According to reports, Middlesbrough have shown an interest in hiring Slavisa Jokanovic as Tony Pulis’ successor.

In terms of Championship managers there probably couldn’t be two more polar opposites, so what should Boro fans expect from the Serbian if he is appointed?

The bad

Even though Jokanovic has been promoted with both Watford and Fulham, he comes with his fair share of downsides.

If Steve Gibson is expecting immediate results from his new manager, he should look elsewhere. The former Watford manager’s teams are notoriously slow starters as it takes time for his personnel to adjust to his system, and when taking over a squad that was managed by Tony Pulis last season, this process could take even longer.

Jokanovic can also be a stubborn man, he has often been accused of not having a plan B, and if the board don’t bring in the signings he wants he is more than happy to highlight which areas need strengthening in his team selections.

At Fulham, he infamously played Stefan Johansen as a striker to highlight that the Whites needed a new forward. Eventually, this led to the loan signing of Aleksandar Mitrovic, but during the period the Norwegian was playing up top the west Londoners dropped valuable points which could have cost them promotion.

To say that Slavisa is the antithesis of Pulis isn’t wholly a good thing. His ability to organise a defence leaves a lot to be desired as shown by his tenure in the Premier League with his former team.

The good

Firstly, Jokanovic will bring something that Middlesbrough haven’t seen for years, entertaining football. Aitor Karanka, Garry Monk, Gary Rowett and Pulis have all been defensively-minded managers whereas the Serbian loves to attack.

His teams dominate possession and move the ball quickly — a system which has proven effective as he has overseen two promotions from the Championship.

Although he can be stubborn about getting the right people in, once everything is in place, his teams can prove almost unbeatable in this division. Fulham went on a 23-game run without losing in the second half of 2017/18 following the arrivals of Mitrovic and Matt Targett.

He is also seemingly good at handling any tough characters in the dressing room. The aforementioned Mitrovic has had a plethora of occurrences of ill-discipline on the pitch, but Jokanovic completely transformed him so that he could control that side of his game.

Aboubakar Kamara has shown this season that he is a livewire who can cause problems, but under the tutelage of the former Chelsea player, these issues never cropped up.

This skill could come in handy with Martin Braithwaite and Britt Assombalonga in the Boro squad, as they are two players with immense talent who seem to allow their attitude to affect their game.

All in all, he is one of the best managers in the division, but he probably couldn’t pick a harder side to take over. Half a decade of defensive football is ingrained into several players in this squad.

If the board at The Riverside Stadium are serious about the 50-year-old being the man to take them up, they will have to give him their full backing and plenty of patience.

Arsenal would have already known how tough life after Aaron Ramsey would be, however, their shocking performance in the Europa League final only further highlighted how missed he will be.

Unai Emery will have a huge task on his hands in trying to find a player that will be able to replace him and make him a distant memory – a job that nobody will envy as it is going to be that difficult to achieve.

However, the Gunners may have been watching one man that could be the perfect candidate in making Ramsey’s departure a little easier to swallow.

According to a report by South American publication TNT Sports, Arsenal have sent scouts to watch three men in action: Exequiel Palacios of River Plate and Nahitan Nández and Emanuel Reynoso of Boca Juniors.

And, it is Nández that you would have to feel would be best suited to fill the void that Ramsey will leave in the middle of the field.

As a Uruguay international, he will have already formed a partnership of some sort with Lucas Torreira in the middle of the field which could, therefore, benefit Arsenal as well whilst he has all the qualities of doing everything that the Welshman did at the Emirates Stadium.

The 23-year-old is a box-to-box type of player that would certainly provide the Gunners with some additional tenacity in the middle of the park. He makes lung-busting runs in the penalty box to provide his team-mates with options, whilst he is equally adept at playing out on the right-hand side.

He can dictate the tempo of the game whilst in possession, whilst he can press very quickly to try and win the ball back from their opponents, allowing him to work in tandem with Torreira.

Having both Uruguayans in the middle of the park, Emery’s Arsenal side would be instantly stronger in front of the defence, whilst they would also carry the same sort of attacking threat that the tireless Ramsey once offered them as well.

In an interview with French website Festival Foot Espoirs, Aston Villa recruiter Olivier Monterrubio has laid down hints over where the club may find another player with Tammy Abraham’s qualities this summer.

What’s the word?

Abraham was sensational for the Villans in 2018/19, scoring 26 goals as he helped his loan side back to the Premier League.

The Chelsea man had struggled in the top-flight with Swansea but after returning to the Championship, he found the back of the net on a regular basis.

He was crucial to their promotion charge but it remains to be seen whether he’ll return to the club. Considering Chelsea are under a transfer embargo it could be hard to prise him away on a permanent basis.

Villa scout Monterubbio, who was employed by the club last season, has been keeping a close eye on players in France and was important in bringing Frederic Guilbert to the Midlands.

When questioned about whether he’s trying to find someone like Abraham at the prestigious Toulon tournament, a competition he’s now scouting, he told Festival Foot Espoirs:

“Yes. There are also several other posts to find. For the moment, I’m looking at all the numbers and then I’ll sort on the second and third day.”

Between the lines

It’s been difficult to work out Dean Smith’s transfer policy since achieving promotion given the sheer volume of players that seem to have been targeted.

Outfield players Joe Lolley, Neal Maupay and Gary Cahill could all join, whilst Neil Etheridge has also been the subject of interest.

However, reading between the lines of what Monterubbio has said, it’s clear that Villa are still after players they can develop following comments made by the manager in January.

The Toulon tournament has been highly regarded for a while now and is used as a platform for some of the best young players around to display their talents.

It’s intriguing to note that the Frenchman could be trying to find a player in the mould of Villa’s star striker from last term, but being able to actually discover someone as talented as that could be a challenge.

Monterubbio looks as though he’s already done some encouraging work in France but if he can find someone to match Abraham or mimic his profile in terms of ability and further potential, it would surely represent his finest discovery to date.

وتشير التقارير إلى إمكانية إيقاف كافاني لمدة ثلاث مباريات (لمطالعة التفاصيل من هنا).

ومن جانبه، قال تروي ديني في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “إندبندنت” الإنجليزية: “ما حدث هو موقف غير صحيح أبدًا، بغض النظر عن الطريقة التي تنظر بها إلى الأمر، عندما تكتب رسالة ما، فإنه من المفترض إنه تسع مرات من أصل 10 ستقوم بمراجعة ما تكتبه قبل نشره لأنك لا تريد أن تبدو غبيًا”.

وأضاف: “أتفهم إنه توجد العقوبة لمدة ثلاث مباريات، ولكن يجب على الاتحاد الإنجليزي التأكد من فكرة أن اللاعبين الذين يأتون إلى هذا البلد يدركون معنى كل لفظ، لا أعتقد أن كافاني يتعمد إهانة أي شخص، ولكنه يحتاج إلى تعلم ما هو مقبول وغير مقبول”.

ولدى سؤاله عما إذا كان الإيقاف ثلاث مباريات مناسبًا، قال ديني: “لا، لا أعتقد ذلك، لقد نشر ما نشره بشكل مدروس، لقد كتب ذلك، وفكر فيه، وكان لديه أشخاص من حوله يقولون له (لا أعتقد أنه يجب عليك فعل ذلك حقًا)، من المحتمل أنه تصرف بهذا الشكل في لحظة من السعادة، بعد تسجيله في المباراة، ولهذا السبب لا أعتبرها إهانة مقصودة، فهو لم يفهم تداعيات كلماته”.

واستكمل: “أعتقد في بعض الأحيان أن الإيقاف ثلاث مباريات ليس كافيًا، يجب أن يكون هناك كذلك مع تلك العقوبة فكرة تعليم اللاعبين، أن يكون هناك فهم بأن هذه الكلمات تؤذي الناس، ومعرفة سبب شعور الناس بالأذى من ذلك”.

وكانت كلمة “نيغريتو” هي ذاتها التي استخدمها لويس سواريز عندما كان لاعبًا مع ليفربول ضد باتريس إيفرا، وتوقف الأوروجواني 8 مباريات في عام 2011، ورفضت إحدى لجان الاتحاد الإنجليزي ادعاء سواريز بأنها عبارة عادية في ثقافته، وذلك نظرًا لسياق الحوار الساخن بين الثنائي في مباراة ليفربول ومانشستر يونايتد آنذاك.

واختتم ديني: “سأكون مهتمًا جدًا برؤية ما سيقوله إيفرا عن موقف كافاني”.

After three years away from the big time, Aston Villa are back amongst England’s elite in the Premier League, and there is already much excitement about their return.

One of the original members of the English top-flight during its reformation, Villa are a side many a neutral have a soft spot for, but heading back into the Premier League in a division where money now does all the talking, Dean Smith will have his work cut out next season if he is to keep his side up.

So what are the key fixtures for Villa looking ahead to next season, and what games will decide whether they can clinch survival?

October 5th – Norwich City (A)

If Villa are to stay up in the Premier League in their comeback year they need to ensure that they can get results over those who will also be fighting for survival, and Norwich City fall into that category. Picking up a win away at Carrow Road will be huge for the Birmingham-based club, besting last season’s Championship champions.

December 7th – Leicester City (H)

A win at home to Leicester City might seem like a tall task, but if Smith can orchestrate a win against the Foxes in a month where Villa play Sheffield United, Southampton and Norwich again, it could be the catalyst that leads to a run of wins that will be vital for the club’s Premier League safety.

February 29th – Sheffield United (H)

Speaking of Sheffield United, doing the double over Chris Wilder’s side would be a vital six points for Villa if they are to achieve Premier League status for the foreseeable future. Not only will it be important points gained for Smith and co, it will be points lost for the Blades.

April 4th – Wolverhampton Wanderers (H)

Rivalries are one of the defining elements of football that make the sport what it is, and a return to the Premier League for Villa means that their rivalry with Wolverhampton Wanderers can kick start yet again in a new era. Smith’s side will have to be on their A-game not just to bask in regional glory, but to get three important points that can help the Villans to safety. Based on last season’s form it’s a big ask, but Wolves often struggled against the teams near the bottom and they now have Europa League football to contend with as well.

May 9th – Arsenal (H)

Getting a result over a top-six side might seem like a tall order for Villa, but if there’s one side team you can always count on to bottle it away from home towards the end of the season, it’s Arsenal. If the pressure is on for the Gunners as we approach the home stretch it could be an end of season party for the Villans at Villa Park.
