Luiz struggles in Villa defeat to Newcastle

Aston Villa lost their third league game in their last six as they were beaten 1-0 by relegation-threatened Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

Kieran Trippier’s 35th-minute free-kick was enough to secure a third consecutive victory for the hosts whilst Villa remain in the bottom half in 11th place.

It was a poor display from the entire Villa team, with Birmingham Live’s Ashley Preece calling the performance “the worst they’ve been under Gerrard”.

However, midfielder Douglas Luiz had a particularly difficult afternoon on Tyneside.

According to SofaScore, the Brazilian was the joint-worst player on the pitch (alongside goalkeeper Emi Martinez), picking up a 6.4/10 rating as he won just a third of his duels. Moreover, the 23-year-old was dribbled past on three occasions whilst failing to complete a dribble of his own, also losing the ball 14 times.

The West Midlands side didn’t create much going forward, but the only shot on target for the visitors came through Luiz, who should have done better with his effort.

From a defensive aspect, the midfielder was certainly below par, failing to record a single clearance or block whilst making just one interception and two tackles.

Luckily for the Brazilian, his poor display won’t amount to any serious consequences, with Steven Gerrard having limited options in midfield bar the currently preferred trio of Luiz, John McGinn and youngster Jacob Ramsey, who also struggled after such a strong display against Leeds on Wednesday night.

Marvelous Nakamba is set to be absent through injury until April, whilst Morgan Sanson and Carney Chukwuemeka have tallied just 18 appearances between them all season.

However, little positivity can be read into the performance of a player who has enjoyed another strong season for Aston Villa this term, making 19 league appearances whilst averaging an 84% passing accuracy, with 1.1 interceptions, 1.9 tackles and 0.7 clearances per game.

Moreover, the 23-year-old was heavily linked with moves to both Arsenal and Tottenham during the January transfer window, with The Athletic reporting that a deadline day bid for the Brazilian was rejected.

Luiz’s quality is certainly recognised by those outside of the West Midlands based on that transfer interest, but the midfielder needs to ensure that he shows it on a consistent basis.

Commentator hails ‘sensational’ Rangers

BT Sport commentator Darrell Currie was left stunned by Rangers’ performance against Borussia Dortmund, describing it as ‘sensational’.

The Lowdown: GVB delight

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men came up against Dortmund on Thursday evening, in what looked an extremely tough Europa League assignment at Signal Iduna Park.

Rangers made light work of their opponents on a memorable night, however, winning 4-2 in Germany and putting themselves in pole position to go through to the last 16, leaving their manager delighted, in awe of his midfield in particular.

It was a result that would have caused shockwaves around Europe, perhaps even suggesting the Gers could be a dark horse in this season’s competition.

The Latest: Currie lauds win

Taking to Twitter after the game, commentator Currie hailed a magnificent triumph for Van Bronckhorst’s side:

“Blimey that was a heck of a start to our double header…Sensational display in Germany.”

The Verdict: Still work to do

The key now is Rangers not resting on their laurels, with lots of work still to do, especially with away goals no longer counting for anything extra in the Europa League this season.

An early strike for Dortmund in the second leg at Ibrox next Thursday would give the tie a very different complexion, especially with Erling Haaland potentially available next time around.

Gers supporters should treasure a great night in Germany, though, and the confidence it will give Van Bronckhorst and his players could be great moving forward, even in domestic competition.

Weather curtails Lord's thriller

Leicestershire’s James Taylor posted his third century in four matches against Middlesex to leave this County Championship clash at Lord’s intriguingly poised

Rain and bad light in the last hour put paid to an enthralling finish at Lord’s where County Championship Division Two rivals Middlesex and Leicestershire were eventually forced to shake hands on an intriguing draw.As the game entered its final hour, three short showers led to a hat-trick of brief interruptions and the loss of 10 overs. When rain arrived again just before 5.30pm, umpires Peter Willey and Nigel Cowley led the players off for a final time with Leicestershire on 139 for 5 – only 54 short of victory.Having mopped up the last six Middlesex wickets inside 45 minutes at the start of the day, Leicestershire set about chasing 193 for their sixth win of the summer. The visitors made the worse of starts when Greg Smith, fresh from a stylish 65 in the first innings, fell for a golden duck second time around after being castled by Tim Murtagh.Soon after lunch Jacques du Toit, driving hard at a delivery from Murtagh, found a thick edge to be spectacularly held overhead and to his right at slip by Dawid Malan to make it 29 for 2.Middlesex nemesis James Taylor, averaging 161 against the north London side, this time went after only six deliveries and without scoring. Moving back and across his stumps, when he might have played forward to a full-length ball from Pedro Collins, Taylor went lbw to give Middlesex their first whiff of victory.Paul Nixon (24) then dug in with fellow left-hander Matthew Boyce to add 55 in 21.3 overs and take the visitors to within 109 of victory. However, on the cusp of the tea break, Nixon pushed forward at the occasional off-spin of Owais Shah to be caught at short leg.Boyce notched a 102-ball half-century at the start of the final session but only two balls later he went back to a quicker ball from Shaun Udal that crept through the defences and pegged back off stump to leave Leicestershire seemingly in trouble at 92 for 5. Tom New cut the deficit further with a bright and breezy 41 not out with six boundaries before rain arrived and frustration ensued. The final day started with Middlesex resuming on their overnight position of 168 for 4 after 62 overs. They soon lost nightwatchman Toby Roland-Jones for 13, sweeping hard at a full-length ball from Claude Henderson. Roland-Jones saw the ball defect off the right arm of Taylor at short leg and fly to Boyce at backward square leg.Former England batsman Shah combined forces with Gareth Berg (21) to see Middlesex past 200 seemingly in comfort, with Shah posting his third half-century of the summer along the way from 111 balls and with two boundaries. But the loss of Shah, caught at slip off the bowling of Jigar Naik, sparked a dramatic home collapse which saw Middlesex lose their last five wickets for 29 runs in the space of 8.5 overs.Left-arm spinner Henderson bagged 3 for 49, off-spinner Naik 2 for 78 and rookie right-arm seamer, Nathan Buck, who extracted good pace and bounce from a fourth-day pitch, claimed 3 for 37 as Middlesex collapsed from 119 without loss to 255 all out.

Liverpool dealt Firmino injury scare

Liverpool have been dealt a last-minute blow with Roberto Firmino a doubt for the title-deciding crunch clash against Manchester City.

What’s the news?

The Brazilian forward was not seen at Liverpool’s training ground on Friday ahead of today’s game which will be a worry for them, but Jurgen Klopp is still hoping he will have a fully fit squad available to him.

In his press conference the same day, the German manager said: “it looks like everyone’s available again”, with the other doubt being Fabinho who suffered a cut following a clash of heads in their Champions League game against Benfica midweek.

Firmino vital to Liverpool

Bobby Firmino as he’s called has been a vital part to Liverpool’s success under Klopp, and although players such as Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz have shown they can fulfil that role, he would be a huge miss ahead of their biggest game of the season.

He has been involved in eight goals in 17 Premier League appearances for the Reds this term and has more combined goals and assists per 90 minutes compared to Jota at 0.82 to 0.73.

It’s not just a push for the title that the club need to maintain, but they are also still in the FA Cup and Champions League. A fit Firmino will be vital to any success Liverpool have this season.

Opponents City also boast an incredibly strong squad going into the fixture with Ruben Dias the only big miss for them.

With Firmino they could perhaps exploit this defensive weakness and he could link up with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané for a ruthless front three.

Another advantage to having Firmino over the other options available is the big game experience that he has. The forward has appeared in two Champions League finals for the Reds and played a key part in their last title-winning campaign.

His experience is extremely valuable and he has been described as “elite” by former Premier League striker Ian Wright.

Just a point separates the two sides and whoever claims victory will be in pole position to lift the famous trophy in May. It promises to be a game to remember, and the potential absence of Firmino could leave City with a huge advantage.
