'I would like to dream about it' – Jamie Carragher reveals ideal Liverpool transfer as Reds legend collects special award

Jamie Carragher has revealed what his "dream" Liverpool transfer would be but admits it is a long shot. The Reds legend was honoured in Bilbao on Tuesday where he received the 2025 One Club Man award after spending his entire career at the Merseyside outfit. Before being handed this honour by Athletic Club, the ex-defender admitted he would love to see a La Liga player in a Liverpool shirt.

Carragher picks up special award

Carragher was honoured at Estadio de San Mames before Athletic Club's 1-1 draw with Girona, with the Spanish team recognising his loyalty to Liverpool over a 17-year career.

On the tribute, he said: "It is an honour to be here this afternoon. It means a lot to me. The biggest achievement of my career was to have played 17 years at the club of my life."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportCarragher wants Williams in a Liverpool shirt

Carragher was then asked by DAZN which Athletic Club player he would take to Liverpool. Unsurprisingly, it was star Nico Williams.

He replied: "Yes. I would take the one everyone wants to take. Nico [Williams] is a fantastic player. He scored the first goal against England in the Euro final. Spain deserved to win. I know he is your player and he has renewed for 10 years, but I would like to see him in a Liverpool shirt. I know it is not going to happen, but I would like to dream about it."

Williams one of game's most coveted players

Arsenal and Barcelona have come close to signing Williams in the past year or so, and Liverpool have also been linked with the Spain international. Just when it looked like he might move to Barca this summer, he signed a new 10-year deal with Athletic Club. Therefore, it seems the 23-year-old will stay put at the Basque outfit for another season at least.

Both Liverpool and Athletic Club play three more times before the October international break, with the former taking on Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea in the space of a week. And the latter lock horns with Villarreal, Borussia Dortmund, and Mallorca over the same time period between this Saturday and October 4.

Derby County frontrunners to land "fantastic" star with talks accelerating

Derby County are scouring the market for late reinforcements and find themselves at the front of the queue to bring an exciting attacker to Pride Park.

Derby County boss John Eustace discusses transfer aims

The transfer window is soon coming to an end and John Eustace is still looking to add one or two individuals to his side in order to bolster their depth for the bulk of the EFL Championship campaign.

In particular, bringing in a winger has become a key priority for the former Blackburn Rovers boss, who is hopeful he can recruit someone to offer a different dimension across the front three.

Derby County manager JohnEustace

He stated in his most recent press conference: “That would be great. But if we don’t, there are no issues and we move on. The business that the club have done up to now has been good.

“You can see we’re making big strides forward. I think some of the players that are coming in might have surprised a few that they’ve decided to join Derby County, but that’s because we’re doing the right things. They know over the next two or three seasons it’s going to be a really exciting place to be.”

After acquiring Max Johnston and Lewis Travis, Derby are keen on a late deal for Chesterfield winger Armando Dobra, who is also attracting interest from a wealth of clubs in the EFL.

Further arrivals are expected, and it may well become a scenario of waiting until deadline day, where players are widely available to move freely in order to claim regular minutes.

With time ticking ahead of the close of play, Derby may now be in pole position to land a talented attacker with plenty of experience at the top level.

Derby County in pole position to land Ben Brereton Diaz

According to Football League World, Derby are in pole postion to land Southampton attacker Ben Brereton Diaz despite plenty of interest in his services from clubs abroad and in England.

After not making a single league appearance under Will Still, the Chile international looks set to depart before Monday’s deadline and Finn Azaz’s arrival on the South Coast has pushed him further down the pecking order.

Labelled “fantastic” by Chris Wilder, Diaz has featured twice in the EFL Cup this term, and completed 17 outings in the Championship circa 2024/25, registering four goals and three assists.

Nevertheless, he is now in need of a new adventure and Derby are expected to ramp up talks over the weekend to find an agreement, which could offer Eustace a wide option that can also operate through the middle to satisfy his desire for offensive options.

Derby aren’t finished yet in the window and are making tracks on the recruitment front and will hope to seal a deal in the next couple of days.

'Not even half as good as Jude' – Jobe Bellingham is the 'only problem' at Borussia Dortmund as ex-Bayern Munich star warns Englishman's situation 'isn't getting better'

Dietmar Hamann has labelled Jobe Bellingham as Borussia Dortmund's "only cause for concern" amid the club's strong start to the season. The German legend's criticism comes as the 20-year-old struggles for form, with manager Niko Kovac defending the 'nervous' star amid reports of off-field pressure from his family.

Bellingham off to rough start at Borussia Dortmund

Hamann has labelled Jobe as the "only problem child" at Dortmund, despite the club's impressive start to the season. Writing in his column for , Hamann praised the overall progress made under coach Kovac but singled out the young English midfielder for his struggles to make an impact.

So far this season, Bellingham has struggled to solidify a place in Dortmund's starting lineup. He has featured in eight matches across all competitions, accumulating just 281 minutes of action. He has been named in the first XI only three times – twice in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League – while failing to register a goal or an assist.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWhat Hamann said about ex-Sunderland player's struggles

Hamann feels Dortmund themselves have made good progress under the current boss, but feels Bellingham has some trouble ahead.

"The momentum Niko Kovac has brought to the table is truly impressive. Finally, consistency. The whole team is finally working for the win. I don't think they'll be able to keep up with Munich until the end, because Bayern seem to be able to step up a gear when necessary," he wrote.

"But BVB's development is really good. Just imagine if they had even won the games in Turin and at St. Pauli . Then they'd be on Bayern's level. The only cause for concern seems to be Jobe Bellingham. Young, expensive and, so far, not even half as good as Jude Bellingham. It's not getting any easier for him."

Kovac defends 'nervous' Bellingham after latest struggles

Hamann's criticism comes as Bellingham continues to find his feet in the Bundesliga. In Dortmund's recent 4-1 Champions League victory over Athletic Club, the midfielder was handed a rare start but was substituted after 69 minutes following an unconvincing display. Manager Kovac, however, defended his player, saying: "Sure, he made one or two bad passes. But the boy is 20, and there's a lot of nervousness. I was very pleased with his performance."

Off-field pressure mounting on young midfielder

Bellingham's on-field difficulties appear to be compounded by off-field tensions. According to reports, the midfielder is feeling "massively insecure" due to pressure from his family. The situation reportedly escalated in August when his father and advisor, Mark, confronted sporting director Sebastian Kehl and Kovac over a lack of playing time. While the club has downplayed any rift, the episode adds context to the intense scrutiny surrounding the player, who has started just three of Dortmund's eight matches this season.

Everton hero Tarkowski fires warning to Liverpool ahead of Merseyside derby

Everton make the trip to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby this weekend and defender James Tarkowski has fired a warning to the Blues rivals.

Everton preparing for trip to Liverpool

David Moyes’ side drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, in what was a respectable result, but also one that could have been better for the hosts.

Next up for Everton is a huge game against local rivals Liverpool at Anfield this weekend, as they look to be the first team to take points off the Premier League champions this season.

The early signs in 2025/26 suggest that the Blues could cause the Reds problems, with Moyes and his players having all week to prepare, while Liverpool have midweek Champions League commitments.

Memories of Tarkowski’s unforgettable late equaliser for Everton at home to Liverpool last season are still fresh, and it appears as though the Englishman is raring to go ahead of a massive occasion.

Tarkowski bullish ahead of Liverpool-Everton clash

Speaking to the club’s official website, Tarkowski fired a subtle warning to Liverpool ahead of this weekend, saying Everton are only “going to get better” this season.

“I think we’re going to get better. We’re going to keep progressing, keep improving with the players we’ve got here – there’s some very good players on the bench who haven’t been used today who I think can be very exciting for us.

James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford

“We’ve took on Villa and I know they’ve not had a great start to the season, but I think they’re one of the best teams around. So to put a performance like that, to sort of dominate for most of the game, just despite we didn’t get the goal in the end.

“[We’re] slightly disappointed that we didn’t win, but as a defender, it’s a clean sheet – and I thought as a team we defended really solidly well throughout the game and kept a team with very, very good forward players to very little chance.”

Tarwowski has every right to be in positive mood ahead of the Liverpool match on Saturday, considering the promising start Everton have made to the new season.

After losing to Leeds United on the opening weekend, the Blues have responded impressively with seven points from three games, with Jack Grealish flourishing on loan from Manchester City and Moyes continuing to thrive in his second spell in charge.

Form can so often go out of the window in Merseyside derbies, with Everton taking points off Liverpool plenty of times in recent times, and while they will clearly be underdogs this weekend, Blues supporters should feel confident heading into the game.

Now worth more than Grealish: Everton must regret selling "phenomenal" star

Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa brought into sharp focus Everton’s lack of quality strikers, so they must regret selling this phenomenal striker.

ByBen Gray Sep 14, 2025

The Reds may have maximum points, but they have needed late goals in all four matches to win their games, and if Moyes’ men can quieten the Anfield crowd early, they will have a good chance of picking up a positive result.

LSG implode after rocket-fuelled start to finish on 210 against DC

Mitch Marsh and Nicholas Pooran dealt in sixes to give LSG a tremendous start

Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh – 147 off 66 ballsThe rest of Lucknow Super Giants – 55 off 55 ballsIt was an innings of two halves in Delhi Capitals’ opening game against LSG in Visakhapatnam. When Marsh and Pooran were going the way they were, LSG looked set for more than 250. Then came an implosion and LSG found themselves well short. That’s saying something because, despite the late quick wickets, LSG finished on 209 for 8. Yet, DC will feel relatively happy going into the break.Marsh, who is playing IPL 2025 as a batter, piled on the runs in the powerplay – 43 off just 19 balls, the most he has ever scored in the phase in the IPL. His countryman, Mitchell Starc, was at the receiving end.Starc started with four dot balls and a single to Aiden Markram in the first over. Then he bowled a length ball on leg stump, and Marsh walloped him over deep square leg for a huge six first ball. Starc’s next over was when Marsh took full toll. The first ball was tonked for a six over long-off by Markram. Then Marsh went 4, 6, 4 against Starc, an over which went for 21.Vipraj Nigam, on IPL debut, was pulled for four by Marsh, but he soon had his revenge as he sent back Markram for 15. That brought Marsh and Pooran together and they pummelled the DC bowlers. Pooran was dropped on 17 by Sameer Rizvi, and once he got that reprieve, there was no stopping him. He carted three sixes in a Nigam over and then hammered four back-to-back sixes and a four off Stubbs, an over which went for 28. Marsh brought up his fifty off 21 balls, Pooran took 24 and the duo added 87 off 42 balls.Marsh fell for 72 off 36 balls, while Pooran was cleaned up for 75 off 30 by a swinging Starc fall. But the wickets brought DC back into play. Rishabh Pant fell for a six-ball duck on LSG debut, while none of the other LSG batters did much. The last seven overs cost DC only 49 runs with LSG losing six wickets, and that included two David Miller sixes off the final two balls.

Rangers make first approach for £1.85 million Mexican youngster

Russell Martin is on the hunt for something that can help kick-start Rangers’ season and ensure that his tenure in Scotland isn’t a black spot on his resume.

Near the bottom of the Scottish Premiership and having failed to qualify for the Champions League, the highlights of Rangers’ season so far have come in the Scottish League Cup. Ahead of the Cup win against Hibernian, Martin described what a positive result could mean for the team: “I think it is an amazing opportunity for us to come through this period as a squad, to grow through it and to be so strong from it, and hopefully at that point everyone will come together, we just need to win football matches.”

The 2-0 victory and the reintroduction of Nicolas Raskin into the first team could provide a much-needed boost, and the opportunity to knock Celtic out in the next round could bring something of a feel-good feeling to the team.

However, the side is still in desperate need of goals, and the 49ers group appear to have their eye on a youngster who could help Rangers with their goal scoring in the long term.

Rangers make first approach for Mexican youngster

The 49ers have their eyes on the Mexican league as they’re showing interest in a youngster from title contenders Cruz Azul. This comes in the form of 19-year-old attacking midfielder Amaury Morales.

The youngster’s appearances this season have been sporadic, but when given a chance, he has shown hints at why he is highly touted. In the Leagues Cup, when he was given a full hour to play, he helped his team by providing an assist when Cruz Azul were 2-0 down. His team then went on to score an equaliser and knock Colorado out on penalties.

Reports from Mexico, via Sport Witness, have indicated Rangers’ interest in the youngster isn’t just speculative, and they have made a first approach to Cruz Azul. The youngster’s contract lasts until 2029, and he is currently valued at approximately £1.85 million.

Rangers aren’t the only club interested in Morales, and Spanish side Espanyol have also been linked, although only the Scottish side are reported to have made contact. Rangers have a pre-existing relationship with Cruz Azul, as they loaned Carlos Peña to them back in 2018.

Big tournament for Morales

For the moment, Rangers will continue to monitor Morales with the hopes he’s given more chances to shine like he did against Colorado. Rangers fans will get a chance to see him at the international level as he will represent the Mexico U20’s at the Chile World Cup, where he will be competing with talented youngsters from Brazil, Morocco and Spain.

This will likely provide the Rangers scouts with a chance to see Morales’ potential, but with the calibre of nations in his group, he may end the tournament on the radar of a number of European clubs.

If things don’t turn around for Martin following the Hibs victory, and if the next few months see Morales receive more game time, then it’s possible that they roll the dice and bring him in during the winter transfer window.

Prabhsimran 91, Arshdeep's new-ball spell take PBKS towards playoffs

Against LSG, PBKS posted their 11th total of 200-plus in IPL, also aided by middle-order cameos

Alagappan Muthu04-May-20251:30

Is Prabhsimran finally living up to his promise?

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are marching towards a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs, moving up to No. 2 on the table. They dispatched one of their main rivals, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), with a power-packed batting performance, scoring 236 for 5, and winning by 37 runs. The headlinerShreyas Iyer actually wanted to bowl at the toss. But he said he was “up for the competition”, and it seemed so was his team. They hit 34 boundaries in the innings – 16 sixes and 18 fours – en route their 11th total of 200-plus in the IPL. Only Mumbai Indians (MI) have more.Prabhsimran Singh was the architect of this chaos. He attacked nine of his first 15 deliveries, and in that time he could have been dismissed for 22 off 11 balls. But Nicholas Pooran put down a skier. When a similar ball came down just seconds later, Prabhsimran played the same shot and found the straight boundary. He is an intent machine with a very short memory. He made his third fifty on the trot, having come into this season with only four fifty-plus scores in his IPL career. There was a small period when Prabhsimran stalled. He got to 45 off 24 balls. Then made only 8 from the next 11 balls. but made up for that by hitting 38 off his last 13 deliveries.1:48

Rayudu: ‘Maybe Mayank Yadav isn’t ready yet’

The support actsThe batters at the other end matched Prabhsimran’s fire. In fact, every time LSG took a wicket, the new partnership began with a boundary within two deliveries, leaving the visitors with no place to hide. Iyer once again showed he is a changed man. Until IPL 2024, he was striking at 125. Since then, he has been striking at 163. That has not come at the cost of his productivity. He averaged 32 before. Now it’s 44.Shashank Singh played the perfect cameo, 33* off 15 balls, which included a six off Mayank Yadav that legit tried to scale up to one of the Dharamsala mountain tops.LSG’s woesMayank went for 60 runs in his four overs, the joint-worst figures by an LSG bowler in the IPL. Avesh Khan leaked 26 runs in the 19th over, which included three fours and two sixes. Digvesh Rathi went for 40-plus in only one of his first nine matches. In his last two, he has gone for 48 and 46. At a time when they need to be peaking, LSG were floundering. Their best hope was that their top order fired.ESPNcricinfo LtdArshdeep kills the contestMitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Pooran had made 63% of all their team’s runs coming into this game. Arshdeep Singh knocked two of them out in the third over, and returned for the last man standing. LSG were reduced to 38 for 3, their lowest powerplay score this season. Rishabh Pant fell for 18 off 17 balls, his ninth score below 25 in 11 innings. His dismissal was a spectacle. He swung so hard at the ball that he lost control of the bat, which flew out to midwicket while the catch was taken at deep cover.FightbackThere was more than half the innings left to play when ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster suggested that LSG’s chances of winning was down at 0.13%. Guess being 73 for 5 is bad chasing 237. The last specialist batting pair they had – Ayush Badoni (74 off 40 deliveries) and Abdul Samad – delayed the inevitable by putting on a partnership of 81 in 41 balls.

Morocco score twice in the second half to end the United States' run in the U20 World Cup, securing a 3-1 quarterfinal victory

The United States made a deep run into the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, but that came to a halt in the quarterfinals – their fifth tournament in a row reaching that round – as Morocco won 3-1 on Sunday. Despite Cole Campbell's first-half equalizer, Morocco advanced to the semifinals with a second-half own goal from Joshua Wynder and a late counterattack strike.

AFPFirst half ends level

Morocco opened the scoring at the match in Rancagua, Chile through Fouad Zahouani, who found the net to give the North African side an advantage after a tense opening 30 minutes. The U.S. responded just before the halftime when Campbell equalized from the spot.

That came after a lengthy review for a foul, and Ali Maamar was yellow-carded. Campbell's timely goal briefly shifted momentum toward the American side after weathering Morocco's early pressure.

AdvertisementOwn goal tilts match

The decisive moment came after halftime when Yassir Zabiri's shot ricocheted off American defender Wynder into his own net, 20 minutes into the second half. The deflection restored Morocco's lead and forced the U.S. to chase in the second half.

The own goal proved difficult to overcome, even as the U.S. proceeded to dominate proceedings. They threw wave after wave against the Moroccan defense. The U.S. did have their chances, with their best opportunity falling to Luke Brennan, although he pushed his effort well wide.

AFPLate counterattack ends comeback hopes

As the U.S. committed numbers forward in search of the equalizer, Morocco exploited the space behind the defense. In the 87th minute, Gessime Yassine delivered the final blow on a counterattack, scoring Morocco's third goal.

The late goal came as the U.S. had pushed additional players into attacking positions, leaving them vulnerable to Morocco's quick transition play and a quick long-ball down field.

“It is an evolving situation and any decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind,” Arun Dhumal, the IPL chairman, said

PTI09-May-2025Arun Dhumal, the IPL chairman, has said that the IPL is awaiting government directives to decide whether the tournament will continue or not, amid border tensions between India and Pakistan, but “it is on as of now”.”We are reviewing the situation right now.
