Chelsea offered £337k-per-week ex-Aston Villa star with decision made

Agents recently approached Chelsea to offer Enzo Maresca’s side an opportunity to sign one highly-rated attacker, while it is also believed that the Blues are firm admirers of his and were once close to striking a deal.

In recent days, major developments have signalled that the west Londoners are on the cusp of a £110 million double deal.

Chelsea seriously keen on £21m ace who was on verge of joining Sunderland

The Blues are in the race for a “sensational” player, who nearly joined one of their Premier League rivals recently.

After initially seeing three bids rejected by Borussia Dortmund for starlet winger Jamie Gittens, it is now reliably reported that the Englishman is set for a medical, with Chelsea seeing their fourth and final £55 million offer accepted.

Alongside Gittens, breaking news over the weekend from David Ornstein alerted supporters to another headline-grabbing move.

Ornstein broke his exclusive information that Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Brighton star Joao Pedro for £50 million-plus, with fellow trusted transfer reporter, Fabrizio Romano, since sharing that the Brazil international has already had his medical in the USA.

It’s been quite the last 72 hours for Chelsea, who’ve taken their summer spending to around £140 million excluding add-ons, and they were also offered the chance to sign former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran.

The Colombia international, who Chelsea were linked with last summer, joined Al-Nassr in a £65 million deal in January – penning a lucrative £337,000-per-week contract to partner Cristiano Ronaldo up front in the Saudi Pro League.

Jhon Duran

However, it appears Duran is already bored with life in the Middle East, and the 21-year-old is thought to be closing in on a return to Europe just six months after leaving Villa Park.

Duran is reportedly set to join José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe, according to reliable media sources, and a medical has been arranged for the South American to complete his loan move to the Süper Lig.

His move to Chelsea is now off the cards, of course, but it is believed that the player’s representatives did try to secure their client a move to London.

Chelsea offered Jhon Duran with transfer chance turned down

According to journalist Simon Phillips, writing via his Substack, Chelsea politely turned down the chance to sign Duran – with the reporter citing potential attitude concerns in an intriguing update.

Al Nassr's JhonDuranreacts

“Chelsea do still admire Duran as a player, but they have knocked back a chance to try and sign him again this summer, with the 21-year-old’s agent offering him to The Blues,” said Phillips.

“Chelsea politely said no thank you, and sources tell us ‘that ship has sailed’ now.

“We aren’t sure exactly why, but I’d suspect it will still be down to attitude concerns about the player, because Chelsea are still looking for a new striker, although they want one who can play other positions and not really an out-and-out striker.

“We don’t believe Chelsea would change their minds on Duran, but of course, anything can happen in this business. But right now, Chelsea have rejected a chance to go for Duran again and the ship has sailed with no signs of it turning around.”

He is a super-talent who arguably fits Chelsea’s transfer mould of an exciting, young player with bags of potential, but squad harmony is crucial and Duran’s lofty salary made this a pretty tricky one to do.

Colin Ackermann keeps Durham alive as Hampshire thrashed

Veteran’s 96 and Neil Wagner’s all-round excellence consignes Hampshire to a second defeat

ECB Reporters Network09-Aug-2024Colin Ackermann’s recovering 96 plus ex-New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner’s impressive all-round contribution in his first game post-Test retirement earlier this year maintained Durham’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup hopes as they beat Hampshire by 144 runs at Gosforth.Ackermann led the fightback from 183 for 7 to 257 all out, hitting five sixes in 98 balls, while debutant overseas signing Wagner added 33 before taking 2 for 18 from six overs with the new ball as Hampshire slumped to 113 all out.Hampshire started the day second in Group A with four wins from five games but suffered a second defeat, while Durham won for the third time in six to maintain their hopes of a top-three finish for knockout qualification. Seamer Paul Coughlin also struck three times.Wagner, 38-years-old, has signed a short-term deal with Durham for the remainder of the season. This was his first appearance of any kind since his 64th and final Test, at home against South Africa, in February. While Hampshire started well with the ball and in the field, Durham finished strongly with the bat to give themselves a workable total on a competitive pitch at South Northumberland Cricket Club.England Under 19s quick Dom Kelly – 3 for 48 from 10 overs – removed both Durham openers. Michael Jones was caught behind and Ben McKinney sharply caught at cover by captain Nick Gubbins, who had elected to bowl first.Durham skipper Alex Lees was also caught behind off a top-edged sweep at Felix Organ’s off-spin, and the hosts were 56 for 3 in the 16th over.Hampshire’s fielding also contributed to a strong start. The Gubbins catch was followed by the run out of Scott Borthwick at the striker’s end from square-leg, Kyle Abbott with the throw, as the former England man stuttered going for a single.Further departures of Bas de Leede, Hayden Mustard – bowled by Abbott and Kelly – and Coughlin strengthened Hampshire’s hand at 183 for seven in the 42nd over. But Durham’s fightback was equally impressive on a bright but blustery day. Ackermann and Wagner shared an eighth-wicket 62 inside eight overs. The left-handed Wagner struck the ball nicely in a vital 27-ball knock and supported Ackermann, whose innings was well paced.Ackermann reached 50 in as many balls. Of his five sixes, three were hoisted handsomely down the ground off seam late in an innings which ended with him narrowly missing out on a deserved century. Abbott’s figures indicated Durham’s revival. The former South African seamer conceded only 11 runs in his first eight overs but 23 in his final two.In reply, the early signs were good for Hampshire as openers Gubbins and Fletcha Middleton shared 40 inside eight overs. But Wagner battled back, as he has so often done through a stellar career. After Coughlin had Gubbins caught behind, Wagner got Middleton caught at slip and Tom Prest caught behind – both driving – as the visitors slipped to 45 for 3 in the 11th.Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t recover as Coughlin caused further problems. He had Toby Albert caught behind and Felix Organ caught at slip, while Ben Brown drilled de Leede to mid-off in between as Hampshire crumbled to 69 for six in the 17th.From there, their task was forlorn. Off-spinner George Drissell then claimed two of the last four wickets to fall, while Joseph Eckland was brilliantly caught at backward point by a diving McKinney off Daniel Hogg’s seam.De Leede claimed the winning wicket when he bowled Brad Wheal in the 27th over.

Man Utd make bid to sign £44m "king of kings" who scored 25 goals in 24/25

Manchester United have submitted an offer for a former Premier League striker, who has release clause of £44m, according to a report.

Man Utd set sights on Gyokeres alternatives

Fabrizio Romano has now made it clear that Viktor Gyokeres is “only” thinking about signing for Arsenal this summer, with the Swedish striker refusing to turn up for Sporting CP training, meaning Man United will likely have to move on to alternative targets.

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is among them, with Rio Ferdinand recently insisting securing the Nigerian’s signature would soften the blow of missing out on Gyokeres, saying: “He’s a centre-forward, he’s experienced, he knows how to score goals at the top level. I’ve seen today that Galatasaray have put a £50m bid in.

“I mean, £50m to get a top-class striker, one of the top strikers in the world, is absolute peanuts in today’s market. I’ll be disappointed if he goes to Galatasaray for that type of money when Man United are crying out for a No. 9.

“I’ll be disappointed to miss out on Gyokeres if we don’t get a No.9 in. But if we got Osimhen, then I wouldn’t be too concerned.”

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhencelebrates scoring their first goal

According to a report from Italy (via Sport Witness) United are also battling Galatasaray for the signature of a different striker, namely Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, with both clubs making contact over a potential deal.

In fact, it is claimed the Red Devils have even gone as far as submitting a bid, although it is unclear whether they are willing to match the €52m (£44m) release clause in the striker’s Fiorentina contract.

Serie A winners Napoli are also in the race for the centre-forward, who is in two minds about his future, with the next six days said to be ‘key’.

Man Utd set to make £34m bid for "immense" star who Amorim thinks is ideal

The Red Devils plan to make a proposal to sign a defender, with Ruben Amorim believed to be a keen admirer.

ByDominic Lund Jul 9, 2025 "King of kings" Kean has earned big move

The former Everton man’s previous stint in the Premier League didn’t go exactly to plan, scoring just two goals in the competition for the Toffees, but the Italian has really kicked on since returning to his home country.

Last season was the Fiorentina star’s most impressive campaign to date, scoring 25 goals in all competitions as his side finished sixth in the Serie A and reached the semi-final of the Europa Conference League.

Football writer Mina Rzouki was also left impressed by the Italy international’s displays, describing him as a “king of kings” after bagging a brace in a 3-0 victory over Inter Milan back in February.

That said, it would be a big gamble for Man United to sign Kean, given that the forward struggled during his previous spell in England, so it may be wise to turn their attentions to Osimhen, who bagged 37 goals in all competitions last term.

BCCI introduces match fees from IPL 2025

On top of their contract amounts, players now stand to earn INR 7.5 lakh (US$ 9000 approx.) per game as match fees

Nagraj Gollapudi28-Sep-2024Players in IPL 2025 are set to receive a boost to their earnings with the BCCI introducing a match fee of INR 7.5 lakh (US$ 9000 approx.) per game. This means that in addition to the value of players’ contracts, franchises will also pay them for their appearances over the course of the season. BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced this move on X, formerly Twitter, and said each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crore (US$ 1 million approx.) as match fees for the season. This sum will be separate to the franchises’ auction purse. To break up the 12.6 crore: the 12 players named on the team sheet will be paid the additional incentive as match fee, which works out to INR 90 lakh per match. Multiply that that by 14 matches (total number of matches each team plays during the league phase), and it adds up to INR 12.6 crore.

The development, it is learned, is yet to be formally shared with the ten IPL franchises who continue to await the final retention rules ahead of the mega auction in which squads for the 2025 season will be picked. The franchises, though, were appraised of the IPL’s thinking during a meeting with team owners and representatives in July to discuss the retention rules.During these discussions, the IPL is understood to have told the franchises about the need to incentivise players financially considering the teams were getting more money than before. One of the reasons behind the IPL’s proposal was to enhance the earnings of players signed at or near their base price at the auction and retained at the same price even though their stature had grown since. At the 2024 auction, the lowest base price was INR 20 lakh (US$ 24,000 approx.) for uncapped players, and INR 50 lakh (US$ 60,000 approx.) for capped players. An example of a this would be the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Rajat Patidar, who was first signed as an uncapped player for his base price of INR 20 lakh, and then had his salary bumped up to INR 50 lakh when he won his India cap. Patidar played 15 matches during IPL 2024, which means he would have earned an additional INR 1.125 crore for the season if match fees had then been in place. The IPL’s recommendation of paying match fees was countered by several franchises who asked what happens to players on the bench. Until IPL 2024, as part of their contracts, players received a discretionary fee from the franchises’ overall auction purse based on where the team finished the previous season. This was called Incremental Performance pay. One of the suggestions given to the IPL was, instead of paying a match fee, to finalise the amount to be put in the incentive pot, which the franchise could use at its discretion to reward their performers. However, the IPL seems to have stuck to its original plan.

49ers have now "rejected" formal bid for "excellent" 21 y/o Leeds talent

Leeds United have now “rejected” a loan offer for an “excellent” player, according to an update from reliable journalist Beren Cross.

Leeds closing on Paixao and eyeing more signings

It looks as though Igor Paixao is increasingly likely to be the Whites’ latest signing this summer, with a move for the Feyenoord attacker now “fully approved” by the club.

The Brazilian has the ability to be a big hit at Elland Road, providing Leeds with the additional firepower that is badly needed back in the Premier League, having bagged 16 goals and 10 assists in the Eredivisie last season.

Paixao hopefully won’t be the Whites’ only addition between now and the end of the summer transfer window, however, and Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has emerged as an ambitious target who would bring a huge amount of experience and quality to Daniel Farke’s team.

Meanwhile, Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz is also said to be a target for Leeds, with the Brazilian keen on securing a move to Elland Road after an impressive 2024/25 campaign with the Cottagers.

Leeds reject offer for "excellent" attacker

Writing on X on Friday, The Athletic‘s Cross claimed that Leeds and 49ers Enterprises have now “rejected” a loan bid with an option to buy for forward Mateo Joseph from La Liga side Real Betis.

“Leeds United asked Getafe about Christantus Uche a few weeks ago. €25m release clause. Not advanced, but one they have checked on. Betis loan offer, with option, for Mateo Joseph has been rejected. Leeds insist he’s not for sale.”

This is good news from a Leeds perspective, with Joseph a young player with lots of potential – one who Farke has spoken of fondly in the recent past.

“I’m happy with what Mateo’s delivering. As a striker you’re only 100 per cent if you score game after game, but I don’t rate him in output of just goals. His link-up play is excellent and how he holds defenders. For example the third goal [vs Coventry], Joel Piroe, everyone is speaking about Ao Tanaka and the really good assist of Willy [Gnonto]. But I praise Mateo, under pressure keeps the ball against aggressive forward defending to keep possession and bring the midfielders into a good position.”

Granted, Joseph may struggle for regular football in the Premier League, having only started 11 Championship matches last season, so it is understandable why a fresh challenge may appeal to him.

Burnley want £8.6m attacker after scouting trips to see star in person

Burnley now want to sign an £8.6 million attacking midfielder who has been scouted by club chiefs, according to a recent report.

Scott Parker keen to strengthen his midfield options

As the Clarets prepare for life back in the Premier League, club chiefs have been very busy bringing in ten new players, albeit some of whom were already at Turf Moor but have now joined on a permanent basis.

The Lancashire side have added to almost all areas of the team, but with still over a month and a bit left of the transfer window, Scott Parker is keen on adding to his midfield.

Another England international could terminate his contract and join Walker at Burnley

This could be a signing of real intent by the Clarets.

ByHenry Jackson Jul 7, 2025

It emerged from Football Insider at the end of last month that Burnley are interested in signing Tomas Soucek from West Ham United. The Czechia international is out of contract next summer, and the Hammers could be interested in selling him for the right price, as he doesn’t appear to be in the plans of Graham Potter. However, a stumbling block for the Clarets is that the midfielder is on £90,000 a week, which may be too much for them to afford.

West Ham's Tomas Soucek

As well as looking at Soucek, Burnley are also in the race to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has just become a free agent after agreeing to terminate his contract at Besiktas. Teams from the Premier League and the Championship are also interested in signing the England international.

Burnley line up move for Niko Jankovic

Soucek and Chamberlain have now been joined by a new target, as according to Croatian reports relayed by Inside Futbol, Burnley are interested in signing Niko Jankovic after scouting the player extensively.

The Lancashire side are not the only team to have had scouts watching him closely, as Werder Bremen, 1. FC Nurnberg, Dynamo Kyiv, and Hellas Verona are all interested in a possible deal, as well as teams from the MLS.

The 23-year-old is out of contract next summer, but he is considered an important player by Rijeka boss Radomir Dalovic. Therefore, if Jankovic were to leave in this transfer window, it would have to be for an “excellent” offer, as they value the attacking midfielder at around €10 million, which is roughly £8.6 million.

The former Croatia under-21 international joined Rijeka in 2023 on a free transfer, and apart from a spell in Stuttgart’s youth team, he has played in Croatia for his whole career. Should he arrive at Turf Moor, he would have the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Hannibal to compete with for a starting spot in that attacking midfield role.

However, the fact that Jankovic can also play on the left-hand side of midfield as well as anywhere across the frontline means his versatility could see him have a strong impact in Parker’s team throughout the campaign.

Kyle Abbott makes quick work of Worcestershire as Hampshire climb to second

Worcestershire succumb in an hour’s play on final morning as hosts eye runners-up finish

ECB Reporters Network20-Sep-2024Kyle Abbott put Hampshire on course for their best Vitality County Championship since 2005 after beating Worcestershire by 235 runs.Abbott took four of the five remaining Worcestershire wickets to return five for 36 and his fourth five-wicket haul of the season.Hampshire collected maximum points to move above Somerset and into second place, ahead of a trip to Taunton to conclude the season next week, with James Vince’s side last finishing as runners-up under Shane Warne’s captaincy.Worcestershire needed 277 more runs to win on the final day, but only lasted until 11.30am as Abbott ran rampant.Abbott broke through in the sixth over of the day as he skidded a short delivery into Ethan Brookes’ ribs. The first-innings centurion attempted to pull, but it dragged off his glove and to Toby Albert at leg slip – who took a stunning diving catch.Jake Libby scored a patient half-century the previous evening but only added a further two runs before he became Abbott’s second scalp in two overs. The South African found significant inwards movement to take an inside-edge onto pad and to Vince at first slip.Albert produced a second brilliant piece of fielding of the morning as Joe Leach’s penultimate Championship appearance ended in a run-out – after Logan van Beek had turned down a single.Tom Taylor came out to bat at No.11 with a runner, but either side of some Amar Virdi swinging, but only lasted six balls before he edged Abbott behind.Abbott now has 46 scalps in the Championship this season, having completed the game an hour into day four with the hosts bowled out for 158.

New Zealand do the unthinkable and hand India their first 3-0 whitewash at home

Ajaz and Phillips combined for nine wickets to defend 146 despite Pant’s 64 off 57

Sidharth Monga03-Nov-20241:40

Is this the greatest Test upset of the 21st century?

New Zealand withstood the sublime genius of Rishabh Pant to enter uncharted territory: a whitewash of India in India in a series of three Tests or more. Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips combined for nine wickets to defend 146 despite Pant’s 64 off 57 that took them from 29 for 5 to 106 for 6. Ajaz ended up with an 11-wicket haul, becoming the most successful visiting bowler at a single Indian ground.Apart from poor batting, of course, India were also left looking at a contentious DRS call from the third umpire Paul Reiffel. Pant had all the momentum with India taking six singles and two boundaries in the first two overs after lunch, but New Zealand managed to get a decision overturned in what appeared a desperate review. Pant had padded up to Ajaz after being beaten in the air, was given not-out on a bat-pad catch, the third umpire on first viewing seemed to be ruling that the murmur of UltraEdge came from the bat on the pad. Eventually, though, a possible deflection after the sound signature convinced the third umpire to overrule the on-field call.Related

Mitchell: 'We're just a bunch of Kiwis taking on the world'

Rohit: I was not at my best as captain, and with the bat

Take nothing away from Ajaz, though. Born in Mumbai, representing New Zealand, having taken an all-10 on his previous trip, Ajaz was having an ordinary series when he came into the final Test. Even though he found his groove post lunch on day two, taking five wickets in the first innings, even though he had taken three early wickets in the second innings, he was playing a different Test against Pant.At the moment of the Pant wicket, Ajaz had bowled 167 balls to rest of India for 112 runs and nine wickets, but 41 balls to Pant had gone for 75 runs. Pant was in the middle of an audacious effort that defied the treacherous conditions, asked for by the team management and duly delivered to them. The problem with batting on such tracks is the vast margin for errors bowlers have. Even if you bowl a rank long hop, you can protect the boundaries with in-out fields because the ball comes off the pitch at varying pace. Pant’s genius lay in still managing to manipulate shots enough to beat the deep fielders. A swivel almost onto the stumps to hit squarer. A collapse onto the knee to sweep finer. Almost always sweeping himself off his feet to impart that extra bit of power. All this while maintaining an 84% control rate at lunch. When Pant was not on strike, though, Ajaz was unplayable. Ever since lunch on day two, he bowled perfect lengths and carried it into the second innings. He bowled on a good length, drawing forward-defence from the batters without letting them reach the pitch of the ball.Rishabh Pant wasn’t happy with the review that sent him back•BCCIShubman Gill left one alone without covering the line of off, leaving himself open to the vagaries of the pitch. The ball didn’t turn, and took the off stump out. Virat Kohli was a sitting duck as he defended and edged into the big mitts of Dary Mitchell at slip. Ravindra Jadeja, who earlier completed his third career 10-wicket match haul and added 42 with Pant, finally got one that turned too much and was caught at bat-pad. Only Sarfaraz Khan’s wicket was a gift because of the gremlins in the minds. His two-ball innings consisted of two premeditated sweeps to what were otherwise boundary balls. One a single, and the other a full toss helped straight into deep midwicket’s welcoming hands. The openers fell to Matt Henry and Phillips. Rohit Sharma seemed like he wanted to get ahead of New Zealand while the roller’s effect was still fresh after New Zealand refused to get the pitch rolled as their last wicket added three runs to the overnight lead of 143. Two boundaries came, but the third attempt was to a ball not short enough, and Phillips caught the top-edged pull at midwicket.Phillips, who has far exceeded expectations as the second spinner of the side, continued the good work by not bowling any bad balls, and was duly rewarded by trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw on the forward-defence.Pant, though, was playing a different game. His first thought was a boundary, then running, and then defence. He opened his account with a flat six back over Ajaz’s head. That forced Ajaz to bowl quicker and shorter to him, getting India a set of two bye boundaries. His reverse-sweeping got rid of short fine leg, and benefitted him when he top-edged a sweep precisely there. After losing Jadeja, he found the boundary two times in the last two overs before lunch to bring up his fifty and leave India hopeful of a miracle. Post lunch, New Zealand sat back. Six singles in the first over. Two fours in the second. Then came the desperate review, which turned it around for New Zealand again.Tom Blundell found something to celebrate with a superb catch off the R Ashwin glove on the reverse-sweep. Phillips found a moment to celebrate all the hard work when he bowled Akash Deep through the gate. Fittingly, Ajaz ended it all as Washington Sundar tried to slog him with not many options left.

Newcastle: PIF submit offer to sign another Man Utd target alongside Sesko

Newcastle United have submitted an offer to sign another Manchester United target, amid the two clubs’ pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

Newcastle and Man Utd both make Sesko offers

The Magpies haven’t had things all their own way during the summer transfer window, missing out on numerous targets while also facing the possibility of losing star striker Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

Liverpool are keen on signing the Sweden international before the September 1 deadline in a deal that could break transfer records. However, Eddie Howe recently admitted that “nothing has changed” regarding Isak’s future despite him missing pre-season.

“Nothing has changed. It is very much the mindset of business as usual for the players. You don’t get a chance to think of anything other than training or the next game when you come on these tours. The level is so high that we still have to be at our best.

“Naturally, we are going to miss a player of his quality and the group are going to feel that. I cannot sit here and claim that they won’t, but they are a very professional group of players. They are doing brilliantly, as far as I can see, in terms of managing the current situation.”

Newcastle and PIF will need to sign a replacement for Isak before letting him go, and one forward they are battling to sign is Sesko. Both the Magpies and Man Utd have made proposals to the player, who looks set to decide his next move over the coming days.

However, those at St James’ Park and Old Trafford aren’t just battling for Sesko, as per a recent transfer update.

Newcastle have offer for Real Madrid player rejected

According to a report from Spain, both Newcastle and Man Utd are fighting over a move for Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

In fact, it is claimed that Newcastle moved to sign Lunin ‘on loan with an option to buy, but their initial offer was rejected’.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, the possible departure of Altay Bayindir and the need for competition for Andre Onana has seen them eye Lunin, but those at the Bernabeu ‘aren’t considering his departure anytime soon’.

As we know, Newcastle have now got their new goalkeeper in Aaron Ramsdale in a similar deal to the one they proposed to Madrid for Lunin.

Signing from Southampton on a season-long loan with the option to buy, Ramsdale will provide competition to Nick Pope after they missed out on bringing James Trafford to St James’ Park.

Whether or not Newcastle still want Lunin remains to be seen, but it looks as if they recently made their move.
