Tottenham readying Milenkovic talks

According to Corriere di Puglia e Lucania, as relayed by Sport Witness, a major update has dropped as Tottenham Hotspur and Fabio Paratici set out a plan for Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs in summer talks…

As per Sky Sports, Tottenham were interested in the 24-year-old over last summer’s transfer window and even attempted to leapfrog West Ham in the race for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The reliable broadcaster also claimed that talks were held over Milenkovic but to no avail with the Serbia international eventually putting pen to paper on fresh terms with La Viola.

Now, in a fresh update, it appears that Spurs are eyeing a fresh swoop in January.

The Latest: Mikenkovic update emerges…

As per CDPEL, via Sport Witness, Tottenham and Paratici are ‘following the player closely’ ahead of next month and it is even believed that the Lilywhites are now ‘ready to enter in negotiations’.

This comes amid claims that Milenkovic has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Fiorentina if the right offer arrives.

The Verdict: Get it done…

As Antonio Conte becomes linked with bolstering his defensive reinforcements in the winter window, we believe a swoop for Milenkovic would tick a lot of boxes.

The 6 foot 4 powerhouse is adept at passing out from the back and colossal in the air, as evident by the fact he eclipses the rates of every Tottenham player in terms of aerial duels won per 90 (WhoScored).

He’s also found 90.8% of his passes to teammates in Serie A this season, highlighting a cool head on fairly young shoulders and leaving little wonder he has attracted plenty of praise.

Spanish defender Pol Lirola recently called him ‘extraordinary’ while Milenkovic’s former coach Ivan Tomic labelled the defender a ‘beast’. Accolades and numbers like these could point to a really shrewd option for Conte.

In other news: Levy now open to another big name exit as Conte tells Spurs to sell ‘magnificent’ player, find out more here.

Antonio badly lets West Ham down again

West Ham United slipped outside of the top four in the Premier League with a disappointing defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

The Irons have now failed to score in three straight matches as they were well-beaten by the Gunners in a frantic encounter at the Emirates Stadium and indeed, it was another game in which Michail Antonio looked hugely off the pace.

Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring right after the break before Hammers defender Vladimir Coufal received his marching orders after conceding a penalty, in which Alexandre Lacazette missed from the spot. But Emile Smith Rowe wrapped things up with a strike just three minutes from time.

After drawing a blank against Burnley at the weekend, manager David Moyes will be concerned that his side failed to test the opposition once again. managing only one shot on target all game.

And as he has often done lately, Antonio has failed to provide any sort of influence in the final third, making it just the one goal in his last 11 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

The 31-year-old talisman endured an absolute nightmare in north London – across 90 minutes on the pitch, he registered only 43 touches, in which he provided just six accurate passes from 15 attempts (40%).

Nor was he responsible for any of their shots on goal. A worrying sign.

Some of the blame may fall Coufal’s way but it’s performances like this from Antonio that should be called into question as he’s holding West Ham back with his poor form right now.

Elsewhere, the £10.8m-rated Jamaican international was lightweight and weak in his battles, managing just one successful dribble from four attempts, whilst he lost possession a whopping 27 times (the most in the game) and won just 18% of his total duels, both aerially and on the ground.

That shows he struggled to combat the threat from Gabriel and Ben White in the opposition’s backline. Antonio handed the ball back to Arsenal once every 1.6 touches, which is appalling.

football.london journalist Tom Clark was less than impressed, grading the Irons frontman amongst the worst performers. ‘Saw very little of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, worked hard tracking back but was wasteful in possession,’ he wrote, before later adding: ‘another poor display from the striker.’

On the above evidence, it was another shocking outing from the frontline veteran, one that will surely leave Moyes feeling badly let down, having kept the faith in his star striker once more.

Young guns fire to topple old heroes

The retired legends delivered some stinging lessons but it was the young pups of Michael Clarke’s Australian XI who stole the Twenty20 exhibition at the Gabba. While the current generation was under pressure in the first half of both innings, it surged back each time to claim a 17-run success. When Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden were together the Australian Cricketers’ Association XI had a strong chance in their chase of 5 for 173, but once Hayden departed in the ninth over it took a while for Lee Carseldine and Travis Birt to regain the momentum. And when they both fell in the space of five balls the end was near, with the side finishing at 9 for 156.Carseldine started cautiously and found some touch with a couple of fours before a massive pulled six off the expensive Peter Siddle, who took 2 for 35 off three. Birt joined in the fun with another clearance off Siddle that kept them on target and they needed 58 from the final five overs. However Birt (26) fell to Clint McKay, leaving the score at 4 for 118, and Carseldine (41 off 31) departed in the following over with a miscued pull and a fine running take from Brad Haddin. McKay also knocked over Rhett Lockyear and Nathan Reardon to lead the figures with 3 for 18 while Shaun Tait and Steven Smith picked up two wickets each. Warne finished the game by taking Smith for a four, six and a two to the joy of the crowd.Gilchrist had begun the chase by slashing Tait, whose pace peaked at 155kph, for four through point and followed up in the next by driving Siddle for four before immediately pulling him for six. Hayden then charged Siddle and thrashed him down the ground to show his power had not evaporated in retirement.Siddle switched ends after his first effort went for 19 and he got Gilchrist to edge to Cameron White at first slip, concluding his bright stay at 21 off 21 deliveries. Next ball Daniel Harris nibbled at Siddle for the same result as the bowler found form at the Stanley Street End in his Test warm-up.Hayden was keen to dominate and he fired the legspinner Steven Smith for a four straight down the ground before winning a reprieve to a tight call when Clarke claimed a low catch at cover. The game was a friendly but the decision was referred to the third umpire. It didn’t matter as Smith had Hayden stumped for 25 off 22 in an eventful over.Caught Gilchrist bowled McGrath made a return to the scorebook in the fourth over of the game when Warner (15) edged trying to push off the back foot. Glenn McGrath followed up with a bouncer to Clarke to collect a rare wicket maiden and returned later in the innings to remove David Hussey (22) and Adam Voges in two deliveries. The hat-trick ball struck White in the ribs and he finished with 3 for 18 from four overs, a haul made more impressive by his occasional appearances since retiring. The opener Haddin was caught by Warne at cover attempting a seventh four and he walked off with 33 off 21 balls, having pushed his side to 2 for 67. When Warne (0 for 33) entered the attack to a loud cheer Haddin, who had enjoyed Jason Krejza’s opening spell, pulled a short ball for a boundary and finished the over with another smart lofted four down the ground.Clarke, who was careful in reaching a run-a-ball 27, was caught behind pushing at Reardon and the regular interruptions threatened to prevent the Australian XI from making a big total. But White showed some muscle at the end of the innings, blasting three sixes in his 44 from 24, to inflate the total with help from George Bailey’s 30 from 16. Three clearances in Nathan Rimmington’s final over, including ones over fine-leg and long-on by Bailey, resulted in 24 runs and a huge boost to the innings.Gilchrist had also taken supporters back to Australia’s glory days with his call from behind the stumps of “nice Shane” before he left the field after ten overs to be replaced by Graham Manou. Since the greats have retired Australia have slipped from first to fourth in the Test rankings, something they will be hoping to change from Thursday’s first Test against West Indies.

Younis Khan's chances of playing in Sydney thin

No further decision was taken on the Pakistan team management’s request to call up the former captain to bolster the batting

Osman Samiuddin in Melbourne30-Dec-2009

Even if the team management’s request is accepted tomorrow and Younis Khan were to leave the same day, he might struggle to be ready in time for the Test on Sunday•Associated Press

The chances of Younis Khan appearing for Pakistan in the New Year Test in Sydney have reduced significantly after no further decision was taken on the Pakistan team management’s request to call up the former captain to bolster the batting. The second Test is due to begin on January 3 and given the considerable travel time between the two countries, even if the request is accepted tomorrow and Younis were to leave the same day, he might struggle to be ready in time for the Test on Sunday. In any case, it appears as if the selection committee is not entirely convinced of the need for Younis, at least without him having attempted to find some kind of form first in the RBS Pentangular Cup, a domestic tournament due to begin on January 1. “It is not like the team is losing just because he isn’t there,” a member of the selection committee told Cricinfo.”The Pentangular is happening and that would be a good way for him to play and get some practice. The Sydney Test is looking very unlikely right now and no decision was taken today. And who will he replace there? Various batsmen have scored some runs here so it might be unfair to drop them.”Initially, the selection committee appeared to be waiting for the result of the first Test in Melbourne, which Pakistan ultimately lost by 170 runs, before taking a decision. Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan’s captain, reiterated after the match that the side needed Younis and that a request had been made some time ago.But there appears to be a gap in communication: one selector claims that no official request has come in writing to them from Australia and another said that the chairman of the PCB, Ijaz Butt, had received the request and was going to consider it after discussing it with the selectors. That, in all probability, will now happen tomorrow.Amid the confusion, it is increasing likely that Pakistan will have to do without Younis as they attempt to level the series in Sydney. Pakistan’s batting struggled in both innings of the first Test, bowled out for 258 and 251 on what was widely acknowledged to be an unusually placid MCGsurface. On the final morning, they lost seven wickets for 81 and it prolonged a run in which they have, as a side, passed 350 only twice in 14 Test innings.

Leeds keen on re-signing Ronaldo Vieira

Leeds United are interested in re-signing former Whites midfielder Ronaldo Vieira, according to a transfer rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Vieira’s time at Leeds

Vieira made 71 appearances for Leeds prior to their return to the Premier League, adopting a holding midfield role and playing 63 times in the Championship, so he is already a familiar face to the Yorkshire faithful.

His impact at Elland Road eventually saw him earn a move to Sampdoria in 2018 but he has fallen out of favour there, being loaned out to Hellas Verona last season.

Vieira has appeared only once this term due to injury and it could be that he looks for a move elsewhere in the January transfer window.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375277″]

The Latest: Whites linked with Vieira move

According to Club Doria 46 [via Sport Witness], Leeds are eyeing up a move for Vieira after he was ‘one step away’ from joining Sheffield United in the summer.

A move back to England is thought to appeal to the 23-year-old and the Whites are ‘focusing on this aspect’ as a way of trying to entice the player back to the club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Does it make sense?

Leeds simply must make midfield reinforcements in January, with Kalvin Phillips out injured for a lengthy period and Adam Forshaw still only recently back from nearly two years on the sidelines.

Despite his previous at the club, though, there would be an element of risk in re-signing Vieira, considering that he hasn’t exactly thrived in Italy and hasn’t played since March because of injury. Also, while he may have been a regular for the Whites before, that was when they were a mid-table Championship outfit rather than the Premier League club they are now.

If the three-time former England under-21 international is to come in, there needs to be another more proven top-flight player signed as well, or Leeds could find themselves not much better off.

In other news, one man has been backed as the favourite to eventually replace Marcelo Bielsa. Find out who it is here.

Former PCB chairman criticises amendments

Nasim Ashraf has criticised the amendments made to the board’s constitution which, he believes, provide the sports ministry with the authority to undermine the board’s independence

Cricinfo staff08-Jan-2010

“This will prove the death knell for Pakistan cricket,” Nasim Ashraf said about the amendments•AFP

Former PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf has said the amendments made to the board’s constitution provide the sports ministry with the authority to undermine the board’s independence. The amendments, recently approved by the constitutional committee, sparked fears of the PCB being consigned to a subordinate role in running Pakistan cricket.”This will prove the death knell for Pakistan cricket,” Ashraf told Dawn. “Nowhere in the world are cricket boards run by any government body. Even in the time of Justice Cornelius, the cricket board always kept its independence and autonomy for good reasons. One can only wonder at the motive of the sports ministry. This will further make cricket victim of political vagaries and bureaucratic red-tapism.”The amendments gave the sports ministry a significant say in the functioning of the PCB. The board could now be directed by the sports ministry to take actions that it saw fit to ensure efficiency in administration and governance. Also, the government could now appoint a nominee to the PCB committees involved in tendering contracts and organising the bidding process for broadcasting rights to cricket matches. An independent governing board headed by a visionary and competent chairman acting as a chief executive, Ashraf said, was in the best interests of Pakistan cricket. “An independent Governing Board comprising regional presidents as well as technocrats should make up the full authority, with the chairman working as chief executive to provide leadership and vision to the Governing Board.”Ashraf added he had appealed to the patron-in-chief of Pakistan cricket, President Asaf Ali Zardari, to review the amendments and said he hoped the current PCB administration will heed the views of former chairmen, including Shahryar Khan, on the matter. “I wish the authority consider the views of the former chairmen of the PCB, who have no interest except love for the game and the country as they have played their innings.”
