ATUAÇÕES: Luciano marca e garante vitória do São Paulo no Morumbi

Having suffered their biggest-ever defeat at Chepauk on Friday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have responded with two changes for their away game against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Jamie Overton replaced his compatriot Sam Curran and made his IPL debut while Vijay Shankar came in for Deepak Hooda.Overton lends more strength to the middle order and can also hit heavy lengths at speeds north of 140kph with the ball. As for Vijay, he’s an old face for CSK, having played for them in 2014 before moving to different franchises. He was carded at bat at No. 4 in CSK’s bowl-first XI, but it’s likely that Shivam Dube could slot in there as an Impact Player, with Vijay dropping down the order. There was no room for Devon Conway, though. As for RR, they were unchanged from the defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the same venue. Newcastle star who was sold by Ashley outscored Wissa & Woltemade in 24/25

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window revolved around one question: who would replace Alexander Isak?

The Swedish striker’s inevitable move to Liverpool would leave a gaping hole in Eddie Howe’s attack, and the club spent the entire summer working to secure a replacement.

Newcastle chased Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, João Pedro and Benjamin Šeško, but all proved out of reach.

Longstanding interest in Wolves’ Jørgen Strand Larsen and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa also seemed destined to fail as neither club was willing to negotiate.

But in the final days of the window, Newcastle pulled off two significant deals.

They signed Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade for a club-record £69m before finally landing Wissa for £55m after the player drove through the night to push the transfer over the line.

Those two arrivals may yet define the Magpies’ summer.

With Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale, and Anthony Elanga also joining, Newcastle have strengthened in multiple areas.

But the focus will be firmly on how the new strike force adapts to life after Isak.

What Woltemade and Wissa will bring to Newcastle

At 23 years old and standing 1.98m tall, Woltemade represents the future.

He arrives from Stuttgart on the back of a breakthrough Bundesliga campaign, scoring 12 goals in 28 appearances and earning three senior caps for Germany.

His performances at the U21 European Championships underlined his potential – strong in the air, technically assured, and capable of linking play as well as finishing chances.

Wissa, meanwhile, brings Premier League pedigree. He scored 19 goals and registered five assists in 35 appearances for Brentford last season, cementing himself as one of the division’s most underrated forwards.

Across his Premier League career, he has 45 goals in 137 appearances – a proven track record Newcastle badly need.

Statistically, the pair offer different strengths. As per FBref, Woltemade’s 50% shot-on-target rate last season was higher than Wissa’s 45.6%, but Wissa contributed more goal involvements overall (23 compared to 14).

Wissa also presses with intensity, recording more tackles per 90 than his new teammate, while Woltemade excels at progressing the ball, registering 4.38 shot-creating actions per 90 compared to Wissa’s 2.13.

Both will be expected to share the goalscoring burden left behind by Isak.

Wissa’s immediate impact will be crucial – especially with Anthony Gordon suspended – while Woltemade may be bedded in gradually as he adjusts to the Premier League.

One issue looms: Wissa could miss a significant stretch of the season in early 2026 due to the Africa Cup of Nations. That makes Woltemade’s development even more important.

Former Magpie is now outscoring them all

While Newcastle reshape their frontline, one former striker of the turbulent Mike Ashley is quietly enjoying a renaissance.

Ayoze Pérez, who joined the Magpies on a £1.5m deal from Tenerife in 2014, made 195 appearances for the club, scoring 48 goals and registering 17 assists.

He was one of the few bright sparks during the disastrous 2015/16 relegation campaign, then played a key role in Rafa Benítez’s promotion-winning side and their re-establishment in the Premier League.

His performances even “impressed” Alan Shearer, who praised the Spaniard’s impact in his debut season when he scored seven league goals.

Pérez eventually left Newcastle for Leicester City in 2019, with Ashley and co raking in a £30m fee, and later moved to Real Betis in 2022.

But it was his switch to Villarreal in 2024 that reignited his career.

Last season, he scored 19 goals and added two assists in 30 La Liga matches, earning a surprise call-up to the Spanish national team where he made his debut in a 5-0 win against Andorra.

In all competitions, he scored 22 times in 2024/25, eclipsing the totals that both Wissa (20) and Woltemade (17) achieved across all fronts for their respective former clubs.

That is what makes his story particularly interesting for Newcastle fans – how his output compares with their new arrivals.

Statistically, he remains effective: Pérez averaged 3.33 progressive passes per 90 and 3.26 shot-creating actions per 90 – more than both Wissa and Woltemade.

He also recorded more progressive carries per 90 (2.69) and showed his defensive contribution with 1.23 tackles per 90.

In many ways, Pérez’s revival mirrors Joselu’s late-career success in Spain after his underwhelming Newcastle stint.

Both strikers have shown that Tyneside was just one chapter in their stories, not the defining one.

Where Are They Now

For Newcastle, the challenge now lies in ensuring that Woltemade and Wissa not only carry the weight of Isak’s departure but also measure up to the legacy of strikers of the past.

Warwickshire survive fine 90 from Joe Root to set up 185 victory target

Ethan Bamber adds four wickets to his first innings five-for to take match figures of 9 for 107

Warwickshire survived a fine 90 from England star Joe Root to set up a target of 185 in order to secure victory in their Rothesay County Championship clash with Yorkshire at Headingley.Yorkshire were bowled out for 232 in their second innings late on day two, with visiting new-ball seamer Ethan Bamber adding four wickets to his five in the first innings, completing impressive match figures of 9 for 107.Warwickshire then closed on 15 without loss from three overs of their run chase. The day started with the Bears, replying to a first-innings 205, advancing from 161 for six overnight to 253 all out, with Australian Test all-rounder Beau Webster completing a superb 85 off 86 balls on debut. He helped secure a lead of 48 but was the last visiting wicket to fall, caught trying to attack against New Zealand quick Ben Sears, who finished with four wickets.Ed Barnard removed Root for one in the first innings, though the chances of that happening again were realistically slim. But Warwickshire’s bowlers chipped away at the wickets when they started bowling again 35 minutes before lunch. They built early pressure. Bamber bowled locum opener Dom Bess in the third over, leaving the score at 9 for 1.And, either side of lunch, that was the first of seven successive maidens bowled by him and new-ball partner Olly Hannon-Dalby, who hails from down the road in Halifax.James Wharton was run out at the non-striker’s end during the early stages of the afternoon following a mix-up with opener Adam Lyth, who then went on to share a third-wicket 71 with Root from 19 for 2.Both look assured, though Lyth’s effort was curtailed 10 runs short of a fifty when he edged behind off the back foot to Ed Barnard’s seam, leaving the hosts at 90 for 3 in the 28th over. The ICC’s No. 1 and No. 2 ranked Test batters, Root and Harry Brook, then shared 53 for the fourth wicket, though the latter’s stay was too brief for Yorkshire’s liking. He fell lbw for 20, playing around a full ball from seamer Michael Booth shortly before tea, where the hosts reached at 152 for 4 with a lead of 104.Jonny Bairstow top-edged a pull at Bamber behind on six, with wicketkeeper Kai Smith taking a smart running catch, before George Hill edged Barnard to second slip. And when Jordan Thompson miscued to cover as Barnard struck for a third time, Yorkshire were 190 for 7 in the 60th over, leading by 142.All the while, Root looked commanding at the crease in his 100th first-class innings for the county, hitting 13 fours in 131 balls. He reached his fifty off 64 balls, and one driven boundary straight of mid-off against Webster was particularly memorable. However, he missed out on a century when he top-edged a pull to backward point off Bamber to make it 219 for 8.Dan Mousley was the catcher, and the same combination did for Sears soon after before Ben Coad was bowled by Booth for 28, giving Warwickshire a short period of batting to navigate before close. With the bat in the first innings, Webster was excellent before lunch in getting the Bears up to and just beyond 250.A tall and imposing figure at the crease, he mixed power with invention in moving from 32 overnight to reach his fifty off 54 balls and give his new county a decent lead and a batting bonus point. He scooped Coad for six and muscled expensive compatriot seamer Jordan Buckingham, also on debut for Yorkshire, through the off-side for a trio of boundaries to help the Bears into the lead.He dominated a 74-run partnership for the eighth wicket with keeper Smith before pulling Sears to midwicket to end the innings. Smith contributed 19.Sears and Hill claimed two wickets apiece, three of them caught behind by Bairstow.

Worth even more than Kudus: Spurs have struck gold on "sensational" talent

After taking the reins from Ange Postecoglou during the off-season, the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy needed to hand Thomas Frank the funds he needed to make the necessary additions he demanded.

The Dane made a beeline for the signature of West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus, subsequently forking out a fee in the region of £55m for his signature.

The Ghanaian has already been a crucial member of the squad in 2025/26, missing just nine minutes of Premier League action and nailing down the right-wing position as his own.

He’s already demonstrated his quality in North London, registering two assists to date – one of which was for Richarlison, with the Brazilian’s acrobatic effort against Burnley winning the club’s goal of the month.

Kudus’ subsequent move to join the Lilywhites puts him in a limited group of players in their history, joining multiple players who have joined for at least £50m – but how did the last three other players in the category fare?

The last three Spurs players who joined for at least £50m

Just last summer, Spurs forked out a club-record £65m to land the services of Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth – with a real impetus on the Englishman to provide the goods in the final third.

However, just over 12 months on, the 28-year-old has struggled with injuries, only making 31 minutes of league action this season – failing to add to his tally of 16 goals from 2024/25.

The aforementioned Richarlison was another player who joined for big money, making the move to the capital from Everton after the hierarchy paid £50m for his signature in the summer of 2022.

The Brazilian has received a new lease of life under Frank, already netting twice this campaign, taking his total goals for the Lilywhites to 22 in his 96 appearances across all competitions.

Both players have arguably been a success, but the same can’t be said for Tanguy Ndombele, with the Frenchman previously being their record addition before Solanke joined the side.

He cost a staggering £63m from Lyon in the summer of 2019, but his lack of fitness led to huge questions around his transfer – evidently not being at the speed needed for the Premier League.

After 91 appearances in North London, he would depart on a free transfer in the summer of 2024, further highlighting how much of a disaster his transfer turned out to be.

Kudus will be hoping to avoid replicating the latter, but one other player now falls into the category of high fees after his remarkable performances since making his own transfer to the club.

The Spurs player already worth more than Kudus

Whilst much has been made about Spurs’ lack of spending over recent years, the hierarchy have shown their backing within the transfer market under various managers.

In the last three years alone, over £400m has been spent on new additions in the window, funds which undoubtedly contributed to their incredible Europa League triumph last season.

All areas of the pitch have been strengthened as a result, which have also allowed Frank to hit the ground running with his record of four wins from his five competitive outings.

The backline has played a massive part, keeping clean sheets in all of those victories, with Micky van de Ven being a crucial part of their recent success in the defensive third.

The Dutch international arrived as an unknown quantity to many back in the summer of 2023, but he’s rapidly becoming one of Europe’s most impressive and valuable centre-backs.

He clocked the fastest speed of any player in England’s top-flight in 2024/25, which enabled him to have an effect at both ends of the pitch despite the lowly league finish.

Van de Ven’s most impressive moment certainly came against Manchester United at Old Trafford, gliding past the opposition from one end to another, before teeing up Brennan Johnson for an easy finish at the back post.

The 24-year-old, who’s been dubbed “sensational” by The Athletic’s Jay Harris, also demonstrated his defensive prowess, with his acrobatic goal-line clearance against the same side securing the Lilywhites’ first trophy in 17 years.

His pace at the back is unconventional for a centre-back, but it’s made him a monster hit with the fanbase – with his performances making his value soar in recent times.

He’s now valued at £53.2m by FootballTransfers, a £16m increase on the fee the hierarchy forked out for his signature back in the summer of 2023 under Postecoglou’s guidance.

His subsequent value is higher than that of new addition, Kudus, with the attacker now worth £45.9m despite his big-money arrival just a couple of months ago.

Both players have the tools to play a real part in any success that could be achieved during Frank’s tenure in North London over the next couple of seasons.

However, it’s evidence that the club have turned the corner in the transfer market and are now making sensational pieces of business that could make them a force to be reckoned with once again.

Chelsea and Maresca agree "priority" signing as club work on centre-back deal

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca wanted a centre-back in the summer transfer window, but the west Londoners could be set to finally grant his wish in January.

Chelsea's defensive struggles laid bare after 3-1 defeat to Brighton

Blues legend José Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge tonight as Chelsea take on Benfica in the Champions League, and the ‘special one’ will be well aware of just how fragile his former club look defensively right now.

Trevoh Chalobah was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity in Chelsea’s last outing, a humbling 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, where Fabian Hurzeler’s side made the extra man count and ran out deserved winners in the English capital.

Levi Colwill’s ACL injury, which is expected to keep him out for most of 2025/2026, has undoubtedly contributed to Chelsea’s weakness at the back, and Maresca is left with precious few options right now with Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana also injured.

Chelsea are winless in the Premier League since this time last month and have conceded 11 goals in their last five outings across all competitions, with BlueCo arguably paying the price for not signing a centre-back in the summer.

Despite being one of the division’s biggest spenders, Chelsea’s priority at the time was to bring in new attackers, with no room left to bolster Maresca’s backline.

Chelsea did try to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, before the Spaniard’s £50 million move to Real Madrid, and Maresca strongly suggested towards the end of the transfer window that they needed another body in that area.

Since then, reports have claimed that Chelsea could dip back into the market for a new defender mid-season, with journalist Pete O’Rourke sharing an update on this.

Chelsea and Maresca agree on "priority" signing as club work to sign centre-back

According to the reporter, in a piece for Football Insider, Chelsea and Maresca are in alignment about signing a centre-back.

Both the club and manager feel that bringing one is now a “priority” for January, with Chelsea believed to be working on defensive reinforcements for when the window reopens.

It is imperative that Chelsea back Maresca and provide the Italian with another world-class option. Tosin and Fofana’s injuries have added to his woes, as Chelsea brace to take on table-topping Liverpool this weekend with a very weakened backline.

Benoit Badiashile’s return to the fold couldn’t have come at a better time, but Chalobah will be suspended for their Stamford Bridge clash against Arne Slot’s side.

Luckily for Chelsea, the Cobham academy graduate will only serve a one-match domestic ban before returning after the international break against Nottingham Forest.

In the meantime, Chelsea’s recruitment team must get to work on finding the right profile for January, with Club Brugge starlet Joel Ordonez among BlueCo’s potential targets alongside Benfica’s Antonio Silva (Simon Phillips).
