Emery can get Arsenal’s transfer window going by ditching Elneny

Last summer, Arsenal’s recruitment drive largely focused on the strengthening of the team’s midfield.

The Gunners brought in both Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi to bolster that area, resulting in Mohamed Elneny seeing little game time this season, which could now see him leave the Emirates.

The Breakdown

Tuttomercatoweb (via Football Italia) reports AS Roma have asked Arsenal about Elneny’s availability in hope of taking the 26-year-old on loan with an option to buy, a proposal Emery should strongly consider.

The Spaniard has confirmed he is working with limited finances meaning arrivals are unlikely at the Emirates this month unless the club can get some players off of their wage books, and Elneny is just one easily expendable name who they can afford to give the chop.

Elneny is no better than Torreira, Guendouzi or Granit Xhaka, leaving him with an uphill battle to get into Emery’s starting XI.

Therefore, given their financial predicament, Arsenal would be better off getting rid of the Egypt international and give his spot to a homegrown player in a move which should help free up some funds and allow Emery to strengthen his squad elsewhere.

By no means is Elneny a terrible midfielder. But with the situation Arsenal find themselves in, parting ways with the former Basel man just seems like the right decision for both parties.

The Worst January Transfers In Premier League History

The January transfer window is a pretty predictable part of any Premier League season. By the time the winter comes around, clubs know where they stand in terms of what they should be competing for during the second half of the campaign.

Those battling relegation know they need to strengthen and more often than not, will take a few gambles in the transfer market in an attempt to turn things around and fight their way out of trouble. Whereas those either battling for the title or pushing for European qualification will be a little bit more composed in their business.

Both scenarios inevitably lead to the same thing – transfers being made that just don’t work out. Teams at both ends of the table have done it, and there are always a handful of January signings who arrive with great fanfare before drifting off into obscurity shortly afterwards.

How many of the players arriving at Premier League clubs this winter will join the illustrious list of the worst ever January transfers in Premier League history.

How many has your club made?

Ricardo Rocha to Tottenham (2007)

Portuguese Rocha had been playing Champions League football for Benfica before completing a £3.3m move to Spurs in 2007 and made his first appearance in Ledley King’s stead on 27th January.

However, he went on to make just five appearances for the Lilywhites in 2007/08 and didn’t play one competitive game the next season – he was released on 14th June 2009 upon the expiry of his three-and-a-half-year contract. Flop.

Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea (2015)

Juan Cuadrado might be tearing it up in Italy with Juventus these days, but the Colombian had a torrid time at Stamford Bridge following a £27.9m switch from Fiorentina in 2015.

The pacey winger couldn’t produce the goods in the Prem and made just four appearances under Jose Mourinho before being sent packing on loan. A permanent switch to the Old Lady was sealed in summer 2017 and so ended his disappointing Blues career.

Kostas Mitroglou to Fulham (2014)

Prior to his 2014 move to relegation battlers Fulham, Kostas Mitroglou was one of the most in-form strikers in Europe having bagged 14 goals in 12 league appearances for Olympiakos.

The Craven Cottage faithful were pinning their survival hopes on the £12m hitman but he couldn’t deliver – the sick-note striker made just three appearances and failed to find the net, before being sent back to Greece on loan. Thankfully, there’s a different – and far better – Mitro at Fulham these days.

Chris Samba to QPR (2013)

Big Chris Samba joined QPR from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013 with equally big expectations having commanded a club-record £12.5m fee, however his massive six-figure wages caused fan outrage after a string of error-strewn appearances.

The 34-year-old was sent back to Russia less than six months later having failed to prevent the Loftus Road outfit’s relegation from the Premier League. A costly mistake.

Guido Carrillo to Southampton (2018)

Carrillo made the move to Southampton in 2018 as the high-ups made quick use of the £75m received from the sale of Virgil van Dijk and was expected to get right amongst the goals having commanded a cool £19.2m fee.

However, the target man couldn’t hit a barn door for the Saints and, in failing to score in 10 appearances, was promptly sent out on loan to Leganes when the summer window opened. Worse than Shane Long.

Savio Nsereko to West Ham (2009)

When West Ham sold Craig Bellamy to Manchester City midway through the January window, panicking Hammers fans were appeased by the assurance that the £14m received would be spent on signing a new, top forward.

Enter Savio Nsereko, a £9m signing from Brescia who few had heard of and many would now rather forget. The Ugandan-born German made just ten appearances in claret and blue before being sold to Fiorentina just six months later.

Scott Parker to Chelsea (2004)

Parker made a name for himself as a young midfielder at Charlton Athletic and his performances earned an exciting, £12.6m move to Chelsea in 2004.

However, with the Roman Abramovich era just getting underway, the following months saw the Englishman frozen out with the likes of Juan Sebastion Veron and Claude Makelele to compete with and he ended up making just 29 appearances in all competitions before sealing a switch to Newcastle in summer 2005. Unfortunate.

Wilfried Bony to Man City (2015)

Bony became one of the most expensive African footballers in history after completing a £28m move from Swansea to Manchester City in 2015. The Ivorian had won the Golden Boot in 2013/14 with the Swans and scored nine by the half-way point in the following season.

However, the Ivorian couldn’t replicate that form at the Etihad and scored just six goals in 36 Prem appearances thereafter. He’s back in Wales now and hasn’t fared any better. Yikes.

Fernando Torres to Chelsea (2011)

Torres had notched an astonishing 81 goals in 142 appearances for Liverpool and had established himself as one of the Premier League’s top strikers, however a £50m move to Stamford Bridge in 2011 saw the Spaniard’s form plateau – and then plummet – quite spectacularly.

The number 9 took 903 minutes to net his first goal in Chelsea blue and that ended up being his only strike that season. He still has a special place in Blues fans’ hearts thanks to *that* goal against Barca, but his contributions otherwise were few and far between.

Gilberto to Spurs (2008)

Gilberto made headlines for all the wrong reasons during his brief stint at Spurs – the Daily Mail famously labelled the left-back “Brazil’s first rubbish footballer”.

He chalked up just seven appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit between his arrival on 31st January 2008 and 26th February 2009 – his last outing for the club – and his poor performances have led the 42-year-old to be branded Spurs’ worst winter signing in history. Ouch.

BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone reveals Aston Villa want energetic midfielder

Aston Villa supporters have woken up to the news that Tyrone Mings is on his way to Villa Park ahead of a temporary loan switch, but it seems Dean Smith will be looking to add more than just one player to his squad by the end of play.Â

The 11PM deadline is looming and Villa are facing a race against time to conclude at least two deals.

Sky Sports confirmed this morning that Mings is on his way to the Midlands for a medical, but BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone believes they will also be looking to sign a midfielder.

Indeed, via his personal Twitter account, Stone confirmed that Mings is on his way to Villa for a medical, but he also suggested that they are in the market for an energetic midfielder.

Well, it’s fair to say that Villa fans will be keeping a close eye on developments throughout the day as their side hunt for a new midfielder.

A report from Sky Sports on Wednesday revealed that Villa are interested in potential loan deals for either Isaac Hayden or Nathaniel Chalobah, and both players are matching the description of an energetic midfielder.

Hayden is lacking the guile and technical quality boasted by Chalobah, but he certainly possesses a level of energy in the middle of the park which will impress Smith.

With that in mind and Stone’s tweet also to take under consideration, it seems likely that either one of the aforementioned midfielders could move to Villa before the deadline passes on Thursday evening.

Chalobah’s huge level of untapped potential suggests he’s the player Smith should be prioritising throughout the day, but his unfortunate record with injuries could yet swing the decision in Hayden’s favour.

Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright must do this to get Carlo Ancelotti to join Everton

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

A report in The Sun has detailed what Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright need to do to convince Carlo Ancelotti to be Marco Silva’s successor.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun report that the 60-year-old is set to fly into London to have face-to-face talks with the Merseyside outfit over their vacant job.

The report says that they have made it clear to the Italian with their keen interest that he is their first-choice option to take the reins at Goodison Park, but goes on to say that Ancelotti needs some reassurances first seeing as a job in London would be preferable for him.

The Sun says that Moshiri and Kenwright’s outlining their plans for the club moving forward could be critical in him deciding Everton is the right next step for him to take.

Don’t let the club down

Everton look to be in a great position to appoint a manager of Ancelotti’s calibre – remember he has won three Champions Leagues as well as top-flight titles in England, France, Germany and Italy during his coaching career as per Transfermarkt – and we detailed previously how they are doing everything right at the moment.

Now when they meet face-to-face with the former Chelsea boss, they need to ensure that they are ambitious but realistic at the same time.

A length of contract that gives the 60-year-old time to mould something with the Toffees is surely imperative, while transfer funds could be a decisive talking point given some of the levels of performances we have seen from the side in recent seasons.

Ancelotti will surely want to bring in his own players to boost a squad that is currently lying just two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

Everton are in a great position here to get an individual who was managing in the Champions League earlier this week, and Moshiri and Kenwright now need to roll the red carpet out for him to get this done.

Manchester United should ensure this pair are the building blocks of their team for years to come

Manchester United continued their fine form under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they dismantled Fulham this weekend.

A brace from Paul Pogba and a fine solo goal from Anthony Martial put the icing on the cake for the Red Devils, who moved into the top four and stayed there with Chelsea failing to win at Man City.

For Soslkjaer, he must be delighted to see his players putting in such performances, and we here in the Tavern have been particularly impressed by two particular players during the Norwegian’s time in charge.

Those two players at pacey front-men Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who have been nothing short of superb since the departure of Jose Mourinho.

The speedsters have been getting in and amongst the goals, with Rashford in particular hitting top form in front of goal and making the starting striking spot his own ahead of Romelu Lukaku.

Martial to his credit has been superb too when selected, and his goal yesterday was a timely reminder of the quality he possesses when he chooses to turn it on.

For us here in the Tavern, we feel United need to build around the pair for years to come, and there can’t be many teams in the world who have two players with such quality, pace, and finishing ability among their front players.

United can be successful going forward with Martial and Rashford as the core of their plans, and there’s every reason to believe the trophies will flow with both players hitting their stride.

United fans, do you agree? Let us know in the comments!

Liverpool are interested in Mathieu Goncalves

As per L’Equipe, Liverpool are interested in signing Mathieu Goncalves from Toulouse.

What’s the story?

With the transfer window just around the corner, the rumours are starting to multiply, and the latest player linked with a switch to Anfield is the 18-year-old defender.

According to the report, the Reds want to make the 5 foot 10 teenager their latest young signing after the captures of Sepp van den Berg and Havey Elliott during the summer.

A left-back is needed

The youngster is tipped for a big future, and made his debut for Les Pitchounes against PSG earlier on this campaign. In his first four appearances to date, he has not set the world alight, picking up an average WhoScored rating of just 5.98. But given he is at the very start of his career he has plenty of time to improve, and there must be a reason why he is already receiving playing time.

This is the second left-back the Reds have been linked with in the last few days. 90min.com have recently reported that Liverpool are leading the race for Coventry City defender Sam McCallum, who has 11 starts this season in League One.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

It is quite obvious that a new recruit on that side of the defence is amongst Jurgen Klopp’s main plans. As it stands, Andrew Robertson is the only senior player in that role. In his absence, James Milner has been the man to step into the breach. He has the ability to do a job, but he is not a natural.

It is refreshing to see that it is a younger player that appears to be being targeted. By looking at players the start of their careers, it allows the 52-year-old boss to mould them into what he wants from them, rather than purchasing the end product. There are very few, if any full-backs in world football that play in the way Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold do – as their assist tallies from last year show – and that is a style of play that is so much harder to teach to an older head that has already made a name for himself in the sport.

Whether Goncalves or McCallum are signed remains to be sign, but one thing is clear: a left-back and youth are two things that are on Klopp’s wishlist.

Charlton fans criticise Naby Sarr for poor defensive display against QPR

Naby Sarr rescued a point for Charlton in a 2-2 draw with QPR but it is now 11 games without a win for the Addicks and the defender has been criticised despite his late effort.

Lee Bowyer’s side were outplayed for large spells at the R’s, managing just four shots on target and 43% possession, and found themselves behind early on due to a bad defensive error.

Fans were unforgiving in their criticism of Sarr, who was the man at fault for Geoff Cameron’s opener.

Without that mistake the game could have taken an entirely different course altogether.

To make matters worse, it is not the first time the Senegalese has let his side down this term, and the Addicks have now conceded 32 goals in 23 games.

The fact they’ve made just four clean sheets in that time indicates that defensive reinforcements may be necessary in January.

Sarr was the late hero and made up for the goal he gave away, but for some supporters he is making defensive errors with too much regularity, and they believe it is costing the team.

Who is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure Charlton players?

One fan has questioned why Bowyer continues to play him, which is rather harsh given Bowyer isn’t blessed with options, not to mention Sarr was a key component of the team that won promotion last season.

Nevertheless, if he continues to slip up his boss may be forced to act in the transfer window, or call upon the likes of Tom Lockyer and Adedeji Oshilaja to come in and replace him.

Elsewhere, there is bad news for supporters as two important players have suffered setbacks in regard to injuries.

Leicester fans buzzing with Christian Fuchs

Leicester were back to their ruthless best as they saw in 2020 with a clinical 3-0 win over Newcastle.

Ayoze Perez haunted his former side as James Maddison and Hamza Choudhury scored impressive long-range strikes which silenced St James’ Park.

It was a win that ensured the Foxes remained in second place, strengthening their top-four hopes after previously being swept aside by Liverpool and Manchester City.

Brendan Rodgers has favoured a degree of rotation over the festive period, bringing players like Nampalys Mendy and Christian Fuchs in from the cold.

The latter played as part of a three-man defence on New Year’s Day and certainly didn’t look out of place, leaving many fans on Twitter to salivate over the quality of his performance.

Fuchs played in an unorthodox position compared to the usual role of left-back, but he completed four interceptions and a pass success rate of 93% in what was a commanding effort.

One supporter described him as a purring Porsche which rather sums up the classy nature of the Austrian’s display.

Fuchs has struggled for regular minutes in 2019/20, being kept out of the team by England international Ben Chilwell.

Before the beginning of last month, he hadn’t played for Brendan Rodgers’ side since late October but he gained three starts in December.

His outing on Wednesday was just his sixth appearance of the season but it left a couple of fans wanting more. One claimed the team were better when he was in the side and given Leicester’s successive wins with Fuchs playing, there is certainly an argument to suggest that’s the case.

Fuchs’ contract expires at the end of the season and after securing a one-year extension last term, there is a sense that he could leave the Foxes for good in the summer or even before.

His last contract put to bed speculation of a potential move to America and MLS, but some individuals are crying out for him to put pen to paper again, praying that he remains at the club.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

One suggested that there was no need for the Premier League winner to go to the US. Judging by his performance against the Magpies, winning four aerial duels, he still has the quality to play in England’s top-flight.

One final supporter picked up on the way he played as part of a three-man backline, labelling the player legendary and suggesting that the formation Rodgers played was the future of Leicester.

A 3-0 win and a clean sheet certainly suggest that it worked perfectly as he shone next to Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans.

Man Utd target Donny van de Beek has the mentality to be a major success

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United are considering a move for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek in this January transfer window.

What’s the word?

The Red Devils are in the midst of an injury crisis in central midfield, with both Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba ruled out for the foreseeable future. That has left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with just Nemanja Matic and Fred as his only two options for the deeper-lying roles, with the experiment of testing Andreas Pereira in that position falling by the wayside.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

And now, according to The Telegraph, Van de Beek has emerged as one of the club’s “leading transfer targets”, and that whilst they are intent on not pressing the panic button, they are “determined to make signings that will help usher in long-term improvement”. The report adds Solskjaer is keen to bring in a midfielder this month to help solve the club’s issues, and believes the Ajax ace could “bring more creativity and cutting edge to the midfield.”

The solution

Van de Beek has been an integral part of Ajax’s recent success, helping the Eredivisie giants to the Champions League semi-finals last season. He scored three goals and provided a further two assists as his side enjoyed a fairy-tale run to the last four, and found the back of the net in huge away games against both Juventus and Tottenham.

And this season he has continued his fine form, netting eight times and providing another eight assists in 26 games across all competitions. The Dutchman is a goal-scoring midfielder, and quite simply someone who proves his mettle in the big games. This campaign has seen him net against both Chelsea and Valencia away from home, whilst he also set up a goal in the final of the Johan Cruijff Schaal against PSV.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Van de Beek would certainly represent a popular choice with some United fans, who have previously thrown their backing behind a potential move. With the Old Trafford supporters seemingly on board, it really does feel like a match made in heaven for the Red Devils. The Dutchman’s big-game mentality means he could handle the pressure of playing at the Theatre of Dreams, and has the winning mindset that could make him a star.

Meanwhile, Manchester United fans discuss transfer links to this striker better than Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial in key area.
