A arrancada do Sport no Brasileirão saltou os olhos nas últimas rodadas. Após um início marcado por oscilação, a equipe engatou uma sequência de quatro vitórias em cinco jogos – a mais recente, a goleada por 4 a 0 sobre o Atlético-GO, que consolidou a ida ao G6 da competição.

O panorama do Leão, que tem folha salarial em torno de R$ 3,5 milhões, é visto como promissor pela imprensa local. Repórter da Rádio Jornal, Igor Moura apontou ao LANCE! os divisores de águas para a equipe:

– A chegada de Vanderlei Luxemburgo pesou muito. Com a grande trajetória de títulos que tem, ele pôde cobrar dos jogadores uma nova atitude. O divisor de águas veio na derrota do Sport para o Vitória, quando ele fez cobranças duras ao fim da partida. A equipe cresceu muito, fez jogos duríssimos, foi conseguindo uma série de vitórias no Brasileirão… Para completar, venceu o título pernambucano e segue bem na Copa Aul-Americana.

Aos olhos do repórter Paulo de Tarso, a postura de Luxemburgo trouxe uma mudança de atitude dos leoninos no gramado:

– Os jogadores passaram a acreditar na recuperação e ela veio de imediato. Coletivamente, o time está respondendo e os resultados estão aí.

Moura apontou algumas mudanças também na equipe:

– A marcação ficou mais organizada, e apenas Ronaldo Alves surge como titular absoluto. Além disto, Mena caiu como uma luva no Sport, e tornou-se tanto importante no apoio à defesa quanto opção crucial para jogadas de ataque. Nos outros setores, Rithely vem rendendo bem, Diego Souza aparece sempre que é preciso, e André está em ótima fase. O Sport tem feito uma mescla de idade muito importante, na qual experientes como Durval e jovens como Everton Felipe e Patrick funcionam muito bem em campo.

Paulo de Tarso apontou que o ambiente do elenco também é fundamental para o Leão ir bem no Brasileirão:

– Todos se sentem à vontade no clube. André e Diego Souza jogaram juntos em 2015, reeditaram a parceria, Patrick surgiu muito bem e Everton Felipe amadureceu demais com Luxemburgo.

A expectativa por um fim de ano com boas alegrias não parece tão distante do Sport:

– Muitos dizem que este time do Sport é tão talentoso quanto o de 2015, que acabou o Brasileiro em sexto lugar. É impressionante como o elenco está muito seguro em campo – declarou Igor Moura.

Já Paulo de Tarso apontou que a pretensão é partir para as primeiras colocações:

-Há um bom investimento no clube e o discurso é brigar por algo grande. O Sport tem esta pretensão. É bem organizado, tem boa estrutura, consegue segurar seus principais jogadores.

The Australians went in without a specialist spinner in Johannesburg because of the seamer-friendly conditions and the strong pace attack was the key in their 162-run series-opening victory.The second Test begins at Kingsmead on Friday and Australia’s two slow men, Bryce McGain and Nathan Hauritz, are hoping to be in contention. However, the three genuine fast bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus performed strongly and their medium-pace backup Andrew McDonald built the pressure with economical spells and collected a wicket in each innings.On the final day at the Wanderers, McGain and Hauritz spent the lunch break sending down deliveries on a practice pitch out in the middle as they aimed to see if there was some turn. Both men spun the ball but it might not be enough to force any changes in an Australian side that used Marcus North as a part-time offspinner in Johannesburg.”We went in here with the team we did because of the conditions and what history suggested for this venue,” Ponting said after the Wanderers win. “We’ll have to have a closer look at that for Durban. One thing we do know down there is that the ball will always swing in Durban as well, particularly early in the game.”We’ll have a look at it but it will be hard to change this team. This side has played really well over five days. There have been really valuable contributions from everyone when they needed to do it, and when I asked them to do it. That’s a sign of a good, hungry team of players willing to do whatever it takes to win a game for you.”Both squads travelled on Tuesday to Durban, where their most recent meeting resulted in a tight Australian victory as the light faded on the fifth day. Shane Warne was the star with six wickets in the second innings but his success is the exception rather than the rule at Kingsmead, where fast men have usually been more effective.South Africa have not played a specialist spinner in their most recent two Tests at the venue and Anil Kumble is the only slow man besides Warne to have collected at least three wickets in an innings there since 2002. Paul Harris should hold his place for this game but Graeme Smith said it would be a friendly pitch for the fast men in the opening few days.”Generally Durban is a good wicket with good pace and bounce,” Smith said. “It has been over the last period of time a really good Test wicket that deteriorates as the Test match goes on so certainly as a team we won’t be making any panicky changes. We’ve got Albie Morkel coming into the squad but other than that it’s just about improving our standards.”

Marcus Trescothick, the former England opener, says he has turned down a request from Andrew Strauss to make himself available for selection to the squad for the World Twenty20 in June. Trescothick said though he would have loved a return to the England side, he knew the dangers to his health of committing himself to international cricket would be far too great. England announced a preliminary squad for the tournament earlier this week.”After taking everything into consideration, I reluctantly had to tell Strauss that playing for England again was just not possible,” Trescothick told the . “I had no choice but to say no. I might be wrong, but I still believe that if it was as simple as turning up and batting for England, I could do it and succeed.”Playing cricket for England was the great ambition of my life and, until I became ill, I loved everything about it, so not being able to do so now is a source of great regret. I miss the buzz and the stage and the chance to put my ability to the sternest test, and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about it often.”Trescothick, who quit international cricket in March 2008 after struggling with a stress-related illness, said he did not want to put himself and his family in risk again. “I appreciate the thought and I know Strauss was not trying to put me under any pressure. The management have been very sensitive about my situation, and that has helped me in my decision-making. But the time truly has come for me to stop dreaming and face reality. As much as I’d love to have another bash for England, it isn’t going to happen, at any level.”I really hope everyone can accept that part of my story is over for good. The Verdict: Great option…

Scoring 151 career goals at club level so far, Belotti has been called an ‘extraordinary striker’ by former Torino boss Moreno Longo (Football Italia).

Signing Belotti either for free next summer or on a cut price move in January could certainly be a masterstroke given he is an experienced goal-getter and 39-cap international – especially as a mere back-up to Antonio.

The Torino captain should, at the very least, be a target for West Ham.

A number of Wolves supporters erupted over a hilarious tweet which was posted by the club’s official channel after the dramatic 3-2 win away to Aston Villa.

Bruno Lage’s side pulled off one of the comebacks of the season on Saturday afternoon – in fact, it’s hard to think of many better in the Premier League. Wolves were 2-0 down at Villa Park with just over 10 minutes left to play and looked set to lose the bragging rights in the local derby, only for them to produce a stunning fightback.

Romain Saiss pulled a goal back, Conor Coady equalised in scrappy fashion and Ruben Neves’ deflected free-kick won it at the death.

The scenes in the away end were remarkable, so much so that Wolves’ official Twitter account posted a photo of a shoe which had been left behind near the Villa Park away end amidst the celebrations.
