddy Green, 7 Isabella Gaze (wk), 8 Jess Kerr/Rosemary Mair, 9 Lea Tahuhu, 10 Eden Carson, 11 Bree IllingPitch and conditions: Spin to winSpinners have taken 75% of the wickets (33 out of 44 total wickets) in the three matches in Guwahati so far this World Cup. There is a possibility of a rain-interrupted start.Stats and Trivia: Tahuhu gears up for 100th ODINew Zealand fast bowler Lea Tahuhu will be playing her 100th ODI on Friday.Marufa Akter has eight wickets in the powerplay this year, the second most by a bowler in women’s ODIs. Brooke Halliday is 57 runs away from 1000 ODI runs. She will become the 18th New Zealand batter to the feat.Quotes”There has been quite a bit of turn and bounce in the nets, which is exciting for my bowling. But on the other hand with batting, it’s just being really disciplined in the best way to play spin. We know with Bangladesh, they’ve, I think apart from the opening bowler, they’re a spin-heavy attack and they’ve had a lot of teams in trouble as well throughout this tournament we’ve seen. So, I think being really disciplined with the bat, you have to sum up conditions really quickly and then work out what your best game plan is.”

Bigger star than Ordonez: Chelsea already have a "future Ballon d'Or winner"

They have received plenty of criticism for it over the years, but Chelsea’s transfer strategy of investing heavily in young players has yielded some real stars in recent years.

The most obvious example is Cole Palmer, who was just 21 when he moved to Stamford Bridge and now has a tally of 73 goal involvements in 101 games for the club.

Even younger than the Englishman is Estevao, who, in just a couple of months, has already amassed a haul of five goal involvements for the club.

The conveyor belt of talent looks set to continue with Chelsea striking a pre-contract agreement with Ecuadorian wonderkid Deinner Ordonez, although he could be upstaged by another incredible prospect set to join up with Enzo Maresca and Co in the summer.

Who is Deinner Ordonez?

On Friday evening, seemingly out of nowhere, transfers expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Chelsea had reached an agreement to sign Ordonez, beating out three other top sides in the process.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, due to rules surrounding foreign players under the age of 18, the Ecuadorean gem won’t actually be joining the Blues until January 2028.

So why did the club go all out for someone so young?

Well, despite not even making his senior debut for Independiente del Valle, the promising defender has made quite the splash in the South American side’s youth system.

For example, he was promoted to the u17s when he was just 14 years old, and then at 15, after impressing for the u15s and u17s, he was promoted to Ecuador’s u20s.

He became the youngest player to represent the side at the South American U-20 Championship earlier this year and has now made four appearances for the team.

Como scout Felix Johnstone has described the youngster as “an absolute alien of a talent” who is “so good in the air” and someone who will “be one of the best CBs in the world.”

Likewise, analyst Ben Mattinson has described him as a “huge potential CB with physicality and athleticism way beyond his age.”

In all, while it is early, it certainly looks like Chelsea have a future superstar on their hand with Ordonez, although they also have another gem who’ll join up in the summer, someone who is an even bigger talent.

Chelsea's bigger star than Ordonez

The good news for Chelsea is that they have more than a few young talents on their way to Stamford Bridge in the summer, but the most exciting of all has to be Dastan Satpaev.

The Blues signed the incredibly exciting prospect from the Kazakhstani side Kairat Almaty in February of this year for a fee of around €4m, which is about £3.5m.

Yet, as he’s still just 17 years old, he is not allowed to join up with the club until next season, but spending an extra year in his homeland might’ve been the best thing for him anyway.

After all, he has played far more senior football than he ever would’ve in England, but he’s not just making up the numbers for his side; he’s one of their leading figures.

For example, the dynamic game-changing forward made 29 first-team appearances last season, totalling 2081 minutes, in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists.

That works out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.31 games, or every 94.59 minutes, which is a truly sensational rate of return for anyone, let alone a 17-year-old and helps lend credence to one analyst who has described him as “a future Ballon d’Or winner.”

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, he has also made 11 appearances in the Champions League this season, seven of which were in the qualifying rounds and the other four in the competition proper.

He also played the full 90 away to Inter Milan, and while he came out on the wrong side of a 2-1 defeat, he didn’t look out of place against last season’s finalists.

Ultimately, it’s notoriously difficult to predict the future of young players, but Chelsea look like they have a handful of hugely promising ones, with Satpaev being the most exciting of all.

India cruise past 400 on second morning, Gill crosses 150

Gill was involved in a 203-run stand with Jadeja before Tongue gave England the breakthrough

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-20251:52

Aaron: A statement knock from Gill

Lunch India cruised past 400 on the second morning at Edgbaston, as Shubman Gill registered his new Test high score in a 203-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket. Jadeja fell shortly before the interval for 89, gloving a catch behind down the leg side off Josh Tongue, but Gill batted serenely to pass 150 for the first time in Tests.Gill and Jadeja added an unbroken 99 on the first evening, and reached their 100-run stand off the first ball of the day as Gill tucked Ben Stokes through the leg side. Gill played a rare false shot early on, edging Chris Woakes past second slip, but otherwise offered almost nothing while batting at a slightly higher tempo than he had on the opening day.England’s bowlers were frustrated by Jadeja’s habit of taking a step or two down the pitch before deciding whether or not to attempt a run, with Stokes and Woakes both exchanging words with him. Both Jadeja and Stokes were spoken to by the umpires – Sharfuddoula and Chris Gaffaney – and encouraged to avoid the ‘danger area’ on a good length.Jadeja marked his ninth 50-plus score against England with his trade sword celebration, and scored freely on both sides of the wicket. He and Gill exchanged sixes off Shoaib Bashir to take India past 400 – and take their partnership beyond 200 – before Tongue, unused for the first 85 minutes of the day, struck in his third over of the session.Tongue found some extra bounce with an 85mph/137kph short ball, which looped through to Jamie Smith via Jadeja’s glove, and bowled a hostile spell to Washington Sundar, India’s No. 8. But India were well on top by the lunch break, with Gill still unbeaten and batting with a combination of class and composure.

Painting Corners: Best MLB Prop Bets Today (Fade Corbin Burnes, Brady Singer in Sunday's Action)

There are plenty of ways to bet on the Major League Baseball action on Sunday, but two of my favorite plays happen to be in the prop market on two starting pitchers.

Usually, I like to back some of the best pitchers in the league in the prop market, but this Sunday I’m actually fading two pitchers in different props.

With Zack Wheeler and Corbin Burnes taking the mound in Baltimore, I have questions about one of their strikeout props, and there’s also a starter in the Kansas City Royals-Los Angeles Dodgers game that could be in a rough spot.

Here’s a breakdown of the two props I’m betting on Sunday.

Best MLB Prop Bets for Sunday, June 16

  • Corbin Burnes UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts (-135)
  • Brady Singer OVER 5.5 Hits Allowed (-160)

Corbin Burnes UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts (-135)

Baltimore ace Corbin Burnes has been great in 2024 – posting a 2.08 ERA in 14 starts, but the strikeout numbers haven't really been there compared to previous years.

Burnes has fallen under 6.5 punchouts – his line on Sunday – in 12 of his 14 starts this season, only clearing this prop one time since striking out 11 hitters on Opening Day.

The Phillies average 8.24 strikeouts per game this season, but I’m not sold on Burnes cruising past this number. He ranks in just the 62nd percentile in strikeout percentage this season, and he has just 16 strikeouts over his last three starts (five, five and six) despite throwing seven innings in each of them.

This number is simply too high to back since Burnes is 2-for-14 on it this season.

Brady Singer OVER 5.5 Hits Allowed (-160)

Kansas City Royals starter Brady Singer is in for a tough matchup against the No. 1 team in OPS on Sunday.

The Dodgers rank third in Major League Baseball in hits this season, and Singer has gotten off to an awful start in June, allowing 16 hits across two starts.

Over his last five outings, he’s allowed nine, six, four, nine and seven hits in those games, pushing his season-long WHIP to 1.22.

Singer is going to have a tough time with this Dodgers lineup, especially since he was tagged by another elite offense – the New York Yankees – for seven hits and seven runs in his last game.

Take the OVER on this prop, even though you have to lay some juice.

Ishan Kishan's 94* takes turbo-charged SRH to 231

Abhishek, Klaasen, Aniket all played high-impact innings

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-20254:12

What went wrong for Ishan Kishan at SRH?

After the hundred in the first match, Ishan Kishan had scored just 125 runs at a strike-rate of 106.83 in 10 innings coming into the match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In Lucknow, though, he played a highly-efficient anchor role with 94 off 48 to make sure the high-intent Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) line-up didn’t run out of batters in the end. It took SRH to 231, the 42nd score of 200 or more in IPL 2025, the highest number of such scores in a season. The target of 232 was also more than any they have chased down successfully.Outside Kishan, though, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and Aniket Verma all put the RCB bowling under extreme pressure. They expected the pitch to be tricky, but in an over they decided it was a belter and that they needed 230 to 240. Abhishek started the charge with 34 off 17, Head was more sedate with 17 off 10, Klaasen almost effortless in his 24 off 13 and Aniket actually hit good balls for sixes in 26 off 9.When RCB finally got rid of all four of them, they could get in four quiet overs: only 30 came from overs 13 to 16. Romario Shepherd, who turned RCB’s last game around in the final few overs around with the bat, threatened to do so with the ball here. Having been introduced only in the 15th over, he took the wickets of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Abhinav Manohar in two overs for just 14.This is when Kishan’s innings was crucial. He scored 54 out of the 86 that came since the wicket of Aniket at 145 for 4 in the 12th over. He did so without taking the high risks that his partners had been taking. Kishan and Pat Cummins added an unbeaten 43 in the last three overs.

Hardik Pandya joint-second on IPL 2025 Purple Cap table after MI vs SRH

Purple Cap leaderboard

Noor Ahmad is still at No. 1 with 12 wickets from seven games, but just one slot below him, with 11 wickets from six games, is MI captain Hardik Pandya. Hardik took 1 for 42 from his four overs on Thursday night, which made him the joint-second on the bowling chart.Three others are also on 11 wickets: Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Kuldeep Yadav, Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) Khaleel Ahmed and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) Shardul Thakur.

Orange Cap leaderboard

There was no change at the top of the Orange Cap table, with Nicholas Pooran (LSG), B Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans – GT) and Mitchell Marsh (LSG) hogging the top three spots. But Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 26 off 15 balls for MI, has climbed to the fourth place. He now has 265 runs from seven innings at an average of 44.16 and a strike rate of 151.42.Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) Shreyas Iyer occupies the fifth position with 250 runs from six innings at an average of 62.50 and a strike rate of 204.91. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Virat Kohli is at sixth with 248, also from six innings. 'Not even half as good as Jude' – Jobe Bellingham is the 'only problem' at Borussia Dortmund as ex-Bayern Munich star warns Englishman's situation 'isn't getting better'

Dietmar Hamann has labelled Jobe Bellingham as Borussia Dortmund's "only cause for concern" amid the club's strong start to the season. The German legend's criticism comes as the 20-year-old struggles for form, with manager Niko Kovac defending the 'nervous' star amid reports of off-field pressure from his family.

Bellingham off to rough start at Borussia Dortmund

Hamann has labelled Jobe as the "only problem child" at Dortmund, despite the club's impressive start to the season. Writing in his column for , Hamann praised the overall progress made under coach Kovac but singled out the young English midfielder for his struggles to make an impact.

So far this season, Bellingham has struggled to solidify a place in Dortmund's starting lineup. He has featured in eight matches across all competitions, accumulating just 281 minutes of action. He has been named in the first XI only three times – twice in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League – while failing to register a goal or an assist.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWhat Hamann said about ex-Sunderland player's struggles

Hamann feels Dortmund themselves have made good progress under the current boss, but feels Bellingham has some trouble ahead.

"The momentum Niko Kovac has brought to the table is truly impressive. Finally, consistency. The whole team is finally working for the win. I don't think they'll be able to keep up with Munich until the end, because Bayern seem to be able to step up a gear when necessary," he wrote.

"But BVB's development is really good. Just imagine if they had even won the games in Turin and at St. Pauli . Then they'd be on Bayern's level. The only cause for concern seems to be Jobe Bellingham. Young, expensive and, so far, not even half as good as Jude Bellingham. It's not getting any easier for him."

Kovac defends 'nervous' Bellingham after latest struggles

Hamann's criticism comes as Bellingham continues to find his feet in the Bundesliga. In Dortmund's recent 4-1 Champions League victory over Athletic Club, the midfielder was handed a rare start but was substituted after 69 minutes following an unconvincing display. Manager Kovac, however, defended his player, saying: "Sure, he made one or two bad passes. But the boy is 20, and there's a lot of nervousness. I was very pleased with his performance."

Off-field pressure mounting on young midfielder

Bellingham's on-field difficulties appear to be compounded by off-field tensions. According to reports, the midfielder is feeling "massively insecure" due to pressure from his family. The situation reportedly escalated in August when his father and advisor, Mark, confronted sporting director Sebastian Kehl and Kovac over a lack of playing time. While the club has downplayed any rift, the episode adds context to the intense scrutiny surrounding the player, who has started just three of Dortmund's eight matches this season.

Head and Sutherland take top Australia awards

Travis Head has been named Australian cricket’s Allan Border Medallist and Annabel Sutherland has won the Belinda Clark Award. It was the first time for each player to win Australian cricket’s highest individual honours. While Head was a favourite for the top men’s prize, also claiming the one-day international player award, Sutherland was third in the one-day voting and a distant sixth for the women’s T20I international award. But she was awarded top votes for the two Tests played by the Australian women in the voting period over the past 12 months, most recently scoring 163 at the MCG as the hosts capped their Ashes whitewash.Related

Sutherland the first woman to score a Test hundred at the MCG. In February last year, she scored 210 in the Test against South Africa at the WACA.The extra weighting for the Test votes proved the difference for Sutherland. It is the first time she has won any of the top women’s categories – the Belinda Clark Award, the ODI or the T20I player.”For me, I love batting, probably my Test record shows that, and I try and make the most of that when I get out in the middle,” Sutherland said.Head, who received his award from head coach Andrew McDonald at the team hotel in Galle, was a clear winner of the Allan Border Medal and is the first South Australian to claim the award. Head polled 208 votes for the Border Medal, well clear of Josh Hazlewood’s 158, with Australian Test captain Pat Cummins third on 147.Head is coming off a bumper 12 months across. The 31-year-old scored a staggering 1427 runs across all three formats in the 12-month polling period that began with Australia’s home Test series against West Indies last January, and ended with the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Smith has the next-most runs with 806, while only Adam Zampa (31) played more games than Head (29) in the voting period.A blistering 140 off 141 balls in his home Test match at the Adelaide Oval against India was an undeniable highlight for Head, and helped reignite Australia’s series after their heavy loss in the first match in Perth.Asked for the highlight of his past 12 months, Head said: “I feel like the Indian series, the Test series that’s just gone. Nice to contribute. It’s such a big five or six weeks.”Sutherland polled 168 to win ahead of Ashleigh Gardner, who won the Belinda Clark Award last year. Gardner polled 143 and Beth Mooney was third on 115, with Gardner and Mooney two-time winners.Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner took out the women’s T20I and ODI awards•Getty Images

While none of the top men’s winners were at the Monday night awards function in Melbourne due mostly to the current tour of Sri Lanka, the women were celebrating in the room after they dominated the Ashes series.Mooney and Zampa were named the top T20I players, while Gardner took out the women’s ODI category and Hazlewood the men’s Test honour.Ellyse Perry and Jess Jonassen were named the players of the WBBL tournament and, likewise, Cooper Connolly and Glenn Maxwell took out the BBL award.Boxing Day Test sensation Sam Konstas was named the Bradman Young Men’s Cricketer of the Year.West Australian Chloe Ainsworth won the Betty Wilson award for the top young women’s cricketer, while Beau Webster and Georgia Voll took the domestic awards.
