Leeds: Whites agree to pay Nandez release clause

Leeds United look set to break their transfer record for the second consecutive summer by signing Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Lowdown: Smyth not so sure

Even though the links to Nandez appear to be gathering pace abroad, Yorkshire Evening Post’s chief football writer Graham Smyth isn’t so sure.

He replied to a Leeds fan on Twitter last weekend, insisting the Uruguayan wasn’t on the club’s shortlist the last time he checked.

Of course, things can change, and reports closer to the Serie A club clearly think the Whites are closing in on the 25-year-old, who can play as a defensive, central or right midfielder.

The Latest: Reports from Italy

According to Corriere dello Sport, Leeds have decided to pay the €36m (£31m) clause in Nandez’s contract.

The report leads with a title claiming a move for Nandez is done, however, Leeds are still hoping to pay the fee in two instalments.

The two clubs’ excellent relationship has generated a strong feeling an agreement regarding payment structure will come, but whatever way you look at it, a £31m deal would see Nandez become Leeds’ most expensive signing, eclipsing the £27m move for Rodrigo Moreno last summer.

The Verdict: A marquee addition

Should the recent report prove accurate and Nandez does indeed move to Yorkshire, he’ll be the marquee midfield addition that seems to be required at Elland Road.

Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas and Mateusz Klich were regulars in the engine room last season, so bringing in Nandez will give Bielsa that extra body that could be crucial for Leeds to push on this season.

When Phillips was unavailable last term, the Whites won just two out of nine top flight matches, showing exactly how crucial some additional depth in midfield could be.

Nandez made 32 Serie A appearances in a plethora of different positions last season, so his flexibility could also prove extremely handy across the campaign, adding to the strength of multiple positions in the squad.

Manicaland are 269 for three after electing to bat in Mutare

Manicaland made Matabeleland toil for two sessions at Mutare Sports Clubyesterday afternoon after winning the toss and batting in favourableconditions

Nigel Fleming13-Apr-2002Manicaland made Matabeleland toil for two sessions at Mutare Sports Clubyesterday afternoon after winning the toss and batting in favourableconditions. Having hit 269 for three it’s impossible to envisage a way theycan lose the game, but coming in on four successive first-class defeats itwould still take courage to put meaningful money on them. Matabeleland hasyet to win a game themselves this season so this result will decide the footof the table. The first session was lost because overnight rain caused a wet patch on oneof the bowlers’ delivery creases. Despite the recent acquisition ofTest-size covers, ground staff tipped water onto the playing area whilstremoving them before start of play. To speed things up a burning barbecuehalf-drum was positioned above the patch and left to smolder for two hours.Manicaland owe their strong position to a splendid unbeaten 137 from captainNeil Ferreira. It was his highest first-class score to date, his third ofthe season and the sixth of his career. Offering only one chance on 88, hiscontrol was total — being particularly severe off the back foot through thecovers. Even before the innings he was talking of a possible move nextseason to Harare to further his prospects. His record and commitmentcontinue to be ignored by the selectors– even at A team level. As withcricket all over the world, to get noticed you need to play in the capitalcity. It’s ironic that senior players like Alistair Campbell, Andy Flowerand Paul Strang have moved away from Harare this season to rediscoverteam-values and spirit in Manicaland. After an opening stand of 126 with 16-year-old schoolboy Tino Mawoyo (37),Ferreira was joined by Leon Soma who blitzed a smoking 52-ball 75. His styleof controlled mayhem is a psychological crusher from number three. `Pommie’Mbangwa – recently back from Zimbabwe’s tour of India — was launched forconsecutive overs of 18 and 15.Missing Heath Streak — required on the family farm during the biggestcrisis to face the Zimbabwe farming community — the Matabeleland attacklacked the firepower to overcome a benign pitch. Opening bowler MattTownshend – son of team-manager and ex national off-spinner `Dobbo’ – wasthe best – mixing up in-swingers and slow balls — but even he could notovercome the conditions. With half-an-hour being added to the second dayManicaland will look to score quickly and declare by tea to give themselvesa chance of bowling the opposition out twice.

Celtic: Hutton reacts to Baldock interest

Football Insider pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to Celtic’s interest in Sheffield United full-back George Baldock.

The Lowdown: Baldock links

Celtic were linked with a move for the Blades defender back in 2019 following Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League.

As we know, a deal never materialised, even though Baldock was thought to be keen on a Parkhead switch.

The 28-year-old has since gone on to make 70 Premier League appearances and has once again been linked with the Hoops.

According to The Daily Record, the right-back is again on Celtic’s radar and is high on the club’s wishlist when it comes to full-back additions.

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Hutton was talking to Football Insider regarding Celtic’s interest in Baldock.

He described the defender as ‘very tough’ and believed both Celtic fans and Ange Postecoglou would like him.

“Technically, he’s very good. Great engine, gets up and down and great delivery.

“He’s got Premier League experience, Championship experience, he’s kind of got it all. I have played against him, I know him well and he is a very tough customer.

“I think someone like that coming in would be absolutely ideal. It’s a position where they need to strengthen. Obviously, Jonjoe Kenny came in and did okay.

“I don’t think it was ever going to be a permanent deal to begin with, he didn’t really set the heather alight. To bring in the likes of Baldock, he’s got that hard work mentality.

“I think that’s what Postecoglou likes within his team listening to his interviews.

“He is one I think the Celtic fans would like there. I think the manager would like him. It could be a top signing if they can get it done.”

The Verdict: A smart target

Celtic will need to add to their right-back ranks after losing both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Elhamed this year.

Jonjoe Kenny has returned to Everton following his temporary stay, so Anthony Ralston is the club’s only senior right-back on the books at this moment in time.

Baldock is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt but has just 12 months left on his Bramall Lane deal, and following Sheffield United’s relegation, could perhaps be open to a Glasgow switch once again.

He’ll certainly bring plenty of experience, should he move north, and you’d think he still has a lot to give at the age of 28.

Hutton is a fan, so it’ll be interesting to see who Celtic bring in at right-back over the coming months.

Katich joins New South Wales

New South Wales has landed a major recruiting coup overnight with confirmation that Simon Katich will be leaving his native Western Australia to join the Blues next season.

John Polack18-May-2002New South Wales has landed a major recruiting coup overnight with confirmation that Simon Katich will be leaving his native Western Australia to join the Blues next season.Katich, 26, has closed two weeks of negotiations with New South Wales officials by opting to sign a one-year contract with his new team. His decision was understood to have been influenced significantly by the opportunity to join his girlfriend, who is based in Sydney.Katich endured arguably the most frustrating first-class season of his career in 2001-02, and ultimately surrendered his Australian Cricket Board contract after amassing 585 runs in total at the average of 34.41. A family illness; internal divisions within Western Australian cricket; and a dissent hearing after an incident in a match in Hobart also made for an unhappy summer. But the left hander has still been one of Australian interstate cricket’s most prolific scorers over recent years, and his decision to shift east will add further steel to a batting line-up that is likely to be the envy of other states next summer.Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Michael Slater, Katich and fellow left-hander Michael Bevan are all expected to make a large number of appearances, and head a powerful list of talent.”Simon is exactly the sort of player we want in the Blues squad,” said New South Wales coach Steve Rixon in a short statement today.”His attitude and professionalism in discussing a move from Perth to Sydney has been extremely impressive, and I look forward to him making a strong contribution (next) summer.”Katich was Western Australia’s captain in six matches last season, and he has appeared in 50 first-class games in total for the Warriors. His talents have also seen him represent English county team Durham, and he has played one Test and a single one-day international for Australia. His only first-class century in 2001-02 was made at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Jack Harrison ‘the signing of the summer’

The permanent addition of Jack Harrison for £11m represents ‘phenomenal business’ from Leeds United, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider.

The lowdown

After three years on loan in Yorkshire, Harrison is now officially a Leeds player. The Whites paid his erstwhile parent club Manchester City an £11m fee to sign him outright.

The 24-year-old was directly involved in 16 Premier League goals in 2020/21 (eight goals, eight assists). Only Patrick Bamford (24) recorded more goal contributions for Leeds.

The latest

Whelan, who played for Leeds as a striker between 1993 and 1995, has said that the club have reaped the rewards of shrewdly negotiating an option to buy Harrison last summer.

He feels that the deal has set an early benchmark for the summer transfer window, which opened on 9 June, telling Football Insider: “£10million-£11million for a player like Jack Harrison, wow, that’s phenomenal business in today’s market.

“Credit to the club for negotiating the permanent option before he had proved himself in the Premier League.

“This is amazing business from Leeds. At that price, it’s the signing of the summer by any team.”

The verdict

‘Signing of the summer’ is quite a statement from Whelan, but who’s to say Harrison won’t be in the conversation? Indeed, if he can improve on last season’s impressive tallies, £11m will seem like a snip.

There’s every reason to think he will improve further. He’s only 24 years old and, towards the end of the 2020/21 season, he looked more confident and more accomplished than ever, as illustrated by a goal and two assists in April’s 4-0 thrashing of Burnley.

If last season’s loan hadn’t included a permanent option, Leeds would probably have had to pay at least double what they have spent on him. As it is, they’ve very astutely saved themselves crucial funds for the remainder of their summer transfer business.

In other news, Kevin Phillips dropped this intriguing verdict on a Leeds transfer target.
