Arnberger's innings a sign of good things for Victoria

The man known to his mates as ‘Cheesy’ left the Bellerive Oval here in Hobart today with a smile that befitted the tag

John Polack02-Mar-2001The man known to his mates as ‘Cheesy’ left the Bellerive Oval here in Hobart today with a smile that befitted the tag. Just as he did in the game between the twostates in Melbourne last year, Victoria’s Jason Arnberger (161*) batted through the entirety of a day’s play to lead his team into a strong position by stumps on theopening day of the Pura Cup match against Tasmania. Not even the players’ bizarre departure to an early tea break – as one bullocking Arnberger pull shot rendered the ball irretrievable for fifteen minutes – offered thehome team a genuinely lasting reprieve. As balls crashed serially into boundary hoardings and promotional billboards, so a struggling Tasmania effectively hit the wall.By the close, Victoria had reached a mark of 3/290 on a green-tinged pitch that certainly should have made high scoring a more difficult task than the Tigers let itbecome. One of the sides had entered the match with no hope left of making this season’s Pura Cup Final; the other with all of that and possibly more before it. And, fromearly in the day, it wasn’t difficult to discern which team was which. The six hours of play emphatically belonged to Arnberger, though it should be said that fellow batsmen Matthew Elliott (54) and Michael Klinger (36*) also enjoyedthemselves. With Elliott, the doughty right hander added 123 runs in a fine partnership at the start of the day before joining with Klinger to assemble an unbrokenfourth wicket stand of 118 at the end.Arnberger has come of age over the last two years, matching a 753 run haul to this stage of the 2000-01 first-class summer with the 869 that came in the precedingseason. Today, he illustrated the reasons why as his powers of concentration, his measured defence and his crunching strokeplay came together in a lovely mixture ofan innings.”He’s had (another) great season,” said his captain, Paul Reiffel, shortly after stumps were drawn.”In every season that he’s played with us since coming down from New South Wales, he’s just got better and better. He’s worked really hard, he’s a great team manand all the boys are really happy for him because he really deserves this.”The only disruption to his hand came in a bizarre few moments late in the post-lunch session. Arnberger had been strolling effortlessly toward his mountainous scoreby that stage and had just crashed an Andrew Downton (2/47) delivery high over backward square leg. Like a tennis ball attaching itself to a net, the ball not onlyslammed hard into a promotional sign beyond the ground’s eastern boundary but found its resting place there too, neatly lodging itself in the side of the billboardwhich, fittingly, promotes Tasmania’s status as an idyllic destination for visitors. This forced the players to the interval nine minutes before the scheduled stoppage time, the breather representing a more than welcome break for the listless-lookingTigers. It proved to be about the hosts’ only reprieve at Arnberger’s hands. The ball was ultimately recovered as Peter Apps’ groundstaff set about finding thenearest ladder in the ground and it was attacked just as ferociously by Arnberger when it was pressed back into service.Twice, his ability to establish early command over the game was threatened. Twice, he responded beautifully. The first hurdle came as rival captain Jamie Cox invited the Victorians to bat first on a green-tinged pitch that might have offered much in the way of early life ifArnberger had not been close to the top of his game and if the Tasmanians had not been quite as ragged with their line with the new ball. The second came later in the day when a fine spell from left arm paceman Downton netted the wickets of Matthew Mott (20) and Brad Hodge (3), generated asuccession of early lbw appeals against Klinger, and finally had the pitch showing that it was clearly not as batsman-friendly as stereotypical assumptions aboutBellerive often tend to imply.”It was a bit moist and we thought it might probably do a little bit,” said Reiffel of the pitch.”But the boys were really positive and disciplined and played well. We got off to a great start and that’s put us into a good position.”Reiffel seemed a little unsure by the close as to how long his team should bat on tomorrow and how it might best launch its bid for the outright points that it needs if itis to conceivably vault past Queensland and into top place on the Pura Cup standings by the end of this match. He said that those decisions will await a collectivediscussion in the morning and will, naturally, depend on how well his batsmen play on the resumption. But, if the team as a whole continues to play as well as Arnberger did today, then there shouldn’t be too many problems.

Leeds confirm new contract for Tyler Roberts

Leeds United have confirmed that Tyler Roberts has signed a new three-year contract to stay at Elland Road.

What’s the story?

The Wales international, who was named as a member of his country’s EUROs squad, played 28 times for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in all competitions last season, including featuring in the final 16 Premier League games.

And, speaking after confirmation of his new contract, Roberts himself said: “To be rewarded and go into the future with this club is definitely a proud moment for me and a great feeling.

“It was great to be a part of it, playing in the big games and battling with the best, was a great experience. I want to get more goals and become an even more important part of the team. I’m excited to see the fans back in the stadium next season, I’ll be working hard to make sure I’m at my best and to show them even more than I have.”

Bielsa will be buzzing

While Roberts hardly set the world alight at Elland Road last season – he managed just one goal and provided two assists – there’s no questioning that the Welshman became someone who Bielsa came to rely upon, particularly in the latter stages of the campaign.

From mid-February to early May, the 22-year-old started 12 consecutive games in the Premier League, and Bielsa himself was very open in his praise of the forward.

He said: “He has played many games in a row and has shown he has the resources to justify his starting position in the team. He has virtues that are very difficult to find in football at the moment. He has all the resources necessary to unbalance offensively and still has a lot to grow to make these attempts useful and efficient.”

The hope will be that now that he has signed a new long-term contract and his future at Elland Road is all settled, Roberts will be able to kick on and really realise his full potential next season.

But having made him an integral part of his first-team squad, Bielsa will be absolutely buzzing to see the Welshman commit his future to the club.

This news emerging from Thorp Arch is very exciting for Bielsa.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa must unleash this starlet next season…

Tigers prolong Klinger's agony on gloomy day for Victoria

For twenty years, Victoria has been on the wrong end of history in first-class matches in Hobart

John Polack03-Mar-2001For twenty years, Victoria has been on the wrong end of history in first-class matches in Hobart. Today, its present captain found himself carving a rather unfortunateplace for himself in the record books too with an astonishing declaration on day two of the Pura Cup match against Tasmania here at the Bellerive Oval.Never before in Australian first-class matches has a skipper effected an innings closure with one of his batsmen resting on a score of 99. But that all changed here.Even under a glorious expanse of blue sky, this was – in many ways – a gloomy day for Victoria. Captain Paul Reiffel tried to force a better outcome by closing theBushrangers’ first innings twenty-four minutes before lunch at 5/393 – even, amazingly, to the point of leaving twenty year old Michael Klinger an agonising one run shortof a maiden first-class century. In the urgent search for Pura Cup points and, more specifically, Victoria’s first outright win in this state since 1981, Reiffel felt that he couldn’t afford to waste anyfurther time prolonging the Bushrangers’ innings. He had always wanted at least four overs at the Tasmanian batsmen before lunch and was even undeterred by thefact that Klinger would have been back on strike at the start of a new over if the closure hadn’t been made.”It’s probably the toughest thing that I’ve ever had to do as captain,” said Reiffel after play.”It’s not nice and I didn’t want to do it. I would have loved to have seen him get a hundred. He really deserved it.””Unfortunately, the team comes first … he’s a team player playing a team game.”Reiffel stated that Klinger had been aware of the situation, had coped with the decision well and that he accepted that the team’s fortunes clearly assumedprecedence over those of any individual.Alas, the declaration came very much as a shock tactic to the small crowd watching on and subsequent events didn’t exactly vindicate the move. Reiffel’s bowlersand fieldsmen struggled throughout the afternoon, as the rejuvenated Dene Hills (74*) and Michael DiVenuto (63) joined with captain Jamie Cox (41) to steer theTigers toward a total of 2/202 in response.Hills and Cox made slightly scratchy starts and there was one strong caught behind appeal against the latter in the third over of the innings. But it wasn’t long beforethey were playing with assurance and doing so sufficiently attractively to register Tasmania’s highest opening partnership of the season. The former even found time tosurpass and then shatter his previous individual best score (of 28) of a generally wretched first-class summer. After Cox made one of his few mistakes and played back to a John Davison (1/56) off break that caught an outside edge and flew at comfortable catching height toMatthew Elliott at slip, DiVenuto was in full cry. The stylish left hander has been the target of approaches from other states of late and there is talk of a move nextseason. But, after he had battled for the first ten minutes of his innings to cast aside the poor form that has dogged his batting recently, he looked right at home andset about producing a series of typically flourishing attacking strokes.Even if Hills did not exactly bat with the same degree of flamboyance, the Tigers were well in command from almost the very moment at which their innings began. The visitors also came to be badly handicapped by the absence of all-rounder Ian Harvey, who will take no further part in the match after his right thumb was brokenduring the morning in the midst of an excellent, unbroken spell from the spirited Andrew Downton (4/95) at the River End. Reiffel’s declaration, accordingly, beganto assume increasingly cruel proportions. This is not to entirely belittle the veteran player’s actions, though. The Victorians’ plans were, in fact, revised as Klinger made his approach toward the potentiallandmark. Originally, eyes had been set on a closure exactly ninety minutes into the day but an allowance of two further overs was conceded as Klinger entered thenineties.Notwithstanding the quick departures of Jason Arnberger (173) and Harvey (12) to Downton’s bowling at the other end, Klinger had played in attacking fashionthroughout the morning and was scoring just as productively as at any other time as the fateful last over began. He glanced the fourth delivery to the right of afieldsman stationed on the deep square leg fence and looked inclined to return for a risky second run. But he was sent back by partner Darren Berry (12*), who wasthen unable to give the strike back to the youngster from the fifth ball.In the end, the circumstances conspired completely against Klinger. It was indeed close to the most galling of cricketing tragedies that the due reward of three figuresnever came.

Gers urged to sign Osayi-Samuel

According to Kevin Campbell, Bright Osayi-Samuel would do brilliantly at Glasgow Rangers were he to make the move to Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Osayi-Samuel to leave Fenerbahce

Osayi-Samuel made the move to Fenerbahce in Turkey from QPR in January, but it appears he may already be leaving the club.

Fener are looking to make £15m from player sales, and they are hoping to get £3m for Osayi-Samuel. He has been linked with a switch to Ibrox.

The Latest: Campbell urges Gers to sign winger

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell has urged the Gers to sign the 23-year-old. He said:

“I think he would be a good signing at £3million.

“He is a player who has been long-linked with Rangers. They have clearly been coveting him for a while.

“A player of that quality for £3million is cheap money. Even though the transfer market in Scotland is different, that is cheap. I think that is about right for a player with a lot still to come.

“He has got bags of pace, he is direct and he is a threat. I think he would do brilliantly in Scotland.”

The Verdict: Worth a punt

Since making the move to Turkey, things have not gone fantastically well for Osayi-Samuel. He has managed just one goal and one assist for the club in 19 appearances (Transfermarkt) and, given Fenerbahce are already considering moving him on, he clearly hasn’t made too big an impact.

However, as he showed with five goals and nine assists in the Championship during the 2019/20 campaign he has plenty of ability and can be a danger down the flank.

At 23 years of age, he has 19 goals throughout his senior career and has plenty of time to improve as well. For Steven Gerrard and co, he may just be worth a punt at a measly £3m.

In other news, Rangers have also been urged to sign this young Dutchman.

Eduardo Baptista confirma time para amistoso e mantém Dudu capitão

Pundit sends warning to Gers’ Helander

Glasgow Rangers’ Filip Helander has been urged to back up his words after the Sweden international said he had no plans to play in England.

The Lowdown: Interest from Premier League in Helander

Helander, who is currently representing his country at Euro 2020, has been linked with both Aston Villa and Leicester City in recent weeks (Aftonbladet).

However, the 28-year-old appeared to pour cold water on any suggestions he would leave the club by saying he has no plans to play south of the border (via The Daily Record).

The Latest: McAvennie sends strong warning

Speaking to Football Insider, Frank McAvennie has urged Helander to respect his word and stay at Ibrox. He said:

“It’s great to hear as a Rangers fan.

“Whether he means it or not, that’s the issue. We still have to see that.

“Until you’re sold, you are a Rangers player and it’s rare you get a player who talks about wanting to go.

“He’s got to prove what he means now and stay, otherwise he’ll look daft.”

The Verdict: Important

While Helander has been unable to show his full ability so far with the 55-time Scottish champions as he has struggled with injuries (Transfermarkt), he has had a big impact when he has featured.

After 29 Premiership appearances, he is yet to lose a single match, while he was an important member of a defence that conceded just 13 goals in the league last term (BBC).

The Gers are said to be looking for £6m if they are to sell Helander this summer. However, there appears to be no real need to move him on and, if he stays at Ibrox, he can continue to play a role as the Gers target a Champions League run next term.

McAvennie is right though, after coming out with such a strong statement, Helander would look silly if he did end up moving on and he must have had that in mind before making the comments, which suggests that he did mean what he said.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at this SPFL development.
