Maia Bouchier targets World Cup opener's berth after breakthrough winter

Batter grabbed opportunity after years on England sidelines, with Bangladesh campaign looming

Andrew Miller25-Apr-2024Maia Bouchier says her goal for the 2024 summer is to cement her new-found status at the top of England’s batting order, as the countdown begins for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in September.Bouchier, 25, enjoyed a breakthrough winter on England’s recent tour of New Zealand, where she capitalised on the late arrival of several senior players from the Women’s Premier League in India, including the incumbent opener Danni Wyatt and senior batter Nat Sciver-Brunt, to make a strong case for a permanent role.Having previously batted exclusively in the middle-order in her limited opportunities over the previous two years, Bouchier was first promoted to open during Sri Lanka’s visit last summer, where she complemented Sciver-Brunt’s century in the third ODI in Leicester with a career-best 95 from 65 balls. But given England’s main focus for the year, it was Bouchier’s performance in March, in the 4-1 series win in the T20Is against New Zealand, that truly stood out. She batted at No.3 in the first three matches, making scores of 43 not out, 12 and 71, then a series-sealing 91 from 56 balls after being promoted to open for the fourth match.”I’ve been waiting for that moment,” Bouchier told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s been great, I’ve really enjoyed my cricket and putting in some performances for England. Going into this summer, I’ll do as much as I can to grab every opportunity and keep that spot now.”Bouchier’s form was the culmination of a settled run in the side, one that had been promised to her last summer by England’s head coach, Jon Lewis, when she was picked ahead of the veteran Tammy Beaumont despite the latter’s impressive form in the Hundred. The reason Lewis gave at the time was that Bouchier “had been carried around the world”, but her total of 13 innings in 19 T20Is since her debut in 2021 meant she hadn’t been given a chance to prove her worth.Maia Bouchier made a strong impression on England’s tour of New Zealand•Getty ImagesShe’s done that now, outshining both the returning Beaumont and the struggling Sophia Dunkley in New Zealand, to the extent that she is now ready to stake a claim to be a first-choice opener for the World Cup – a point reiterated last week by her captain Heather Knight, when she praised Bouchier’s form in New Zealand while acknowledging that England “haven’t quite nailed” their opening partnership yet.”It was all about being patient for that moment,” Bouchier said. “[Lewis] talked about giving me a little run-in, to make sure I wasn’t thinking that everything was riding on one opportunity.”I guess I had to do those tough years to get to that point, but playing in those [lower-order] positions meant I had to be able to adapt quickly, so that has only helped me going up to the top of the order. I can’t really regret any of it. I’ll always take that as much as I can.”Related

Bouchier's 91 powers England to series-clinching victory

England’s summer comprises home series against Pakistan in May and New Zealand in June-July ahead of the Hundred, where Bouchier will once again be playing for the defending champions, Southern Brave. And while the swift transition to Bangladesh’s pitches will be a tough one for England, she’s confident that the batting unit has shored up its game against spin – a notable shortcoming last year, both in the Ashes, as well as the shock T20I series loss to Sri Lanka.”Bangladesh is going to be difficult, and spin is always a talking point, but really it comes down to the game situation and the ball in hand at that moment,” Bouchier said. “Everyone has been working on playing to their strengths against spin, whether it’s reverse-sweeping or long sweeps to the other side of the pitch. We’ll just being looking to put the pressure back on the bowlers as much as we can.”Bouchier was speaking at the launch of the MCC Foundation Hubs tournament in Leyton, a competition that involves more than 100 girls’ and boys’ teams playing for the chance to appear in a Lord’s final. The programme has already reached more than 20,000 state school children since its launch in 2012, and recently received a £1million funding boost from MCC and the ECB. With 126 hubs already in existence, the aim is to reach the 150th location by next year.On the girls’ front alone, the scheme has seen a 53% increase in participation over the past year, and in the week that the ECB announced the eight counties to have been granted Tier 1 status for the new national women’s competition from 2025, Bouchier said that trend reflected the huge growth in interest she had witnessed in the course of her own career.”It’s amazing,” she said. “I was playing for Middlesex when I was 16, and there wasn’t an England development pathway or a county set-up. I’m super lucky and super privileged to have been driven all round London by my parents, who funded everything for me. Without that I would have fallen out of the game.”I also I knew a lot of talented but under-privileged players who just didn’t have anywhere to go. This foundation is there for kids and teenagers in that range, who don’t know whether they want to play, but they’re really interested in getting involved. It gives them access and brings the community together as well, which is exactly what you want.”

Ramifications: A surprising victory, by all accounts, but one that the CITY faithful will welcome with open arms. Best signing since Haaland: Pep hit the jackpot on Man City's “elite" star

Manchester City won their first Premier League title in 2011, thanks to Sergio Aguero’s 94th-minute goal, snatching the title away from rivals Manchester United in the final seconds. Since then, the Citizens have won seven more Premier League titles, dominating English football for the past decade.

Along the way, City have invested a lot of money in buying some of the best talent on offer, leading them towards this success, along with the appointment of Pep Guardiola in 2016, which has seen them become the real powerhouse of English football.

Record signing Jack Grealish played a huge part in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign, Kevin De Bruyne has won six Premier League titles with the club, and Rodri has even won the Ballon d’Or for his performances in the 2023/24 season.

But perhaps one of their best signings of all time, doesn’t even land in their top ten most expensive list, as City signed Erling Haaland back in 2022, paying £51m for the Norwegian striker.

Erling Haaland's impact at Man City

The 24-year-old has already made 137 appearances for the club since joining from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 119 goals, providing 18 assists and totalling 11,253 minutes played. To go along with that, Haaland has made 39 appearances for his country, already scoring 38 goals for them.

The 6 foot 4 forward became the quickest player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements, doing so in just 94 games played, with only 16 of these 100 goal involvements being assists.

Haaland also now holds the Premier League scoring record, netting 36 goals in a single season, beating the previous record shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole (34 goals).

The Norway international has already proven to be worth his weight in gold, but City have added some extra quality around him in recent years, one of which could be considered their best signing since Haaland joined the club, and one who could be at Manchester City for a very long time.

Man City's best signing since Haaland

Man City signed Josko Gvardiol from Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig, for a fee of around £77.6m back in 2023. Since joining, the 23-year-old has made 83 appearances for the club, scoring ten goals, providing four assists and totalling 6,912 minutes played.

When comparing the Croatian international’s first season and second season, you can see a gradual improvement across most metrics, improving his progressive qualities, getting himself into more high-value positions (xG and xAG increase) and improving his passing accuracy.

Gvardiol was labelled “one of the best defenders” at the World Cup in 2022, with Jacek Kulig tagging the Croatian as an “elite talent”.

Coming through as a central defender, Gvardiol has now shown his versatility, often playing as a left-back for Guardiola, giving him tactical flexibility due to the defenders’ ability to fill in both in advanced areas and in defensive zones.

Having scored five goals in the Premier League this season, Gvardiol has shown his importance not only as a defender with exceptional recovery pace, but also as an attacking outlet, often finding himself in and around the box, providing the final touches and making the difference in matches.

It is for that raft of attributes that the flying full-back can earn the status of the Etihad side’s best signing since Haaland.

Man City now willing to grant Pep request to go for £190k-p/w Arsenal star

As Manchester City look to rebuild, Pep Guardiola has reportedly personally requested that the Blues make a statement move to hijack one of Arsenal’s best players.

Man City eyeing Dias upgrade

Whilst the international break at least ceased the Citizens’ misery before they impressively earned their way into the FA Cup last four over Bournemouth, it didn’t take long for injury to strike once more. In a season full of absentees, Erling Haaland became the latest to limp off against Bournemouth and it’s bad news for the Norwegian superstar.

Following their latest injury blow, it remains to be seen whether that will be the final nail in the coffin for Manchester City’s Champions League hopes. Even if that does prove to be the case, however, they’re reportedly looking to make a statement this summer.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now willing to grant Guardiola’s request to sign William Saliba from Arsenal this summer in what would be one of the moves of the summer.

Not only would they be signing one of their rivals’ most influential players, but they would also be taking him out of the clutches of Real Madrid, who have been eyeing another free deal upon the Frenchman’s contract expiry in 2027.

Better than Hugo Larsson: Man City make £50m star their top summer target

He could cost Man City upwards of £50m

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 1, 2025

If the Citizens are to solve their defensive problems once and for all then signing Saliba should certainly be among their priorities this summer. Whether they’re in a position to lure the impressive centre-back away from the Gunners is another question, however.

"Superb" Saliba is one of the best

At 24 years old, Saliba is at the peak of his powers and that peak has taken him among the best in the world in his position. The Frenchman carries every trait needed to be a top defender in the modern game and represents a player that Guardiola is almost certain to love just as Mikel Arteta does at Arsenal.

Arsenal's WilliamSalibaapplauds fans after the match

Praising his star as early as his Premier League debut, the Arsenal boss told reporters in 2022: “Saliba was superb. For his age, he is built really well. You need the right balance. Physicality in this league is something where you can’t come up short. If you do, you will be exposed.”

Only getting better ever since, there’s every argument that Saliba would become Manchester City’s best defender if he completed a shock move to the Etihad this summer.

Their own Kvaratskhelia: Slot must now unleash "deadly" Liverpool star

Arne Slot suggested that all eyes will be on Liverpool come Wednesday evening, and he’s probably right.

Liverpool meet Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League. Next week, Anfield awaits the dominant Ligue 1 champions, but first, the Reds must do battle in the French capital.

PSG haven’t lost domestically this term, but they have endured a tough start to Europe’s revamped format, finishing 15th after winning only one of their first five fixtures, defeated by Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Though Liverpool, top of the Premier League, leaders during the Champions League group phase, will be favourites, PSG are dangerous and dynamic, led by the free-scoring Ousmane Dembele.

Ousmane Dembele scores for PSG

They’ve won ten matches in a row and lost in any competition since facing Bayern in November. Luis Enrique oversaw a 10-0 aggregate victory over Brest during the first knockout stage. ‘Expect fireworks’ might be a suitable phrase, but then fireworks can be disappointing.

Instead, prepare for a tough two-legged affair, one that will see both teams enjoy positive moments.

Slot is confident, his team are confident. Here we go.

Liverpool injury news before PSG

Liverpool have enjoyed a far easier ride on the injury front this term than last, but this is not a bout of divine luck, this is down to Slot and his crew’s acumen, their system and recovery programmes.

That said, the Premier League side will enter the Parisian den with a few absences. Namely, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley continue to sit on the sidelines, neither expected to play in either leg. Elsewhere, rarely-used Tyler Morton continues to recover from a shoulder issue.

However, the latest concern is that Cody Gakpo – who missed matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City last month in the Premier League – was absent from training on Tuesday, casting his availability into doubt.

PSG are swatting domestic rivals away like half-hearted flies, but this Slot machine is a different beast. Liverpool have only gone from strength to strength under Slot’s wing, and that’s despite having opted against making significant improvements to the first team.

Liverpool's biggest Champions League wins (timeless)

They haven’t met often, but Liverpool will need to right one unwanted record this evening.

Liverpool's record vs PSG

Liverpool last met PSG in Group C of the Champions League in 2018/19. It was the season, of course, that saw Jurgen Klopp lift his first major honour as Reds boss, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final of Europe’s most-coveted competition.

To get there, the Merseysiders had to battle through a tough group phase comprised of PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade. Liverpool lost each of their away fixtures, scraping through on the final day with a 1-0 win over Naples opposition.

They started on perfect footing, however, with Roberto Firmino scoring a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory over Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Curiously, the respective sides have only met four times in their competitive history, each winning both of their home matches. Before the 2018/19 season, Liverpool faced PSG in the 1996/97 Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals – an obsolete inter-country tournament that hosted domestic cup champions – but were beaten on aggregate. The French side lost to Barcelona in the final.

Liverpool will need to be on their a-game if they are to avoid defeat in Paris for the first time, and Slot is going to need to make some tough decisions in the final third.

How Liverpool should set their frontline

In an alternate universe, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be a part of Slot’s Liverpool frontline as they take on PSG for a place in the quarter-finals. Instead, he’s on the opposite number.

In January, the runaway Ligue 1 leaders added the Georgia international to their ranks after a swift and concerted attack, signing Napoli’s superstar for about £59m after Liverpool had expressed an interest in doing a deal.

Kvarakshelia, a left flanker, is electric of pace and deadly in front of goal, scoring and assisting in PSG’s 7-0 win over Brest in the previous round.

However, Liverpool have devastating options of their own, and with Gakpo potentially sidelined, Slot will be looking to walk down a different track.

Instead, the English side may keep Luis Diaz on the left flank, for the tricky wideman could be the perfect answer to a player of Kvaratskhelia’s ilk.

Liverpool have demonstrated their quicksilver tactical ability in recent weeks, moving through different styles to suit the match-up with the given opponent.

For example, the stunning 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium last month was achieved through Diaz’s pace and potency on the left flank and Dominik Szoboszlai’s unrelenting energy in the middle. Liverpool only saw 34% of the ball against Manchester City, but it mattered not, with Slot’s side in control throughout.

How does this pertain to the forthcoming clash? Well, PSG are going to want the ball: in Ligue 1, the unbeaten table-toppers have averaged 68% possession, a sure marker of their dominance if there ever was one.

However, this translates onto the continental stage.

Almost flawless, group phase-topping Liverpool, not among the best ball retainers. Makes you think, huh?

Liverpool are more than comfortable letting a team ‘dominate’. We saw against Pep Guardiola’s side the masterful display of counter-pressing, pounce, dispossess, break, score.

Diaz will be crucial in enacting this vision. The 28-year-old is not only a “deadly” goalscorer – as reporter Lewis Steele hailed him after a hat-trick against Leverkusen in November – but he’s a crisp and dynamic team player.

Moreover, the Kvaratskhelia is one of the Colombian’s most statistically comparable players, as per FBref, with his dribbling skills and incisiveness maybe even trumping that of his counterpart.

Diaz ranks among the top 7% of positional peers in the Champions League this season for goals scored, the top 13% for pass completion and the top 19% for successful take-ons per 90.

Gakpo is a fantastic goalscorer, and if he’s unavailable, will be missed. However, Diaz’s fleet-footedness and link-up play will be crucial in the Parisian den, and could be the template for victory anyway. It worked a treat against City after all.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

Liverpool’s Netherlands forward has scored in seven successive starting appearances at Anfield, and thus Slot will be sweating over his fitness ahead of next week’s reverse fixture, when PSG, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and the rest meet the stentorian Merseyside support.

For now, Diaz has a job to do, putting Liverpool in a good position for the contest’s midpoint.

QUASE A VIRADA

Blackburn agree deal to sign "explosive" £40,000-a-week Premier League ace

Blackburn Rovers are said to have agreed a deal to sign an “explosive” Premier League attacker, according to a new update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Latest Blackburn news

John Eustace’s side are sitting pretty in a playoff place in the Championship currently, with supporters growing increasingly confident that a return to the Premier League could be on the cards this season.

Last Friday, Rovers battled their way to a 2-1 victory at home to Preston North End, as they added three more precious points to their league tally, and next up is a trip to Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday evening.

Blackburn have continued to be linked with new signings in the last remaining days of the January transfer window, with Augustus Kargbo arriving last month to bolster the attacking options at Eustace’s disposal.

Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has also emerged as a target, having only moved to his current club from West Brom last summer, but it looks as though he will stay put for the time being. Now, it looks like an alternative attacking option could come in at the eleventh hour of the window, with an exciting update emerging on deadline day evening.

Blackburn agree deal to sign "explosive" ace

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Blackburn have agreed a deal to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Emmanuel Dennis on the final day of the window: “Blackburn Rovers agree deal to sign Emmanuel Dennis from Nottingham Forest. Player now on his way for medical tests.”

The £40,000-a-week Dennis could be a great addition for Blackburn, bringing with him proven Premier League quality, having scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in 52 appearances in the competition.

The 27-year-old has also netted four times in 17 outings in the Championship, while Tom Cleverley lauded his abilities during his time working with the striker at Watford: “We know that Dennis has got that explosive burst. As a defender, you can think you’re comfortable on the ball, and then he appears from nowhere.”

At 27 years of age, this is no panic buy from Blackburn, in terms of signing a player who is on the wane and in his 30s, and he could be hungry to prove himself after a lack of minutes in a Forest shirt this season.

The superb form of Chris Wood was understandably going to see his playing time limited, and in fact, he hasn’t made a single appearance, only highlighting why a fresh challenge will surely appeal to him midway through the season.

Match-winners in the final third are the difference-maker in any promotion battle, so Blackburn will be hoping that Dennis can chip in with some telling contributions in the next three months, putting his experience to good use.

He is an eight-cap Nigeria international, scoring once for his country, and if he can hit the heights that Eustace will no doubt expect from him, he could be a fantastic signing.
