According to Football Insider, West Bromwich Albion youth prospect Jovan Malcolm is wanted by Premier League leaders Liverpool.

But it appears as if a pattern is emerging at the Hawthorns, which probably spells more bad things than good in terms of their long-term future.

What’s the word?

The Baggies’ U18 striker netted four past the Champions League finalists last week as they won 6-3, a game in which Rico Richards featured in before also being linked with a move to the top-flight, per The Sun.

It appears that Liverpool were impressed with what they saw while the same report suggests that other Premier League clubs hold some interest.

Football Insider also claim that Malcolm’s future in the west Midlands is now in doubt despite only being 16 years of age.

Trend emerging

Albion have an impressive reputation for producing emerging talents, but rarely have they been able to keep hold of them.

In the summer, promising striker Louie Barry rejected a contract to sign for La Liga giants Barcelona, and West Brom were powerless in stopping Morgan Rogers join Manchester City for £4m.

They did manage to keep hold of Rekeem Harper despite interest from Juventus and Liverpool, but that decision appears to be a mistake considering he has only managed six minutes in the league all season.

As mentioned above, they risk losing Richards and even Nathan Ferguson, who broke into first-team stardom this campaign.

His performances under Slaven Bilic have warranted interest from some elite names in Europe, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, they’ll be sweating over whether or not they can keep hold of the versatile defender.

Luke Dowling has claimed in the past that the club’s academy is ‘enviable’ and he isn’t far off being wrong, but over the past year, it’s quickly become a talent conveyor belt for other teams to pluck from rather than an opportunity to build from within.

If it continues at this rate, the Baggies are likely flirting with their future ability to develop their own.

أعلن المدرب الألماني، يورجن كلوب، المدير الفني لنادي ليفربول، تشكيل فريقه الرسمي، لمباراة ساوثهامبتون في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

ليفربول يستقبل ساوثهامبتون، على ملعب “آنفيلد”، في تمام الساعة التاسعة والربع بتوقيت القاهرة، ضمن لقاءات الجولة الخامسة والثلاثين من البريميرليج.

Sheffield Wednesday return to league action this weekend, and those involved with the club will be hoping that they have learned a thing or two over the international break.

The Owls were left reeling in several matches before the two-week league hiatus kicked in as game management has cost them an array of points.

Too often lately have Garry Monk’s side let slip of a potential victory or even that crucial away point, so hopefully, signs of that being put right will occur against Championship-leading West Brom this weekend.

However, one of their major issues this season doesn’t necessarily have a quick or easy fix – goalscoring.

Top goalscorer Steven Fletcher is currently enduring a barren run of six games without a goal, and under the 40-year-old, the side have bagged just 14 goals from ten matches, four of which coming in one fixture alone.

But one of Wednesday’s reported targets continues to display why he could be a potential solution, and one that doesn’t necessarily have to lead the line.

Per TEAMtalk at the start of the month, the Owls were leading the chase for Crawley Town striker Bez Lubala after his impressive start to the season in League Two.

The 21-year-old has continued to prove that he is a goal threat, even when playing from a wide position, as he has bagged eight goals in 17 appearances this campaign.

Lubala was handed his first senior debut by Monk when the pair were together at Birmingham City, so that only adds fuel to the fire, but it is a move that makes a ton of sense outside of that factor alone.

The goal-laden ace has primarily been deployed as a left-winger in Gabriele Cioffi’s system, and it has paid serious dividends.

Lubala is averaging a massive 4.4 shots per game, which far exceeds Wednesday’s best as Fletcher is averaging 2.7 per game while Kadeem Harris, who has played on the left this campaign, has managed just 1.6 per match, via WhoScored.

He also averages 1.9 dribbles, 1.9 key passes, and 1.2 crosses a game, which only goes to show he can offer multiple qualities – the sort that can help Monk resolve his goalscoring crisis.

That’s both in a team player sense, as his numbers for passes and crosses show, and as a threat in front of goal.

The 40-year-old knows the player well enough from the Blues, and the fact that he can play on the wing or as a striker should have the Owls chief pleading at Dejphon Chansiri’s door this January.

West Ham United came close to signing Barcelona wonderkid Ansu Fati during the summer, as reported by Bleacher Report.

What’s the story?

The 17-year-old has made 4 starts and 6 substitute appearances for Barcelona across La Liga and the Champions League this season, scoring 2 goals and getting 1 assist.

He has been a revelation despite this short period of time in the team, even being nominated for the Golden Boy award for 2019.

However, things could have been very different for him as he didn’t see a route into the Barcelona first-team at the beginning of the summer.

This led to various clubs showing an interest in signing him, with West Ham among them and the Hammers even managed to strike up a deal with his family.

The Catalan giants were helpless in this because Fati had not signed a new contract, but an issue with the youngster getting a Spanish passport eventually allowed Barcelona to step in and prevent the deal from happening.

Ambitious targets

West Ham have a history of making ambitious transfer attempts under the stewardship of David Gold and Sullivan.

Perhaps the most high profile of these targets came at the beginning of their tenure, as in 2010, the year they took over, West Ham made a £16m move for Neymar, then at Santos, as reported by The Daily Mail at the time.

However, the Brazilian side were unwilling to let the then-18-year-old leave for anything less than his £28.4m release clause.

It can be argued that their move in 2012 was even more outrageous, as they attempted to sign Fernando Torres and Carlos Tevez on loan from Chelsea and Manchester City respectively, while in the Championship.

Speaking to West Ham Till I Die, via The Daily Mail, David Sullivan admitted: “We tried to get Torres from Chelsea.

“If he couldn’t score in the Premier League, he could come along with us for a month, we might fire him up. They just said, “Not at this moment in time”.”

He then followed that up by speaking about Tevez: “Three times we asked. Three times they said, “No chance”.”

The West Ham owners’ ambitions don’t stop on the pitch though, as they also made an attempt to recruit Carlo Ancelotti in 2015, as reported by The Telegraph.

Fati may not be on par with these names yet, but the fact that he is already making waves at Barcelona indicates that he deserves a place on the growing list of ambitious transfer targets the Hammers have missed out on.

Perhaps next time Gold & Sullivan’s ambition will translate to a genuine transfer coup.

According to Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard on talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel, and Jose Mourinho must bring him to north London.

What’s the word, then?

Well, speaking on talkSPORT Hatchard revealed that he’d heard that Spurs are watching the Gelsenkirchen-based club’s captain, who has a “Neuer vibe about him”.

As things stand both Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris are injured with Paulo Gazzaniga filling in between the sticks, but with the former duo getting no younger it wouldn’t be too surprising if Spurs decided to look for a potential new number one sooner rather than later.

Indeed, according to Football Insider Lloris fears that he could be one of the casualties of the Mourinho era, and we said that we believe he is right to be worried.

Nubel a good target?

He certainly looks like he is.

The fact that the 6 foot 4 colossus only recently turned 23 years of age and is the captain of the Bundesliga club speaks volumes – especially as a goalkeeper.

Of course he could follow in Lloris’ footsteps in that regard, but Tottenham would benefit from having another leader in their ranks as they look to achieve their big aims.

It isn’t only the fact he is their skipper which is impressive either, considering he has also been compared to Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer.

That is high praise indeed given the 33-year-old has won everything – the World Cup, the Champions League and countless Bundesliga titles, as well as individual honours.

In addition, given some of Lloris’ mistakes over the course of the last year or so and the fact he doesn’t seem overly confident with the ball at his feet – as shown in September when he dawdled on the ball and gifted Southampton’s Danny Ings a goal – the addition of Nubel could be a God-send, either to provide competition for Gazzaniga or overtake him should the France international be cast aside.

The German has even been described as having “extraordinary footballing ability” by Klaus Thomforde, Germany’s U21 goalkeeper coach, via Bundesliga.com, which suggests he still has a massive future ahead of him.

At 23 years of age that is certainly the case, and Tottenham must look to boost their goalkeeping options by bringing him to the club.

It seems as though Everton have a particular lure to South America at the moment.

On the chalkboard

Everton clearly need more goals in January so it’s unsurprising that they’d be in the market for an extra forward.

Borre, who is currently aged 24, certainly fits the bill as someone who could lend them an extra hand. He’s scored seven times in the Superliga this season while also picking up a solitary assist.

That comes in just 11 games and is a tally that passes each and every one of the current playing staff at Goodison.

Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have three each but Cenk Tosun has just one to his name. However, it is the former Juventus man Moise Kean who should be left to fear the most if the Colombian arrives.

The young striker has already been disciplined this season for arriving late to a team meeting twice and although he’s only been in Merseyside for a matter of months, he’s been treated in a rather bizarre way.

Despite Everton’s goalscoring woes, he’s remained on the bench and has started just two Premier League outings.

If he’s already struggling for regular opportunities now, the addition of another forward would be incredibly detrimental for Kean.

The 19-year-old’s mother was told he was going to be looked after when he joined but from a playing perspective that definitely hasn’t been the case.

Amassing just 288 minutes in the top-flight, he’s yet to score for the Toffees and there is already pressure mounting on a man who arrived from one of the giants of Italian football.

There is plenty of potential for him to grow but that may not be realised if he’s bumped further down the pecking order.

Landing extra firepower in Borre would be smart, but Everton must be wary at the same time.
