Manchester United: Fans react to latest David De Gea transfer update

Manchester United are potentially looking at selling David De Gea in the summer and are weighing up Dean Henderson as a possible replacement, via Goal. Naturally, this has caused a divide amongst the Red Devils fan base, with some arguing it’s time for the erratic goalkeeper to leave the club, whilst others insist De Gea is still the right man for the job.

The Spaniard has committed several high profile blunders this season, including the latest mistake against Everton last weekend which was very similar to the infamous mistake made by Liverpool flop Loris Karius during the 2018 Champions League final. According to the official Premier League website, De Gea has made 3 errors leading to goals, saved 72 shots and kept only 7 clean sheets in 28 appearances.

United academy product Henderson is currently on loan to Sheffield United and is enjoying a stellar first season in the Premier League. The 22-year-old has made 26 appearances for The Blades, making 66 saves and keeping 9 clean sheets (Premier League).

De Gea signed a new contract back in September 2019, reportedly worth £375,000 a week and keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2023 (via SportRAC). The Spanish international will undoubtedly demand high wages given his professional record and it remains to be seen whether any club will be able to foot the bill.

Plenty of Red Devils fans have waded into the debate and here are just some of the best reactions…

Clinton Morrison attacks Spurs manager for key decision

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has come under fire from former Premier League striker and Spurs fan Clinton Morrison on talkSPORT this week.

What’s he said?

The north London side crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening, meaning their sole now turns to the Premier League where they are some seven points off the top four.

Mourinho made a surprising remark post-game suggesting that RB Leipzig’s entire bench would get into his starting lineup, which is why Morrison slammed his man-management skills on the radiowaves.

He pondered how the likes of Lucas Moura and Dele Alli would feel knowing that and also referenced previous comments slamming club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Morrison said:

“You don’t come out and publicly crucify any of your players, it’s not good enough. He did it at Chelsea, he did it at Man Utd and eventually, he will lose the dressing room [at Spurs] because players are bigger now. I believe players are bigger than football clubs, in that dressing room they are tight-knit together.”

Clinton Morrison on talkSPORT’s White and Sawyer.

Crisis point

Spurs’ season is surpassing boiling point now as any chance of silverware is dead in the dust following Tuesday night’s emphatic defeat.

In fact, the Bundesliga outfit were resounding winners across two legs, notching up a 4-0 victory on aggregate, which only goes to show the level of work Mourinho has to do at the club.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

There’s a strong possibility that the side will not be back in the Champions League for the foreseeable future, so the 57-year-old will need to build a squad in the summer – on an even more reduced budget – that can contend to achieve that accolade once again.

Daniel Levy is not one to splash the cash.

However, he may need to start by taking a look at himself just as Morrison suggests as his man-management skills are poor and ultimately, it led to his downfall at their top-flight rivals, Chelsea and Manchester United.

When a team is stuck in a rut, they need real inspiration, not snide digs like the Portuguese chief has opted for in recent weeks.

Leeds United: Joe Urquhart says defence is protecting Meslier

Joe Urquhart joined the Inside Elland Road podcast and discussed Leeds United’s game against Huddersfield Town before the league had to be suspended due to recent developments.

The Whites are still at the very peak of the mountain over in the Championship as supporters wait for clarification as to what will happen to the current campaign next.

Still, Urquhart remarked that Leeds’ defence made Illan Meslier’s jump into the senior squad that much easier by doing all the hard work and not letting the opposition get any real chances against them.

Here’s what he said on the Inside Elland Road podcast (13/3/2020): “He had absolutely nothing else to do and the week before he had absolutely nothing else to do, he poked a few crosses out, almost like the defence is just sort of woken up again and realised, you know, we need to protect the goalkeeper.”

The young goalie has been between the posts for Leeds for a total of three games, two of which were played in the Championship and both ended with victories and a clean sheet for the 20-year-old lad.

Urquhart believes that is simply due to the fact his defence is working extra hard to make sure he isn’t put into an awkward position and this is making his transition to the senior team that much smoother.

Whatever they are doing, it seems to be working but either way, they will have to wait for a bit longer to step onto the pitch once again.

Leeds fans, what have you made of Meslier’s recent displays? Are you confident he’s good enough to feature regularly? Let us know down in the comments below!

Ex-Celtic player Chris Sutton holds Larsson in high esteem

People across the country are now confined to their homes but with social media to turn to there is always a source of entertainment for players, pundits and fans to get involved with. The #toiletpaperchallenge is one form and an online FIFA 20 tournament has also captured the imaginations of clubs, while some people are now naming the four players who mean most to them.Fans have naturally used the opportunity to wax lyrical about players they grew up watching, and former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has jumped at the opportunity to list his favourite four.Perhaps unsurprisingly, he has mentioned his former partner in crime Henrik Larsson, a player who is likely top of every Celtic supporter’s list.

The pair were deadly up-front for Celtic and played a vital role in the Bhoys not only enjoying domestic success, but also reaching the UEFA Cup final, a game which the Swede scored twice in.

They were prolific that season but it was the year after where they both excelled. Sutton managed a hugely impressive return of 28 goals in 44 games, yet he was eclipsed by Larsson, who scored an astonishing 41 goals in 58 games.

It is interesting that another brilliant former partner of Sutton’s, Alan Shearer, doesn’t appear on his list, and perhaps indicates that the pundit thinks Larsson is the better of the two.

Meanwhile, a Barcelona star had something very interesting to say about Celtic recently…

Liverpool fans want to sign Timo Werner & Houssem Aouar

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been discussing players from across Europe who they want to see arrive at Anfield.

Indeed, in the absence of regular football attentions have been turning towards potential transfers, and it appears that plenty of supporters admire two players in particular.

A fan account recently asked the Reds faithful to name one player they’d sign from Ligue 1, Serie A, the Bundesliga, La Liga, the Premier League and the Championship.

Naturally, a whole host of star names from across the continent were mentioned, but there were two that were prominent in a whole host of responses.

The players in question: Timo Werner and Houssem Aouar, who are valued at £72m and £49.5m by Transfermarkt respectively.

The Bundesliga and Ligue 1 stars have both been linked with moves to Liverpool.

Liverpool’s interest in Werner, 24, has been documented for a number of months, while the club have also been credited with interest in Aouar, 21, in the past.

Both players are stars in their divisions and, given they are at relatively early stages in their careers and have plenty of scope for improvement, it’s easy to understand why supporters are so eager to see them pull on the famous red shirt next season.

Whether Jurgen Klopp will be able to bring both players to the club, however, remains to be seen.

Here’s what the fans had to say when asked who they’d like to sign…

Tottenham fans react to Arkadiusz Milik link

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting on Twitter after Ricky Sacks relayed the news that the club is reportedly interested in signing Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, as per Italian journalist Nicolo Schira.

The tweet from Schira didn’t have a great deal of information in it, simply stating that the Poland international could leave the Serie A outfit this summer, and that Spurs and Bundesliga outfit Schalke are keen on him.

The north London outfit’s troubles and lack of options without the injured Harry Kane in recent months surely show that they must sign a new centre-forward whenever the next transfer window is, and it appears as though Milik could be on their list of options.

The 26-year-old has a decent record of 46 goals in 109 appearances for the Naples-based outfit, but he has suffered with injury issues, too.

Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, he has missed 61 matches since the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign, including two serious knee injuries.

That record is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by some Spurs supporters, as you can see below, with one individual describing him as a “good striker but Kane 2.0”.

Here is a selection of the reaction…

Two unsung Leeds United players who have impressed this season

Leeds are well on their way to topping the Championship table and clinching promotion into the Premier League with a very talented and in-form squad.

We can appreciate the clinical nature of the likes of Patrick Bamford, but what about those that may have slipped under the radar slightly amid all the excitement?

Stuart Dallas

Scoring goals at one end isn’t the only ingredient to a title-winning recipe, a team needs to ensure they aren’t letting them in at the other end. Leeds’ defence has been equally as solid as their attack this season, and Stuart Dallas has gone criminally overlooked.

The Irishman has started every game for the Whites this campaign and has kept 16 clean sheets whilst also contributing to four goals – scoring three of them himself and creating 10 big chances. Leeds also have the lowest amount of goals (30) scored against them, which Dallas has assisted with going off his 2.2 average tackles and one interception per game.

The 28-year-old hasn’t made any errors this season which have to a goal or indeed, a shot, whereas teammates Liam Cooper has made one error that led to a shot and Gaetano Berardi has given away a penalty.

Dallas’ calm and collected nature, as well as his ability to get forward down the flank, should be appreciated and rewarded when Leeds inevitably find their way back to the Premier League.

Tyler Roberts

When you’re up against the club’s top scorer for the season, it’s hard to break through and grab a slice of the limelight, which is why Tyler Roberts is in this list. The Welshman has only started four games this season but has taken part in 14 overall, bagging himself three goals.

Roberts also has better attacking stats than that of Premier League-tested Steve Mounie. The 21-year-old averages a much better accurate pass percentage (71.5%) to Mounie’s 60.6% along with his 0.3 dribbles on average per match compared to the Huddersfield man’s 0.1.

Granted, Roberts has only played an average of 35 minutes per appearance, but he has contributed to shaping Leeds’ season and has kept airtight discipline, picking up no bookings at all. The Welsh forward is a young talent certainly worth keeping an eye on.

West Ham: Fans react to reported plans for next season’s kits

Next season is a historic one for West Ham as it will be the club’s 125th anniversary and a lot of fans are reacting to a tweet from West Ham News which says that the side are looking to do something memorable with the kits to commemorate the landmark, according to EXWHUemployee.

The East London side, formerly known as Thames Ironworks FC, was created in the late 1800’s and in 1900 they changed their name to West Ham United, via footballhistory.

The club has had many historic memories throughout the years, which has included silverware in the form of three FA Cups, the Charity Shield and a Cup Winners’ Cup triumph, via Transfermarkt.

Some of the players who have come through the club will be remembered by not just the Irons fan base but by all who love the sport, including 1996 World Cup winner Bobby Moore and Sir Trevor Brooking, as per worldfootball.

It will be nice for the club to celebrate the many memories since the club began with a special kit, although some fans have been reacting to the news by joking about the club’s current situation as they are 16th in Premier League and fighting for their life in England’s top flight, via BBC Sport.

Here is what these Hammers fans had to say following the tweet:

Tottenham move for Daniel Sturridge would ensure they don’t suffer up top again

[ad_pod ]

According to the printed version of The Mirror (February 12, page 56), per HITC, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, it is looking likely that the 29-year-old will leave Anfield at the end of the campaign considering there have been no developments in him extending his deal with the Merseyside outfit, and The Mirror, via HITC, reports that he is interesting clubs both from the Premier League and abroad.

The Mirror report that the England international may well choose to remain in the English top flight however, and Spurs are keen on him to provide back-up to Harry Kane next term with Fernando Llorente likely to leave the north London club this summer.

The report adds that the centre-forward, who earns £120,000-a-week, would help to boost Tottenham’s number of home-grown players.

Would he be a good addition?

He certainly would be.

While Sturridge turns 30 years of age this year and has suffered from his fair share of injury issues over the years, he has still scored 77 goals in 213 Premier League appearances and the chance to sign him for nothing would be an opportunity that is too good to turn down.

Of course, Tottenham have found themselves without the injured Kane in recent weeks and while their form hasn’t really suffered, they would be much better off if they had an out-and-out striker who is proven over many years at this level – something that Llorente isn’t – and would allow Son Heung-Min to play out wide instead as well as through the middle.
