South Africa seek crucial Super League points against second-string India

The visitors are likely to try and field their strongest attack in what is a must-win series

What should India’s XI for the first ODI be?

Big pictureThe good news is that this series is not without context. South Africa will be playing for World Cup Super League points. And they are desperate to get them. The better news – for them – is that they are doing it against a second-string Indian side that doesn’t have too much riding on these three matches, and could be ripe for the picking. But the bad news? There isn’t any really, except if you were hoping to see India’s best ODI players on display over the next six days. Oh, and there is a lot of rain around – especially for the first two matches – which could put a dampener on the whole thing.According to the visitors’ opening batter Janneman Malan, they are approaching this series as if they are “in a submarine” to try to block out the distractions caused by Mark Boucher’s imminent departure as head coach, the disappointment over captain Temba Bavuma’s non-purchase at the SA20, and the concerns over his form leading onto the T20 World Cup (more on that later).Related

Instead of pondering on all that, South Africa are applying a laser-like focus to the task at hand – getting themselves as close as possible to automatic qualification for the ODI World Cup next year, which will be played in India and where they are getting a small taste of the kind action they don’t want to miss out on.Since full-capacity crowds were allowed back into Indian grounds with South Africa’s visit for five T20Is in June earlier this year, the stadiums have been packed with the noise and colour the Covid-19 pandemic robbed us of. It is those people that India’s coach Rahul Dravid – who will not be in charge of the ODI team as he makes an early exit for Australia – told the broadcasters after the third T20I that India have relished playing for. They have had a glut of white-ball home fixtures – which, you could argue, will be lost in the bigger picture – but India coach Dravid recognised the joy it brought to spectators. Context matters, of course, but cricket can also be just cricket. And it is never really just cricket, is it? Indian fans will remember well that the team was swept 3-0 in a bilateral ODI series against South Africa in February this year, and will wonder what kind of response their team is preparing. South Africa may just emerge from the submarine for long enough to remember that was the last ODI series they won, and try to use it as an inspiration for this one.Shikhar Dhawan has three fifties in his last six ODI innings, but his last hundred came in 2019•AFP/Getty ImagesForm guideIndia WWWWW (Last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa LWLWLIn the spotlightTemba Bavuma needs runs, and needs them quickly as he gears up for the T20 World Cup on the back of a comeback from injury. Until the T20Is on this tour, Bavuma had not played international cricket since April after missing South Africa’s tour of England with an elbow problem and has had a torrid time since returning. With two ducks and a score of 3 from the T20I series, his form is a major concern; but the longer white-ball format may just give him the opportunity to turn things around. With time to build an innings and little pressure to go full tilt from the first ball, Bavuma can concentrate on both the technique and the tempo of his game, and find some confidence ahead of the World Cup.Shikhar Dhawan’s last ODI hundred came 26 innings ago at the 2019 World Cup. In that time, Rohit (2), Rahul (3) and Kohli (2) have scored seven hundreds between them. Shubman Gill established his white-ball credentials in the series against Zimbabwe and West Indies, scoring three half-centuries and a career-best 130 in his last six ODIs for India. Although more than a year away, the 2023 World Cup will be driving Dhawan, and if he wants to be absolutely sure of a spot, a good time to start piling on the runs is now.Team newsThe anticipation around Royal Challengers Bangalore star Rajat Patidar could come to an end if he makes his international debut in this series, but he is competing with Rahul Tripathi, who has been around the national set-up for the past few months. However, all eyes will still be on Deepak Chahar, who has made a successful comeback from a torn quadriceps, and is on the radar as one of Jasprit Bumrah’s replacements in India’s T20 World Cup squad.India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Ishan Kishan, 5 Sanju Samson (wk), 6 Rahul Tripathi/Rajat Patidar, 7 Shardul Thakur, 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Ravi Bishnoi, 11 Mohammed SirajAndile Phehlukwayo could come into contention for the allrounder’s spot•Getty ImagesSouth Africa are not deploying any of their players to Australia for the T20 World Cup early, so will have their full-strength squad at their disposal. Bavuma is expected to be a straight swap for the injured Rassie van der Dussen from the England series, with the rest of the middle order – Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller – likely to remain consistent.Andile Phehlukwayo and Marco Jansen, both T20 World Cup squad reserves, could come into contention for the allrounder’s spot, with South Africa likely to try and field their strongest attack in what is a must-win series.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Temba Bavuma, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo/Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Anrich Nortje/Marco Jansen, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Kagiso RabadaPitch and conditionsNeither team has ever played an ODI at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, with the majority of its international fixtures being between Afghanistan and West Indies in 2019. There, in three ODIs, the average first innings score was 230, which suggests the ground may not support quick scoring. However, India have played two T20Is at the ground and put up totals of 195 and 199, which may indicate differently. It has been raining significantly in Lucknow, and showers are expected for most of the day.Stats and trivia South Africa lie in 11th place on the World Cup Super League points table, with four victories and 49 points from 13 games so far. After forfeiting the three-match series in Australia, the maximum number of points available to them from here is 80: 30 vs India, 30 vs England and 20 vs Netherlands. That means if they win all their remaining matches – and have no over-rate violations which result in a points penalty – they will end up on a total of 129 points. England, Australia, Bangladesh and Pakistan already have 120, with six matches left to play. South Africa and India were due to play in Lucknow in March 2020 but the match was cancelled as the Covid-19 pandemic began to impact the world and thus the sport. The stadium has hosted three other ODIs – all between Afghanistan and West Indies in 2019.Quotes”Everyone knows how important the next eight games are for the Proteas in the ODI format. We are trying to maximise the points. The World Cup is in India. It’s nice to get good prep and put in good performances to hopefully join the tournament.”

He’s now outscoring Bowen & Kudus: West Ham nearly signed "monster" striker

West Ham are one of the lower-scoring sides in the Premier League this season, scoring 29 goals in 24 games so far.

Graham Potter’s side are averaging 13.8 shots per game which is the ninth highest in the division but have only generated 35.57 expected goals (xG) so far this term, ranking them 15th in the division in this metric.

West Ham United manager GrahamPotterreacts after the match

This shows West Ham are not only creating poorer value shots than other teams, but they are also not finishing at a good enough level to offset that, underperforming their xG by -6.57.

The Hammers have been without a true striker for much of the season, with injuries to Michail Antonio and summer signing, Niclas Füllkrug, leaving much of the pressure on Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus once again.

Jarrod Bowen's & Mohammed Kudus' amazing partnership at West Ham

Last campaign, Bowen was on fire, making 44 appearances scoring 20 goals, providing ten assists and totaling 2,842 minutes, whilst Kudus made 45 appearances in his debut season, scoring 14 goals, providing six assists and totaling 3,511 minutes played.

Much of the attacking onus fell on the pair, with Bowen making 22 appearances as a centre-forward, showing the Hammers lack of a focal point.

This has carried over into this campaign, but the pair are struggling to have the same impact, providing less output for the side.

This season, Bowen has made 22 appearances scoring seven goals and providing four assists, whilst Kudus has appeared in 22 matches, netting just three times and supplying two assists.

The pair could clearly use a proven centre-forward to ease their pressure, and David Moyes reportedly wanted a certain striker who could have done just that back in 2023.

West Ham missed out on amazing striker

It’s safe to say that West Ham’s luck in the striker market has been pretty appalling over the last few years.

From the likes of Gianluca Scamacca and Albian Ajeti to Fullkrug in the present day, nothing seems to quite click in the central attacking spot in the team. However, that could have been oh-so different two years ago.

Gianluca Scamacca celebrates a goal for West Ham.

Indeed, in the 2023 summer transfer window, Moyes and West Ham were reportedly very interested in Coventry striker, Viktor Gyokeres, with the manager personally scouting him on several occasions in the EFL.

However, when the 2023 summer window rolled around, Gyokeres made a shock £20m move to Portuguese giants, Sporting.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal

Since joining the club, the Sweden international has been nothing short of ridiculous having made 85 appearances, scoring 77 goals and providing 22 assists in 6,924 minutes played. The 26-year-old is now on 34 goals in 35 matches this term and is being touted as a £62.5m striker according to Transfermarkt, which would be a pretty sizable profit for Sporting.

When comparing Gyokeres’s underlying metrics with both Bowen and Kudus, you can clearly see the extra level of clinical finishing he would have provided.

He has a higher goals/shot ratio than both combined, scoring 1.20 goals per 90 and generating a higher xG per 90 than the Hammers wingers combined.

Gyokeres has been described as a ball-striking “monster” by Ben Mattinson, which has been further proven with his goal-scoring record in Portugal.

This is just one of the 26-year-old’s many elite qualities, including his ability to run the channels and manipulate the ball inside the box.

A front line consisting of Gyokeres, Bowen and Kudus could have been one of the most threatening in the Premier League, especially under Moyes in transition moments, playing in a deeper block and looking to hit teams on the break.

While McTominay did not contribute with a goal or an assist, he had an impressive outing for his side, which garnered praise from the Italian media.

Napoli fans wholeheartedly praised the 28-year-old's performance as they hailed the midfielder on social media.

An X handle with the name @victorersantos wrote: "What a great rehearsed play by Napoli. McTominay not only distracts the Lecce goalkeeper, but also reduces his field of vision on the wall."

Guido Olivares declared McTominay as the MVP as the post read: "If we win it, the MVP is McTominay hands down."

First Test could be delayed by 24 hours after illness sweeps through England squad

The issue is thought to be a virus or bug rather than food poisoning, as half of England’s playing squad in Pakistan falls ill

Vithushan Ehantharajah30-Nov-2022England and Pakistan officials are in discussions about a possible 24-hour delay to the first Test in Pakistan, after 13 to 14 members of the England squad – including half the 16-man playing pool – were struck down by illness on Wednesday. The issue is thought to be a virus or bug rather than food poisoning, with England taking particular care over what they eat with the help of a chef, Omar Meziane, who has travelled with the team for this tour. However, on Tuesday, some players reported feeling unwell and were told to stay in their rooms to limit the risk of spreading the virus.Ben Stokes, England captain, and James Anderson are understood to be two of those affected. Jack Leach, who lives with Crohn’s disease and takes immunosuppressant medication, which weakens his immune system, is suffering from symptoms but is said to be fine. Joe Root had symptoms on Tuesday but recovered well enough to train on Wednesday. Likewise, Mark Wood, who was already set to miss the first Test through injury, has shown signs of improvement after missing training on Tuesday and being confined to his room.Related

England in Pakistan: A history of controversy

An ECB spokesperson confirmed that the illnesses were not Covid-19 related, with players experiencing vomiting and diarrhoea. There is a hope the virus passes in 24 hours, though with the first of the three-match series due to begin in Rawalpindi on Thursday, England’s chances of getting off to a strong start have been severely hampered.Root, speaking to the media on Wednesday, acknowledged that discussions were underway about a rearranged start to the match, with officials from the two boards – PCB chairman Ramiz Raja, and the ECB’s Rob Key and Neil Snowball – meeting to consider all options. A final decision is expected to rest with the England team doctors, who are due to assess the players by 8am local time, two hours before the scheduled start of play. With the hours of play already cramped by the fast-setting winter sun, a delayed start to Thursday’s play has already been ruled out. The playing conditions for the World Test Championship require all matches to be staged across a five-day window, therefore ICC dispension will be required if the game is to be rearranged as a four-day Test. However, an ECB spokesperson confirmed that play would not have got underway in the current circumstances.”It is unfortunate we are in this situation, but we don’t think it is food-related,” Root said. “I don’t think there is any correlation between the two and in fact the chef is ill as well, so I don’t think it is the food.”The thing is we have been trying to bring a chef away with us for a couple of years now. This is the first opportunity we have had to do it. Look at all the other international sporting teams around, even Premier League and Championship teams have their own chef, so we think from a nutrition and performance side of things, we are trying to do everything we can to optimise ourselves and be in the right position to perform.”Joe Root talks to media ahead of the First Test in Rawalpindi•Getty ImagesApart from Root, only Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook of the players named in the starting XI, and Keaton Jennings trained at the ground on Wednesday in a session that was anyway optional before the bug spread. The team named by Stokes on Tuesday, with a debut for Liam Livingstone and a return to the fold for opener Ben Duckett, may now have a very different look.”There’s going to have to be Marcus Trescothick, Rob Key and Brendon McCullum as the new top three for tomorrow,” Root joked. “As far as I’m aware there are a few guys not feeling 100 percent but – I didn’t feel great yesterday but I woke up better today – so hopefully it’s just a 24-hour virus and I don’t think it’s food poisoning or Covid or anything like that.”I think it’s just one of those things that we’ve unfortunately picked up as a group – we’ve tried to do absolutely everything, we’ve prepared really well for this game and sometimes life throws things at you but we’ll do everything we can to be right tomorrow and be right and ready to go.”Asked if he believed everyone will be fit for selection come Thursday morning, Root said: “It’s hard to say, I’ve not seen anyone this morning, we’ve literally got straight on the bus so the guys will do everything we can to be right in that aspect, so time will tell really.”The outbreak has taken place at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad, where both England and Pakistan have been staying along with members of the UK media. England have taken over a wing of the second floor and an executive lounge on the sixth floor, which is operating as their team room. They have not been restricted in their movements around the hotel, beyond being able to leave the heavily-guarded 14-acre complex.

This is not the first time England have been struck down by illness at the start of a tour recently. On the 2019-20 tour of South Africa, another bug coursed through the squad in the lead-up and during their Boxing Day Test in Pretoria, with a number of players having to leave the field of play to use the toilet and take on fluids in separate changing rooms away from the group. They went on to lose the Test. Such was the rate of spread of this particular virus that many England players wondered if they were struck by an early version of Covid-19. But, just as it is now, the symptoms were very different.”I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It is horrible,” Root said. “Running on and off the field all the time. But sometimes it is part and parcel of where you are at as a team. That [Centurion 2019] was very unfortunate because a lot of us got ill during the Test match, not going into the game. But hopefully it is not something we have to contend with, and everyone will turn up well tomorrow and we can enjoy what is an exciting series and have cricket as a talking point.”Root added that he was not aware if any reinforcements were being discussed, with the Lions squad having flown home from Abu Dhabi at the end of last week’s warm-up with the Test squad, and said that he was not expecting to stand in as captain if Stokes is not passed fit.”No, I don’t think so,” he said. “Ollie Pope did it the other day and he’d do a great job, so we’ll see. Hopefully it isn’t a conversation we need to have.”It is frustrating. Today is generally an optional session anyway, so a few of the guys wouldn’t have come in anyway. There is not much you can do, other than try to do the right things and hydrate yourself, and do the things away from the game that will serve you well overnight in preparation for tomorrow.”It is where we are at as a team. Sometimes this happens, and when we’re all tight together in the same hotel, then it can spread around. We’ve done what we can to try and mitigate that, and we’ll see how we shape up tomorrow. It is part and parcel of being on tour. Sometimes these things get thrown at you and that is why you have 15 guys here, so in case of injury or illness you are ready to go.”

Tottenham now join the race to sign in-demand £50m "monster" this summer

With the summer transfer window approaching, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly joined the race to sign an impressive winger who’s worth as much as £50m this summer.

Tottenham transfer news

There was a stage in which Ange Postecoglou looked only likely to take Spurs onwards and upwards after in a season controlled by injuries and his own stubbornness over tactical change, those days seem long gone for now. Now, in the Australian’s most important summer in charge yet, the Lilywhites must get things right if they want to earn their way back to Champions League qualification.

On that front, the transfer rumours have already been coming thick and fast. Names such as Nico Paz have particularly threatened to steal the headlines in the last week in what would see Spurs land yet another rising star.

Meanwhile, those in North London have also reportedly set their sights on an attacking option slightly closer to home. According to reports in Spain, Tottenham have now joined the race to sign Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, who value their winger at a hefty €60m (£50m) this summer.

Tottenham make contact to sign 11-goal striker alongside another sensation

They’re on the rise…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 28, 2025

Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time that Spurs and the Cherries have done business. Just over a year ago, it was Dominic Solanke who the Lilywhites were attempting to sign with what proved to be a successful £65m bid. Now, one season later, they could return to the Vitality Stadium and secure another impressive attacking star.

With London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea also among those interested in Semenyo, however, Spurs face an uphill battle if they want to lure the winger into a summer switch.

"Monster" Semenyo has earned big move

Whilst there’s no doubt that Semenyo has earned the chance to play for a top six club in the Premier League, the irony must not be lost that he’d sooner get that at Bournemouth than at Spurs given the current standings. But that should not discourage the North London club from making their move and signing, as analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed the winger, a “duel monster”.

He’s not bad in front of goal, either. One of many Bournemouth stars to enjoy an excellent campaign, Semenyo has found the back of the net nine times in all competitions whilst providing a further five assists.

Helping the Cherries into seventh in the Premier League, the 25-year-old looks likely to be one to watch when the transfer window arrives and Spurs potentially come calling alongside others.

BCCI invites 'reputed entities' to bid for women's IPL teams

The inaugural edition of the tournament is expected to take place in March this year

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jan-2023The BCCI has invited applications for “the right to own and operate” teams at the inaugural women’s IPL, which is expected to run from March 3-26.A press statement from the BCCI on Tuesday asked for “reputed entities” to make a non-refundable payment of INR 5 lakh (USD 6000 approx.) by January 21 to procure the “invitation to tender”, which details the eligibility criteria for potential buyers. The final discretion on who gets to bid lies with the BCCI, however, following a technical evaluation process. In February last year, then BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said that the women’s IPL would get off the ground in 2023. In August, the BCCI zeroed in on a window for March. Subsequently, the BCCI advanced the women’s domestic calendar, which generally runs from November to April, to accommodate the Women’s IPL.Related

Calls for the Women’s IPL to kick off have been gaining steam since India’s runners-up finish at the 50-over World Cup in 2017. When they reached the finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020, it gained further momentum before Covid-19 stalled women’s cricket, and the sport in general.Since 2018, the BCCI had been conducting the Women’s T20 Challenge to run alongside the IPL in a bid to test the waters before expanding. A number of times, the previous administration headed by Ganguly had cited a lack of depth in players as an obstacle in conducting a full-fledged tournament.Ever since the formal announcement was made about starting the WIPL, a number of existing IPL teams have been sending out talent scouts to identify players they can potentially sign for the women’s tournament should they be awarded the rights to own a franchise. Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings are all believed to be interested in owning a WIPL team.Last month, the BCCI had invited bids for media rights from 2023-27 for the proposed five-team tournament. As per media reports, as many as 10 entities picked up the media rights tender documents. All the entities who clear BCCI’s screening process will be allowed to place their closed bids on January 12.

Brits Abroad: Harry Kane finally lifts his first trophy – but Jude Bellingham, Scott McTominay and Jordan Henderson suffer blows in bids for their own league titles

The England captain was finally able to learn what lifting silverware feels like, but it proved to be a tough weekend for some of his fellow expats

Saturday May 10, 2025: The day Harry Kane was finally able to loft a trophy above his head. The England captain and his Bayern Munich team-mates enjoyed celebrating regaining what they believe is rightfully theirs over the weekend, though Kane (and Eric Dier) might not be alone among the British stars who ply their trade abroad in earning silverware before the season is out.

A host of English and Scottish players find themselves in title fights that look likely to go down to the wire, while others are looking to earn themselves European qualification for the 2025-26 campaign. Some also have cup finals to look forward to after what has been a memorable season for many Brits who have opted to move overseas in recent years.

So how did our Brits abroad fare over the weekend? GOAL has the lowdown on the biggest stories…

Getty Images SportBeer showers for Kane

It is tradition that the Bundesliga champions spend much of their title celebrations drenching one another in beer, and Bayern's festivities were no different on Saturday as they first saw off Borussia Monchengladbach before getting to the real important stuff and began throwing alcohol around the Allianz Arena. Having seen his trophy curse lifted last week, Kane threw himself into the party atmosphere, earning himself a "wet and freezing" shower in the process.

For what it's worth, it should be noted that Kane took his Bundesliga goal tally for the season to 25 as he opened the scoring against Gladbach with a flicked header that diverted Michael Olise's shot into the back of the net, and he will be hoping to add to that on the final day of the campaign at Hoffenheim next week. For now, though, the Tottenham icon can be forgiven a day or two off to recover from a well-earned blowout.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportBellingham loses control of El Clasico

Last season, Jude Bellingham was the king of El Clasico. The England midfielder scored three goals across Real Madrid's two La Liga meetings with Barcelona, including stoppage-time winners in both games. This season, though, the story has been different.

Sunday's 4-3 win for Barca was their fourth victory out of four against their great rivals in 2024-25, as the Blaugrana also took their tally of goals for the year against Los Blancos to 16 while stretching their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points with just three games left to play. Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick kept the scoreline close, but Carlo Ancelotti's side were again largely outclassed by the champions-elect.

For Bellingham, it proved a day to forget, as he was largely bypassed in midfield due to most of Madrid's counter-attacks coming via wide areas. He completed just 24 passes in the whole game, while singled Bellingham out for being "completely out of control and unable to participate in possession." Fellow Spanish newspaper were even harsher with their analysis, as they wrote that the ex-Borussia Dortmund star "gave the impression that he'd given up physically and mentally".

It was reported last week that Bellingham will finally undergo shoulder surgery this summer to rectify the injury issue that has seemingly limited him for much of the campaign. If Sunday's performance was anything to go by, that can't come a moment too soon.

Getty Images SportAssist-king McTominay suffers Scudetto setback

Another week, another Player of the Match award for Scott McTominay. The Scotland international was again singled out as the outstanding performer for Napoli on Sunday, but his display wasn't enough to secure a fifth-successive victory for Antonio Conte's side as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Genoa.

Having scored five goals across those previous four wins, former Manchester United midfielder McTominay tried his hand at assisting this time around, and did so with devastating effect as he twice played excellent passes into the penalty area from which Romelu Lukaku and Giacomo Raspadori were able to score. However, Genoa twice pegged the Serie A leaders back, meaning Napoli now sit just one point clear of Inter at the summit with two games left to play.

McTominay, who was hailed by for showing "flashes of genius" during Sunday's game, was keen to stress the importance of keeping a clear head through the final fortnight as he told at full-time: "We have to stay calm, this is not the time to panic… It's important to stay calm, keep doing what we're doing, then see where the end of the season gets us."

Having started the season in electric fashion, the England international was then singled out by manager Roberto De Zerbi for blame as the club suffered a mid-season slump in form. However, things seem to have been patched up between Greenwood and his Italian coach, and on Saturday they were both able to celebrate as OM secured their return to the Champions League after two seasons outside of Europe's premier club competition.

Greenwood was the man who made it happen, too. With five minutes left against relegation-threatened Le Havre, Marseille were being held to a 1-1 draw, only for the ex-Manchester United forward to cut inside onto his left foot and unleash a shot from 20 yards that arrowed into the bottom corner. Amine Gouiri then added some gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time, but it was Greenwood's goal that had secured a spot in Ligue 1's top four.

Marseille will now be looking to secure second place behind Paris Saint-Germain when they host Rennes on the final day of the season this coming Saturday, while Greenwood's 19th goal of the season leaves him two behind Ligue 1 top scorer Ousmane Dembele in the race for the Golden Boot.

Talks progressing over new contract for £11.4m-a-year Liverpool superstar

Talks are progressing between Liverpool and one of their star men over a new contract, with a deal now said to be ‘close’, according to a recent report.

Liverpool's summer transfer plans

Arne Slot and co. still have so much of their attention on the pitch as they look to wrap up the Premier League title, with the Reds also into the last 16 of the Champions League and among the favourites to win that competition as well, with a League Cup final to play next month too.

But as the season progresses it means the summer transfer window is getting ever closer and those high up at Anfield must already have their eyes there, as they have some big decisions to make over key players.

One player whose future is up in the air is of course Mohamed Salah, and Liverpool are being linked with a move for Lamine Yamal, which would be quite a shock but possible due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties, which will force them to sell at least one or two key men this summer.

Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal

It’s been reported that Liverpool are “above all” the other Premier League teams in the race to sign Yamal, but face competition from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, who are also watching on.

The Reds are among the teams who are dreaming of signing the 17-year-old at the end of the season, but Barcelona have no plans to sell their superstar if they don’t absolutely have to.

In defence, with questions over the future of Virgil van Dijk, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool are prioritising signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window in order to add more depth whether the Dutchman stays or gos.

Talks progressing over new contract for Liverpool superstar

While the Premier League leaders begin the search for a new centre-back, according to a report from Spain, Liverpool are now close to agreeing a new contract with Van Dijk after talks progressed in recent weeks.

The report states that the Reds’ intentions are clear – they want the Netherlands international to remain at the club. Talks between the player and the club have now ‘progressed’ to a point that it is being reported that a deal is ‘close’ to being agreed, with the captain ‘considering’ the latest offer.

It is reported that Liverpool believes their captain still has a lot to offer at the age of 33, and his leadership and experience mean he can remain a key figure in the team. They consider the renewal of Van Dijk’s contract a priority as they try to maintain stability in the defence during a summer where there could be a lot of change. For Van Dijk, while he has offers from elsewhere, he feels comfortable at Liverpool and hasn’t ruled out staying for another season.

The Dutchman currently earns £11,440,000 a year at Anfield, making him the second-highest earner at the club behind Salah. Despite being at the latter end of his career, Van Dijk still remains a key player for Liverpool and Slot, and with new arrivals expected in defence over the summer, keeping Van Dijk makes more sense for the new signings, as he can help them settle in with his experience and defensive qualities.

Worcestershire sign Michael Bracewell to plug Moeen Ali-shaped hole in T20 Blast side

Spin-bowling allrounder expected to play majority of 2023 Blast season

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Dec-2022Michael Bracewell has signed a contract with Worcestershire for the Vitality Blast, effectively replacing Moeen Ali in their T20 side.Moeen has joined Warwickshire on a three-year contract and his departure left a hole in Worcestershire’s top order for a left-handed batter and offspinner.Bracewell, the late-blooming allrounder who has made his New Zealand debuts in all three formats this year, has signed a contract that will see him play county cricket for the first time in the 2023 Blast.Worcestershire did not specify his availability but he is expected to be available for the majority of the tournament. He is likely to spend April and May in the subcontinent – either in Pakistan for a white-ball tour, or in India if he is picked in Friday’s IPL auction – with Worcestershire’s first Blast fixture on May 24.Alan Richardson, Worcestershire’s head coach, said: “It’s always good to have someone of his calibre, but the fact he is a true allrounder means we are really getting two players.”Michael’s international white-ball cricket record is outstanding, but he also has a very healthy first-class record and will offer great experience.”Bracewell will extend a recent relationship between Worcestershire and New Zealand players, with Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Martin Guptill, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner among the Kiwis to have spent time at New Road in recent seasons.Worcestershire will hope he can play a part in reviving their T20 fortunes.
