الجدير بالذكر أن النادي الأهلي سيواجه الزمالك يوم الإثنين القادم في إطار منافسات الجولة الحادية عشرة من منافسات بطولة دوري السوبر.

The Nigerian international has been one of Gerrard’s most impressive performers in the Premiership so far this season, having averaged a superb 7.4 rating across his 26 appearances, with six goals and four assists to his name.

However, he wasn’t anywhere near his best on Sunday and struggled to have much influence on the game, even when Gerrard pushed him further forward when Scott Arfield replaced Ianis Hagi in the second half.

As per SofaScore, the former Charlton Athletic man would earn a disappointing 6.6/10 rating for his display, which was the worst of any Rangers player who started the game.

Aribo really struggled to have any influence on the game whatsoever, as he managed no shots, no dribbles and no key passes during his time on the pitch.

Considering he has averaged 1.6 shots, 1.9 dribbles and 1.3 key passes per game in the Premiership so far this season, it is definitely fair to suggest that he was very underwhelming on Sunday, which will surely frustrate Gerrard, as he is reliant on the Nigerian to be the creative force in his midfield.

The 24-year-old also failed to complete a single long ball or cross in his 77 minutes on the pitch, so it was no surprise to see him axed in favour of Scott Wright as Rangers chased a winning goal.

Although he may well have been tired following the Europa League game in midweek, there is no denying that this performance was far from Aribo’s usual standard, and with their rivals there for the taking, Gerrard may well be fuming that one of his chief creators failed to really turn up.

Aston Villa must seize their perfect chance to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months have linked Dean Smith’s side with a move for the Frenchman, and now there has been a major update on his long-term future at Celtic Park.

Eurosport claim that “Edouard is being touted to clubs across England ahead of a potential summer transfer but there seems to be little concrete interest.”

It’s added that a deal to land the striker would be around the £20m mark, and while “it had been expected that there would be a tussle to sign him…at this stage that does not seem to be the case”.

Dean Smith will be buzzing

In Edouard, Villa would land themselves someone who’s been incredibly prolific in his fledgeling career. As well as bagging 20 goals in just 34 games this season – and that too for a Celtic side in turmoil and way off the pace behind Rangers – he’s scored 82 goals in 179 senior games in total.

His former boss at Celtic, Neil Lennon, has raved about the kind of importance he holds at Celtic Park, showering him with praise after one real stand-out display against Ross County.

He said: “He’s hugely important (to us), he’s an outstanding footballer, talismanic almost, he’s so talented, so cool and he had two great finishes. He’s up there with some of the best we’ve had over the last 20 odd years.”

Given Villa have been so heavily reliant on Ollie Watkins up top – he’s played in every single Premier League game thus far this season – bringing in Edouard would lift a massive burden off the striker’s shoulders.

With the suggestion that teams aren’t falling over themselves just yet to sign Edouard, it’s all perfectly set up for Villa to have a clear run at the Frenchman and get a deal done.

And landing him this summer would surely have Smith buzzing at having another top-quality striker in his ranks.

Já Gabriel Vasconcelos voltou ao Corinthians nas últimas semanas. O garoto de 20 anos estava emprestado ao Joinville para a disputa da Série B do Campeonato Brasileiro, mas foi dispensado junto com outros nove jogadores.

Gabriel foi promovido ao elenco profissional alvinegro após o vice da Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior neste ano. Sem espaço no grupo principal, foi emprestado ao América-RJ para a disputa do Campeonato Carioca e marcou dois gols em nove partidas. Em seguida, foi repassado ao Joinville e atuou em apenas seis partidas da Série B. Ele não conseguiu repetir o sucesso que teve na base do Corinthians, onde marcou oito gols na Copinha de 2015 e mais cinco no torneio desta temporada.

O jovem e outros atletas da base devem ter espaço no elenco principal de Cristóvão Borges, que conta somente com 29 jogadores no grupo. A ideia é dar chances a alguns garotos que se destacaram no Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20, no qual o Timão está na final contra o Botafogo.

– Existe a possibilidade (de promover jogadores). Conheço muito cada atleta que o Osmar Loss (técnico do sub-20) tem colocado no elenco, acompanhei toda a preparação deles desde janeiro. O Osmar trabalha com um dos elencos mais jovens desde que ele chegou ao Corinthians, não imaginava bons resultados agora, até pela pouca idade deles. Mas são atletas com muito tempo de casa, selecionáveis, que já estiveram conosco aqui no profissional. Temos uma expectativa muito grande pela evolução deles, que têm feito um grande Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20, contam com o artilheiro, que é o Carlinhos, o Rodrigo Figueiredo, que é um meia em evolução… – disse o gerente de futebol do Corinthians, Alessandro Nunes, no último domingo.

– Depois da competição vamos sentar e reavaliar quem pode incorporar o plantel, mas a possibilidade é grande – completou.

Spezia Calcio’s Technical Director Mauro Meluso dealt Newcastle United a huge blow in relation to their rumoured interest in M’Bala Nzola over the weekend, when he told Citta Della Spezia what it would take to sign the Angola international.

Steve Bruce can forget any hopes of acquiring the Serie A star after the Toon reportedly agreed to hand Dwight Gayle a new three-year contract, to avoid the 31-year-old leaving St. James’ Park as a free agent this summer.

Gayle’s current £40,000-per-week deal was due to expire in June and the forward had been linked with Galatasaray as well as clubs in the Middle East, Europe and Major League Soccer, though is now expected to pen new terms with a lesser salary.

Newcastle opting to keep the £4.5m-rated attacker on Tyneside for another three seasons is likely a sign to the club’s financial outlook ahead of the summer market, with funds expected to be tight.

Yet United’s decision to tie Gayle down through to the summer of 2024 has been questioned, with former Leeds striker Noel Whelan left stunned.

“I’m shocked to hear he’s been given a new deal, because I do not think Steve Bruce will be there until the end of the year,” he told Football Insider. “Newcastle are deep in a relegation battle so to hand out contracts now, when everything is up in the air, I find that pretty bewildering.

“It is not as if he has been given much game time. How can you hand out a three-year contract to a player who has barely played, under a manager who might not be there? They might need that money to sign better players in the summer. It is really strange.”

Gayle has scored once in 11 Premier League appearances after a delayed start to his season due to a medial collateral ligament injury, with the London-born frontman’s only strike to date coming in his first outing against West Bromwich Albion in December.

Bruce has also only fielded Gayle in the starting line-up on two occasions, and – as Whelan notes – retaining the 31-year-old could now impact Newcastle’s activity in the transfer market when better options may be available.

Nzola emerged as a potential option for Newcastle to target during the winter market, with reports by Club Dorla 46 and Calciomercato citing the Magpies and West Ham as leading candidates for the AC Milan and SSC Napoli target.

Spezia were reluctant to part with the Angola international at the time and managed to fend off all approaches, and have since seen the 24-year-old take his tally for the term to nine goals in 18 Serie A appearances.

Newcastle could potentially look to revive their interest at the end of the season, but any hopes of getting a deal done now appear dead in the water with Gayle in line for a new contract and with Spezia chief Meluso setting a high asking price.

“His market value? I have a number in my head, but it is difficult to say today,” he told Citta Della Spezia. “The price makes the question. But what I have in my head is very high.

“But the salvation of this season is of great importance on everything, the club’s assets depend on this. If we were to save ourselves, the players would have a greater value and they know it, they are aware of it.”

Spezia sit 15th in the Serie A table and seven points clear of the relegation zone coming out of the international break, thanks heavily to Nzola’s team-high return of goals. His strikes have directly influenced results against Cagliari Calcio, Bologna FC 1909, Napoli and UC Sampdoria.

Newcastle could yet revive their interest in the forward, described by his former coach Nicola Antonio Calabro as “very strong”, but the chances of getting would appear slim, especially given the financial commintent they look set to make to Gayle.
