It has been some time since Alex Iwobi decided to join Everton from Arsenal, officially agreeing on a five-year deal that will keep him as one of the Toffees until at least June 2024.

According to The Mirror, Alexis Sanchez rejected the chance to join Roma this summer, even despite Manchester United agreeing to pay a large sum of his wages as the exit was sanctioned.

What’s the word?

Sanchez moving from Arsenal to Man United was always going to be a fascinating transfer. Very much like Robin van Persie, it was a deal that would send shockwaves through Islington.

However, it hasn’t gone to plan whatsoever with the Chilean severely struggling in the north-west.

Since arriving he’s scored just one Premier League goal, failing to live up to the high standards he set at the Gunners.

Yet, a move to Roma has fallen through after he rejected the chance to join them. The Mirror claim that United were willing to pay a large sum of his £560k-a-week wages after they agreed terms for a loan with an option to buy.

Deep-rooted issues for United

The fact that United are considering paying some of Sanchez’s wages in order for him to leave is almost barbaric and sums up just how wrong they have got things with him and their squad.

In signing players like Sanchez and Paul Pogba, it seemed a mere statement of intent and an attempt to stamp down their authority.

On the face of it, the former should have been someone capable of taking them to the next level, scoring 24 league goals in 2016/17.

United were prepared to pay him big wages but the fact he’s even on the pay packet he is is alarming.

After all, the Red Devils have a number of individuals on high wages which ultimately, underline a deep-rooted issue within the club.

Per Spotrac, there are eight members of their squad on wages of above £150k. The glaring gap between the highest earners and those below them shows the division within the squad and provides evidence of how they’ve fallen.

This is a side who has focused on landing some of the best talents around, proven by acquiring Harry Maguire for £80m.

But in doing big business, it has rather blown open their wage structure, something which is now causing them an issue if they’re willing to pay some of Sanchez’s wages even if he leaves.

Perhaps going forward, they should hand large amounts to those who actually warrant it.

Arsenal may not be able to bring in any defensive recruits but they could see one of their defenders leave before the European transfer market closes.

The man in question happens to be Nacho Monreal who according to various sources could be on the move.

Marco Sande of COPE reported the possibility a couple of days ago before Marca followed the story up by saying he could move to Real Sociedad.

However, it was a piece of news that left many Arsenal fans rather baffled on Twitter as they reacted to the events that were playing out.

One said they couldn’t understand the move because of concerns over Kieran Tierney’s fitness. The left back is currently out with a groin issue and isn’t due back until October.

Another said it would be a very risky transfer because it would only leave one man in Sead Kolasinac fit enough to play in that role.

A further fan labelled it as a big mistake.

Monreal has played in all three of Arsenal’s Premier League matches so far but is only managing an average rating of 6.62 per WhoScored.

The Sun have linked Tony Pulis to the club this week whilst Alan Biggs, of the Athletic, has named Danny Cowley as the only other manager the club have ‘seriously considered.’

Pulis is without a club following his departure from fellow Championship side Middlesborough back in May and Cowley is currently in charge of Lincoln.

Pursue at all costs

The hierarchy at Wednesday must do everything in their power, no matter how unlikely it is, to pursue the 40-year-old whose career trajectory has risen substantially in such a short space of time.

He may not bring Championship-level managerial experience, but he has proven his worth at every challenge thrown at him to date.

Beginning in non-league, he oversaw the Imps’ return to the Football League whilst also knocking out Ipswich Town, Brighton and Burnley in a historic FA Cup run which saw them reach the quarter-finals.

Cowley then guided the club to the EFL Trophy in their very first season back in League Two before earning promotion to League One the following year as champions.

Any doubts over whether this was a step too far have been quickly put to bed as Lincoln are currently sitting second in the table.

Now, the 40-year-old may not want to leave Sincil Bank anytime soon as his remarkable journey at the club appears to be far from complete, but there’s no harm in Wednesday throwing everything they can at him, just in case something could sway his mind.

According to The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas, Newcastle’s summer interest in Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen was genuine, and the youngster fits the profile of what the Magpies are looking for.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent months had suggested Newcastle were keeping tabs on the 22-year-old and had scouts watching Hull’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Amiens in July.

Now, in a Newcastle Q&A on The Chronicle, Douglas has delivered his verdict on whether the Magpies are indeed interested in the winger.

He said: “They like Bowen and Steve Nickson’s scouting team have watched him a few times. Their interest in Bowen in the summer was genuine – although I do recall Steve Bruce playing down any imminent bid in the rain at Preston.

“They simply wouldn’t meet Hull’s asking price – but in January, with six months left on his deal, will the Tigers cut that £20million tag? That’s on them but Newcastle’s plan is to start bringing in younger, up-and-coming talent and he ticks every box.”

Goal-scoring boost

Despite playing 43 of his 46 games as a right-winger, Bowen showed his remarkable goal-scoring touch with 22 strikes in the Championship last term.

The Tigers winger had a real purple patch of form in the middle of the campaign, with 14 goals in 16 games between December 22 and March 16. The traditional drop-off in form that’s accustomed with English football in the winter months didn’t seem to register with Bowen, and he was a major reason behind Hull’s consistent form.

Such were his impressive showings, the 22-year-old cleaned up at the end of season awards for the club, and earned himself a place in the EFL Team of the Season. Bringing him in January would give Newcastle a goal-scoring option out wide, and relieve some of the pressure on summer signing Joelinton to fire the Magpies to victory week-in and week-out.

And if anyone thought he is a one-season wonder, then his start to the current campaign has certainly silenced those claims. Bowen has rifled in four goals in six appearances for the Championship side, and has significantly improved his averages in both shots and dribbles per game from last season. A January swoop seems like such a no-brainer.
