Southampton: Walcott back for Wolves clash

Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided an injury update on Southampton winger Theo Walcott…

What’s the latest?

The Saints manager has revealed that the 32-year-old has returned to fitness ahead of the clash with Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Austrian told the Daily Echo: “Theo Walcott was back in training today for first time in a long time, and the rest yeah so far fit, Stuey (Armstrong) still unavailable and that’s it.

“Stuey has not been training with the group, and yes Theo was this week starting with the team sessions so it will take time until he’s on the level but it’s good to have him back, and important to give him training sessions with the team.”

Fans will be delighted

Southampton fans will be delighted with this news as it means that Hasenhuttl has one more option to call upon in the wide areas. The Saints have struggled with the two wide positions in the team this season, with Moussa Djenepo, Nathan Redmond and Mohamed Elyounoussi all flattering to deceive.

Djenepo and Redmond have started six Premier League games between them and have produced zero goals and zero assists. Elyounoussi, meanwhile, has started three games and provided one goal and zero assists in the league for Hasenhuttl.

This suggests that Southampton’s wide players have struggled with their end product in the top flight. Therefore, having another player coming into the mix could bring a welcome boost, as it offers an alternative option in the team whilst also providing competition for the players currently occupying the wide berths in the starting XI.

Last year, Hasenhuttl lauded the forward’s work ethic on the pitch, saying: “I’m happy to work with Theo, he definitely showed it means something to him to play for this club. You can feel how much he invests working for the team.”

This highlights one of the qualities Walcott could bring to the side. His pressing from the front could open up opportunities for others by forcing mistakes from opposition defenders and causing turnovers, allowing his teammates to pick up the ball and cause damage in the final third.

Therefore, fans may well be delighted to see the 32-year-old back involved in some capacity against Wolves. They know that he will give 110% on the pitch by working hard out wide, which illustrates why his return could be a boost to Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Joe Aribo stole the show vs Motherwell

Rangers failed to return to winning ways as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox by Motherwell on Sunday afternoon.

Fashion Sakala got off the mark with his first goal for Rangers to put the club in front, but a second half equaliser from Kaiyne Woolery secured a point for the away side.

Motherwell only managed one shot on target in the entire match, compared to the home team’s 24 shots and seven on target at the other end. However, Steven Gerrard’s side were unable to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

Despite Sakala finding the back of the net, the Zambian forward did not quite steal the show for Rangers. Instead it was central midfielder Joe Aribo, who took his place in the midfield three after a difficult night out wide against Lyon on Thursday.

The former Charlton man was deployed as a winger against the French outfit and struggled to show his best qualities, but that changed against Motherwell as Gerrard placed him back in his more favoured central role.

Offensively, he was outstanding today. As per SofaScore, he created six chances, including two ‘big chances’, and set up Sakala’s opener. He also completed all four of his attempted dribbles and 76% of his passes. This shows that he stepped up in terms of creativity and was able to hand his teammates opportunities in front of goal, but Rangers were only able to make the most of it on one occasion.

Aribo was also not afraid to put himself about in the midfield and win his 50-50s. As per SofaScore, he won an impressive 69% of his duels on the pitch, coming out on top in seven of his 10 ground duels and two of his three in the air, whilst also making one tackle and one interception.

This shows that he stood up to the physical test of Motherwell and was able to hold his own. He was then able to merge that with his quality on the ball, with the aforementioned creative statistics showing that he put in a complete performance.

Rangers did not win but Aribo created enough chances for them to do so, which is why he stole the show ahead of other players. Gerrard must be buzzing with the midfielder’s display and hoping that the Nigerian can keep up a similar level of performance throughout the rest of the campaign.

Pakistan focus on Mendis

Pakistan’s batsmen have been practising on shorter pitches to try and counter the threat of Ajantha Mendis in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Tuesday at the National Stadium in Karachi.Mendis, the quickest bowler to 50 ODI wickets, has been a dominant theme in Pakistan’s thinking ahead of the short series. Pakistan have come across Mendis twice, once in the Asia Cup and then in the final of the four-nation Twenty 20 in Canada. Seven wickets in 14 overs in the two games means Pakistan aren’t wrong to focus heavily on him.One man who has succeeded against him is Misbah-ul-Haq, who made 76 in a losing cause during the Asia Cup and an unbeaten 23 in the Twenty20 final. The Pakistan vice-captain took 27 runs off 24 Mendis deliveries in Karachi last year, including two sixes and a four, before he was bowled slogging. He believes a similarly aggressive approach might help dent his effectiveness.”We saw him in the Asia Cup and even though he took four wickets, he went for a few runs [47],” said Misbah. “We will definitely try to attack and unnerve him. It’s in the mind. If you allow a bowler to dominate you, he will and if you don’t, he won’t.”A number of Pakistan’s batsmen have spoken of the pace which Mendis bowls at as being the key to his success. So reading him off the pitch or from the hand, goes the thinking, is important, but not as much as adjusting to his pace, which allows you little time to adjust. As Imran Khan famously did before a series against the West Indies in 1987-88, batsmen have practiced on shorter surfaces, to counter an altogether different threat.”We are practicing a lot for Mendis,” said Misbah. “We’re playing bowlers from shorter distances so we can counter the fast pace. There is no reason why we cannot handle him because all Pakistan players are good against spin.”Intent is one thing, execution another altogether and as his captain Mahela Jayawardene pointed out, Mendis is a man who doesn’t fret about pressure. “He hasn’t had added pressure and has gone through all the batting line-ups he has come across. He is enjoying his challenges and pressure does not affect him as he is a very simple guy. He doesn’t have to go through such interviews because his knowledge of English is not that great so he rests in his room watching movies.”Having one of the game’s greatest spinners at the other end is no bad thing either. “He knows what his role is and there are some really good guys around him giving him advice especially Murali who is a brilliant role model. He has worked very hard for 18 years, gone through so many issues and come through very well. As long as Ajantha realises that and goes along the same path as Murali, I’m sure we’ll have a big match-winner for us in the next ten years.”

Darren Moore must drop Jaden Brown v Oxford

Sheffield Wednesday have gathered a rather mixed bag of results in their current League One campaign so far, winning four, drawing two and losing three of their opening nine league games of the season. That has left them in ninth place in the table with a home clash against Oxford United coming up this Saturday.

The Owls’ latest league match saw them beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at the DW Stadium, ultimately knocking their opponents off top spot in the table.

Despite Darren Moore’s side managing to take all three points in midweek thanks to an own goal from Max Power and a second half strike from Callum Paterson, there was one Owls player in the game who did not have a particularly successful night.

On The Chalkboard

Left-back Jaden Brown, who played in a more advanced role against Wigan and has done throughout the season so far, lost possession 12 times and ultimately earned himself a rather disappointing overall match rating of 5.8/10, making him Wednesday’s lowest-rated player on the night according to SofaScore.

Since joining the Owls on a free transfer from Championship club Huddersfield Town during the summer transfer window, the 22-year-old – who is currently valued at £450k according to Transfermarkt – has made six appearances across all competitions for Wednesday, but has yet to score a goal or provide an assist for the team.

Looking ahead to the match against Oxford, we feel that it would be the best if Moore were to drop Brown from the team on this occasion and give Olamide Shodipo – who recently defended Moore and Wednesday’s start to the season – a chance to see if he can be a better fit for the team on the left of midfield.

Moving forward, if Moore decides to stick with Brown in that position, the 22-year-old will need to vastly improve upon what he delivered on the pitch against Wigan, or else he could soon find himself out of the team as the season progresses.

Sennik under pressure after a second resignation

Ben Sennik faces some tough questions after the resignation of Mike Kendall as the board’s first vice-president

Cricinfo staff23-Feb-2009Attempts by Cricket Canada to gloss over the sudden removal of Atul Ahuja as chief executive at the end of January have been blown away by the resignation of Mike Kendall as the board’s first vice-president.Ben Sennik, the chairman, had brushed aside suggestions that Ahuja’s departure came about because of fundamental differences between the two of them, but in a brief statement Kendall made clear that was at the root of his decision. In a one-paragraph letter to Sennik, he wrote: “Due to consistently substantial difference of opinion, on important policy matters and the direction of Cricket Canada under your leadership, I am hereby resigning … effective immediately.”Whereas Ahuja has kept below the radar since he left, probably because of contractual obligations, Kendall, who was in a non-paid role, will have no such restrictions, and Sennik now faces some tough questions as to what is really going on behind the scenes.

Leeds: Shackleton an unsung hero vs Watford

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds moved up to 16th in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Watford at Elland Road on Saturday.

Diego Llorente brilliantly finished from close range after the ball dropped at an awkward angle for him, expertly turning his body to drill a shot past Ben Foster.

His strike ended up winning the three points for Leeds, as Watford only managed one shot on target in the entire match.

Whilst Llorente won the game for the Whites, one player who was an unsung hero for Bielsa was right-back Jamie Shackleton.

With regular starter Luke Ayling ruled out, Shackleton was called upon to step up at full-back for the second game running and he produced an excellent performance. He was defensively solid along with offering a reliable outlet on the ball down the right, which played a part in allowing Leeds to dominate the game and ultimately beat the Hornets.

In terms of his defending, Shakleton was superb. Per SofaScore, he won eight of his 11 ground duels and made two clearances and four tackles. Along with that, he did not allow a single Watford player to dribble past him in the 90 minutes.

This shows that he was strong in the challenge and positionally aware, as he was not exposed by any players dribbling past him. By being solid at the back, Emmanuel Dennis was limited to one shot in the game and had a dribble success rate of 0% on the left wing, coming up against Shackleton.

On the ball, the youngster also impressed. Via SofaScore, he had a whopping 96 touches of the ball in the 90 minutes. Shackleton was successful with two of his three attempted dribbles and completed 84% of his passes, whilst also winning two fouls and managing one shot in the final third.

He was active on the ball throughout the match and assured in possession, as he completed the vast majority of his passes. His dribbling success shows that he was also able to offer quality in transition, beating players to push Leeds up the pitch and get the team closer to the Watford goal to build pressure on the Hornets.

Therefore, forget Llorente, Shackleton was Leeds’ unsung hero against Watford. He merged strong defending with composure on the ball and Bielsa will surely be hoping that he can maintain this level of performance until Ayling is fit to return.
