Whelan thinks Richarlison could leave

Noel Whelan says Everton would find an offer in the region of £80million-£90million for Richarlison ‘hard to turn down’ amid rumoured interest from Real Madrid.

The lowdown

Football Insider reported at the start of June that Carlo Ancelotti is keen to bring Richarlison with him to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid’s interest has not progressed beyond talks at this point, but they could make a bid later in the window.

Everton struck a £50million deal to sign Richarlison from Watford back in 2018, and he’s gone on to make 119 appearances for the club, scoring 42 goals.

The Brazilian endured a somewhat tricky 2020/21 campaign, his tally of seven Premier League goals beaten by relegated players like David McGoldrick and Matheus Pereira. He also considerably under-performed his expected goal total of 10.18.

Ancelotti had told him that 30 goals should be a ‘minimum target’ prior to the season.

The latest

Whelan recalled that Everton turned out a mammoth £85million bid from FC Barcelona for Richarlison in January 2020.

But he suspects that they might be more inclined to accept a similar offer this time around.

“We do know they’ve already fended off approaches from Barcelona for this player,” he told Football Insider.

“How long can they do that? If money comes, and it’s a big amount of money – it’s got to be close to £80million-£90million to prise him away – it would be hard to turn down for Everton.”

The verdict

Richarlison’s stock is high. He’s only 24 years old, he joined Everton for huge money after only one season in the Premier League and he started five games for Brazil at the recent Copa America.

The kind of money offered by Barcelona, and that could be offered by Real Madrid, isn’t necessarily justified by his performances to date. They’re paying for the player he could become, of course, but you’re always left wanting more from Richarlison.

You do wonder if Everton would be wise to accept and reinvest such a sum, which may exceed his true value.

Bevan facing fitness fight

Michael Bevan is back at Grace Road after playing for Australia in the one-day series against Pakistan over the last three weeks

Leicestershire CCC27-Jun-2002Michael Bevan is back at Grace Road after playing for Australia in the one-day series against Pakistan over the last three weeks. But he may not be in the side against Nottinghamshire Outlaws in Sunday’s Norwich Union League game at Trent Bridge.Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase revealed: “Bevan is still nursing a groin injury and at the moment his chances of being fit for Sunday are 50-50.”I would like him to play because it is an important match for us, but there is no point in taking risks. He certainly expects to be ready for the Championship match against Lancashire which starts at Grace Road next Wednesday. But we will see how he progresses in the next day or so, and if he can play at Trent Bridge he will.”We have certainly missed him while he has been away because he is a world class batsman. But that is no disrespect to Grant Flower who has stood in for Michael. Grant has done an excellent job for us as the overseas player, and it is not his fault that we have lost our way a little bit in recent games.”But there were a lot of positives from our performance against India in the one-day game on Wednesday, and I think we can build on that for the second-half of the season.”One player who impressed in that match was Rob Cunliffe who has had few opportunites so far because of injury. Whitticase said: “Rob batted very well at the end of our innings and has certainly put himself into contention for Sunday. We may well look at playing an extra batsman as we did on many occasions last season. If we decide to do that Rob is in with a good chance of being included.”

Gers fans rage at club tweet

Glasgow Rangers fans were far from happy with a video published by the club on Twitter ahead of their pre-season clash with Arsenal on Saturday.

The Gers enjoyed a fantastic campaign last term as they won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years without losing a single league game (thefishy.co.uk). However, the Gers supporters were unable to enjoy that success as they usually would – the coronavirus pandemic prevented them from attending Ibrox and other stadiums across Scotland.

This term, there is likely to be supporters allowed throughout the campaign, although massively reduced. For the Gers’ pre-season clash with Arsenal, only 2,000 supporters were allowed (rangers.co.uk). Prior to the match, the Gers shared a video requesting fans to follow their instructions on how to act in the stadium throughout the 90 minutes.

The video was shared on the Gers’ official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the video below

“Big crowds ain’t happening any time soon. Shambles.”

“A match against such a great club should have been held back until the crowds were allowed back to normal, even if that meant next summer. Shambles.”

“Sounds absolutely garbage. I get the club are in a thankless position, but this is just grim.”

“Haha what a shambles”

“No worth the hassle IMO. I would rather watch in the house or in a pub with my mates. This is gonna be brutal, especially when we start seeing full crowds elsewhere in the UK.”

“This is depressing nonsense. If tests are required, then how can restricted attendance be justified?! Control, thats what this is about!”

Jayasuriya disappointed despite landslide victory

It may not have healed the scars of their battering in England, but SriLanka will be hoping that normal service has resumed after an emphaticinnings and 196 run victory against Bangladesh, the largest ever win in their 126 Test history

Charlie Austin23-Jul-2002It may not have healed the scars of their battering in England, but SriLanka will be hoping that normal service has resumed after an emphaticinnings and 196 run victory against Bangladesh, the largest ever win in their 126 Test history.Unfortunately, as captain Sanath Jayasuriya admitted afterwards, the hardtruth is that the win only glosses over the side’s current problems. Despitewinning within three days and scoring a record 509 runs on the second day,Sri Lanka can take few positives out of a game they were expected to win bya country mile. The fast bowlers were poor in both innings: Dilhara Fernando and hisnamesake Buddika were short and erratic; debutante left-armer Sujeewa deSilva swung the odd ball, but did little to suggest he would prosper againstone of the major Test nations. The normally mild mannered Jayasuriya was scathing afterwards: “It was goodto see us winning a Test match again but I am not happy with the bowlers. They failed to bowl a consistent line and length and there were too many noballs. We bowled poorly in England and again here. It’s a problem – we havegot to sort it out as soon as possible.”And the batting coughed and spluttered against teenage medium pacers untilAravinda de Silva pulled on his 19 years of experience to rescue the hostsfrom severe embarrassment. Sanath Jayasuriya’s tenth Test century, asentertaining as it was, meant little against such a flimsy attack, even ifit was made in the middle order, his new home. The fact that it was the experience players that dug Sri Lanka out of a holeearly on the second day was not lost on Jayasuriya, who is unhappy that theselectors have decided to rest five more players for the second Test matchstarting Sunday, including vice captain Marvan Atapattu, star batsman MahelaJayawardene, Russel Arnold, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan.”You need some experience,” he argued. “Yesterday we were 56 for three andit was only because of the experience in the middle order that we managed toget the runs. Next game there will only be Hashan Tillakaratne and ThilanSamaraweera with me.”He wants Muralitharan to play: “He’s naturally disappointed, as anyone wouldbe to miss a game. If Murali is fit we should go with him. But the selectorshave picked the side and I have to go with it. I don’t know anything aboutmost of the youngsters, as I have not played with them.”Muralitharan was man of the match here. Playing on his home ground for thefirst time in his Test career, the off-spinner spun out the middle order toclaim his 36th five-for, equally Sir Richard Hadlee’s world record. Hefinished with ten for 98 in the match, his 11th tenth wicket haul.Bangladesh’s Pakistan coach, Mohsin Kamal, in charge for the first time, identified Muralitharan as the major factor: “It was only Muralitharan, whogets wickets against the bigger teams as well. Him taking five is not a bigdeal against us, but we have to make sure he conceded more runs. We have tominimise our mistakes against him.”It was, however, Sri Lanka’s new ball bowlers that made the early inroads, reducing Bangladesh to 14 for two before a 77 run stand between top scorerAl Sahariar (67) and the experienced Habibul Bashar (34).Eventually, Jayasuriya’s exasperation with his aerosol attack forced him toturn to spin at both ends. Muralitharan struck in his sixth over, cleanbowling Bashar as the right-hander tried to force through the off-side. 22minutes later he was left on a hat-trick as both Akram Khan (5) and AminulIslam (0) popped up bat-pad catches. When Muralitharan dismissed Al Sahariar in a similar manner, straight afterthe luncheon interval, Bangladesh knew they could not last into the fourthday, despite a brave two-hour 26 from captain Khaled Mashud. When he topedged a sweep of Aravinda de Silva, the tourists were all out for 184.For Bangladesh, the greatest positive, apart from the news that they don’thave to face Muralitharan next game, was the performance of their teenagemedium pacers. Khan, a fast bowler himself, praised their effortsafterwards: “They bowled according to the conditions, keeping their line, and got the results. The rest of the day they were on and off, but they areyoung and have shown good improvement in the last month.”

Crystal Palace linked to Ozan Kabak

Crystal Palace have made an inquiry over Schalke defender Ozan Kabak after he impressed during a loan spell at Liverpool last season.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, Palace has asked about the 21-year-old’s availability ahead of a potential move, with an £8.5m price tag plus add ons mooted.

The report also states that Kabak has drawn inquiries from Sevilla and several Bundesliga clubs, while fellow Premier League side Leicester City have been heavily-linked with the 6 ft 1 centre-back.

Imagine him and Guehi

After an injury crisis saw all three of Liverpool’s senior central defenders pick up season-ending issues before Christmas last term, Jurgen Klopp turned to Kabak.

The youngster struggled to get to grips with the physical demands of the Premier League in his first couple of outings, but he soon adapted and played a pivotal part as the Anfield outfit recovered from a run of dreadful form to finish third in the top-flight standings.

However, Liverpool passed up on the opportunity to make his stay on Merseyside permanent for £18m, choosing to bring in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig instead.

Now though, with Schalke suffering relegation from the Bundesliga, the German outfit are desperate to generate funds and get one of their highest earners off the wage bill, meaning Kabak is available for a discount price.

It’s a transfer that Palace chairman Steve Parish can’t afford to miss out on, and he must swoop for the defender labelled a “big prospect” by Klopp last season.

The south London outfit are currently undergoing a major rebuild of the first-team squad, with new manager Patrick Vieira already bringing in several new signings.

Following the departures of ageing trio Mamadou Sakho, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann, Vieira has secured the signature of former Chelsea ace Marc Guehi.

The 21-year-old powerhouse impressed during a loan spell at Championship outfit Swansea City throughout 2020/21, and the youthful partnership of Guehi and Kabak is one that could flourish and excite the Selhurst Park faithful for many years to come.

And, in other news…Parish must complete CPFC swoop for “special” £20m gem who can “eliminate players”
