Spurs may sell Lamela this summer

Writing on Twitter, sharing his piece for football.london, reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold has listed the Tottenham Hotspur players who ‘could be sold’ this summer as part of a rebuild – with winger Erik Lamela making the list.

The Lowdown: Servant to Spurs…

Lamela signed for Spurs as a member of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ brought in to replace Gareth Bale after he completed his sensational £85 million move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2013.

Since then, the Argentine has stood out as the longest serving member of that player influx and has gone to make 257 appearances for Spurs in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

He has scored 37 goals and has assisted his teammates 47 times over this period (Transfermarkt), but a combination of disciplinary issues and a poor injury record have somewhat marred his stay in north London.

The Latest: Lamela ‘could be sold’…

Spurs need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy in a difficult market, especially considering their documented financial troubles, and Gold has revealed that Lamela ‘could be sold’ this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-things-spurry/” title=”Spurs news and gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Dele Alli, Lucas Moura, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Moussa Sissoko, Juan Foyth, Harry Winks, Serge Aurier and a centre-back could also be offloaded, according to the football.london journalist.

Lamela is apparently a ‘popular figure’ within Tottenham and ‘loves’ the club himself, but his fairly lofty salary combined with a lack of Premier League starts this season could mean his eight-year stay in the English capital may be coming to an end.

The Verdict: Time to go…

There have been points over 2020/2021 where Lamela showcased his true quality, most notably the sensational rabona against Arsenal during Spurs’ 2-1 north London derby loss.

However, during that same game, the 29-year-old was sent off for a second yellow card after aggressively fending off Kieran Tierney – perhaps summing up his Tottenham career overall.

It’s no doubt that the Argentine can turn it on, as evident by former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson calling him a ‘fantastic player’ earlier this season (Football Insider), but it may be time for Lamela to be shown the door.

Conte "likely" to be next Spurs boss

It seems that Tottenham Hotspur have finally got their man…

What’s the word?

According to the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold at football.london, former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is “looking likely” to become the next manager of Spurs following talks with the club.

It’s claimed that the North Londoners pushed hard to bring Mauricio Pochettino back to the club from Paris Saint-Germain but the Ligue 1 giants did not want to lose him, and the 51-year-old was an appealing candidate following his departure from Inter Milan.

Speaking on Twitter on Wednesday evening, the reporter wrote:

“Now looking likely that Antonio Conte will become the next Tottenham boss. Spurs pushed hard to try to bring Mauricio Pochettino back but PSG have fought hard to keep him.

“Conte is one of the top managers in the world and it’s going to be fascinating to see how he will fit into a very different environment at Spurs than he’s previously had elsewhere.

“Conte suddenly becoming a free agent made him a very attractive prospect for Levy, but if he puts pen to paper as expected it’ll be intriguing to see how the two men gel, whether he fits that Levy DNA statement and whether he can settle at Spurs for longer than elsewhere.”

A new era?

It has been nearly seven weeks since Jose Mourinho was sacked from the club, so this news should be rather exciting for many in N17 as it appears that they have finally got their next manager – and not to mention Conte’s successful coaching career.

The Italian has not only cleaned up the Special One’s mess before at Chelsea but across four different clubs, he has amassed nine major trophies, including a Premier League title and an FA Cup at Stamford Bridge.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

Mourinho left the Blues just before they recorded their worst-ever finish since 1996 and in the very next season, Conte delivered the title before earning his second piece of silverware a season later.

His latest success was steering Inter Milan to their first Serie A triumph in 11 years – a familiar situation to the one at Spurs, as they are without a trophy since 2008, so that should only encourage the Lilywhites faithful even more.

Conte has been likened to Sir Alex Ferguson in the past, whilst during his time in England, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola dubbed him a “tactical master” and suggested that he would leave his mark on the English game.

After leaving his post at the San Siro, plenty of supporters were quick to jump on the bandwagon of Spurs potentially appointing the 51-year-old.

As relayed by This is Futbol, one fan claimed it was the “best possible appointment”, whilst another pleaded for it to be true, with a further member of the Tottenham fanbase suggesting he is “what every Spurs fan should want.”

Well, as per Gold, it certainly seems like Conte will be in the dugout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, barring any late developments, so these Spurs fans and many more should be buzzing with the news.

The North London giants are certainly about to embark on an exciting new era, and the sooner the Italian is in place, the sooner they can crack on with plans to get this club back on the right path.

Lucky escape for Mohammedan

Though it was a low-scoring match, yet it was enthralling and Mohammedan Sporting took the revenge by defeating Victoria Club by 2 wickets in a nail-biting affair of GrameenPhone Premier League match held at BNS today

Shahryar Khan14-May-2002Though it was a low-scoring match, yet it was enthralling and Mohammedan Sporting took the revenge by defeating Victoria Club by 2 wickets in a nail-biting affair of GrameenPhone Premier League match held at BNS today. Several players from both sides played their hearts out, but at the end Steve Tikolo became the man-of-the-match. The Kenyan made a remarkable contribution by capturing 3 vital Victoria wickets and made 58 valuable runs when Mohammedan was struggling.Victoria’s 179 was not a good target at all, not at least on this flat track, but Manjural Islam, Saiful Islam and Masudur Rahman made it difficult for the batsmen. Mohammedan lost Rashedul (10) on 12 and Habibul Bashar (5) on 23; the later was trapped lbw by left-arm pacer Manjural Isalm.Shabbir Khan and Steve Tikolo started off for a partnership that added 55 runs, but Sanwar Hossain, the batsman at number five, wasted too many balls to manage his 20. Sanwar faced 60 balls to do that, which made Mohammedan’s easy task daunting. Tikolo was the fifth man to go, got by with 58 off 77 balls with the help of 5 entertaining boundaries, leaving his club reeling on 113 for 4.The quick fall of Minhajul Abedin (4) and Mohammed Rafique (2) put more pressure on injured Ehsanul Haq (Batted at number seven today and took Habibul Bashar as a runner) and stumper Anwar Hossain. However, Ehsanul managed to get few boundaries at the end (Particularly in the 48th over) before being run-out. His cameo 34 included 4 boundaries; all came in time of urgency. Anwar Hossain sent the ball to backward point to make the wining run in the second ball of the 50th over, thus, secured his team’s full points in this vital match.Victoria had to bowl without Alok Kapali, the reputed leggie, who was hurt while playing a rising ball off Mohammed Rafique that hit his nose. Masudur Rahman claimed 2 wickets for 22 in his tight spell while Manjural (2/39) and Saiful (2/24) had impressive spells too.Victoria Sporting, lost the toss to Minhajul Abedin, made a good recovery from the early loss of Parvej Ahmed (10), as Al-Sahariar and Jahangir Alam batted prudently and steadily. Al-Sahariar went well with his good form, hit another good knock (51) off 67 balls, well arranged with 4 shots to the rope.Victoria could have gone further, had Rashed Hanif (8) stayed in the crease. But, the left-handed Pakistani got run-out from a horrible mix-up where he had none but himself to blame. Skipper Masud (10) and Sajjad Ahmed (2) became the victims of Tikolo (Had an impressive figure of 3/22 today).Alok Kapali (26) and Masudur Rahman (27) chipped in with a couple of cameos at the end and Victoria ended up with 179 on their board. Taposh (2/39) and Shafiuddin Ahmed (2/28) were the other successful duo for Mohammedan.

Darren Gough: I'm fit and I'm leaner

Darren Gough has declared himself fit to play for England against Sri Lanka at Headingley in the fourth match of the NatWest triangular series

Stephen Lamb01-Jul-2002Darren Gough has declared himself fit to play for England against Sri Lanka at Headingley in the fourth match of the NatWest triangular series. The Yorkshire fast bowler has been included in the England squad for the game after defying gloomy predictions about his fitness as recently as last week.”I’ve done all the stuff I’ve been asked to do, I’ve played, I’ve fielded andI’ve been bowling now every day for the last two weeks apart from a littlesetback I had on Monday when I decided to pull myself out of a game,” Gough said.”I’m going to have a little bit of discomfort for the next month to six weeks- when you come back from any surgery you’re going to get that – but Englandhave asked me if I’m fit and I told them I was so now it’s up to them whether Iplay or not.”Gough sustained the injury to his right knee in the final one-day internationalagainst New Zealand in Dunedin last February. Since then he has had two operations, and he admitted to worries about whether he would ever make an England return.”I think everyone worries they won’t get back when they have injuries,” he said.”I had plenty of time to get fit for the start of the season and I workedreally hard, but I probably tried to get back a little too quickly first time.”This time I’ve been held back a lot. They’ve sent me away to Lanzarote so Iwouldn’t be rushed and I trained there three times a day, and that’s brought meforward a couple of weeks in my recovery.”He also believes he is leaner than he has been at times in the past. “I’m lighter now than I was in the winter and lighter than I was last season.Aerobically I’m fit and I’m a lot stronger than I’ve been before because ofthe weight programmes I’ve been doing on my upper body.”People have seen me running around Old Trafford and think I’ve put on weightbut I had several sweaters on and I’m stronger and fitter because all my testswith England have proved that – if there was a problem I think England wouldhave been the first to tell me, and I’ve heard nothing from them.Gough is not too worried about making his comeback against world-class opposition. “People who know me and the way I bowl will know that I’m not one of those mechanical bowlers who have about 10 different trigger points – I just run up and bowl as fast as I can,” he said.”It’s going to be a bit different playing a one-day international againstworld-class players and you can go around the park against players like that, but I’m totally confident of not spraying down both sides of the wicket if Iplay.”I’ve only played one second team game, but they must have faith in meotherwise they wouldn’t have selected me in the squad.”

Crystal Palace: Eagles rival Tottenham for Saša Lukić

Crystal Palace are rumoured to have made a move for Torino midfielder Saša Lukić, who is also a Tottenham Hotspur target, as reported by Spurs Web [via Gianluca di Marzio].

The Lowdown: Another solid season for Lukić in Italy

Enjoying another accomplished season in Serie A at Torino, the Serbia international has made 32 appearances for the Turin-based club, registering three goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Also making 18 appearances for his country [Transfermarkt], the 24-year-old has an insatiable appetite to initiate build up play through intricate midfield passes.

Illustrated by his passing accuracy across the 2020/21 season of 81% [WhoScored] for a team who finished 17th in Serie A, it is easy to see why clubs would be interested in his services. That figure would put him joint-seventh among Palace’s squad and above one Wilfried Zaha, whose passing accuracy for the season came in at 78.3% [WhoScored].

Initially courted by Spurs back in March [The Sun], it now seems that Crystal Palace may be in pole position for his signature.

The Latest: Crystal Palace rivalling Spurs for the Serbian international, Spartak Moscow also keen

Looking to rebuild after the departure of Roy Hodgson, Palace are set to bid for Lukić, who is quoted as being potentially available for £8.5m this summer [Spurs Web].

Throwing the cat even further amongst the pigeons, Di Marzio claimed that Selhurst Park could be of Lukić’s likely destinations this transfer window. Spartak Moscow have also been credited with an interest in the former Levante man [Gianluca di Marzio].

The Verdict: Lukić would be a fantastic start to the Palace rebuild

Acquiring the Torino midfielder would appear to be a huge coup for the south Londoners if they can beat their capital rivals to his signature. In need of quality additions as they look towards 2021/22, Lukić could be a Premier League mainstay for years to come.

Beating off interest from Tottenham may also sweeten any prospective arrival. As they start to replenish an ageing squad, the deep-lying enforcer could generate much excitement if he were to make the move to SE25.

In other news, these Crystal Palace fans react to the club’s 2020/21 released list.

Ex-Leeds star refuses to rule out Diego Llorente exit - exclusive

Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome says that the club would be willing to sell Diego Llorente this summer provided the right bid is tabled.

Football Insider has claimed that the Whites are braced for big bids for the central defender this summer.

Rival Premier League clubs are said to hold an interest in signing Llorente after a fine first season in the top-flight.

The centre-back made 15 appearances in the league, scoring once, and he is also capable of playing at right-back and in defensive midfield.

Newsome thinks that Llorente could be available in the summer transfer window but only for the right price.

The Spain international has won eight caps and has a contract until 2024, while he is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “Again, it’s another difficult one, isn’t it? You know, he didn’t have a great start to his Leeds career, he was injured for quite a considerable amount of time. In the back end of the season, he’s shown what he’s about.

“He’s comfortable on the ball. He’s got a bit of pace about him. I think he’s still getting to grips with the physical side of the game in England, the set pieces and that kind of stuff. So, I’d be surprised if the club moved him on.

“But again, it’s another one of those. If a real big number comes in, and it’s put on the table, everybody’s for sale at a certain price. So it just depends what that number is.”

Llorente is a former Real Madrid player and he battled with injury throughout 2020/21, dealing with groin and hamstring problems.

Queenstown joins New Zealand's international venues

Queenstown will join New Zealand’s list of international venues by hosting a One-Day international against India next year, while a Super Max International will also feature on the tour

Lynn McConnell09-Jul-2002Queenstown will join New Zealand’s list of international venues by hosting a One-Day international against India next year, while a Super Max International will also feature on the tour. However, there will be no Boxing Day Test this summer. New Zealand Cricket released the tour schedule today. The only two Tests in New Zealand over the summer will be in Wellington and Hamilton before Christmas.New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden said the decision on the Boxing Day Test was not a precedent for future seasons. It had been necessary because India needed to be home for the World Cup preparation by January 16 and to fit that in New Zealand felt it was best that both teams have seven ODIs in succession as part of their World Cup build-up rather than splitting the ODIs around the Tests.”We will go back to it next year,” Snedden said.He added that there were also financial reasons for not playing ODIs before Christmas. The two Test, seven ODI tour will start with a Max international being played at a venue still to be decided. The last time a Max international was played was for the opener of the West Indies tour at Christchurch in 1999/00.Queenstown which was the spectacular venue for the Otago team’s three-day match against England earlier this year, will host an ODI on January 4, the height of the holiday season in the summer resort.”The ideal situation for us is to ensure that every region gets an international game.”At that time of year there are no students in Dunedin and most people from Dunedin are in Central Otago so Carisbrook was not a viable option.”Alexandra is not easy to get up to the required standard and the Queenstown Events Centre are keen because it will take some effort to get it to standard but we are confident that can be done,” he said.”It is important that we get international cricket into the Otago region.”There is a fairly large holiday population in Central Otago then and it is a ground with a beautiful backdrop,” he said.Hamilton will host its first ODI under lights with the final game of the tour on January 14.”They’ve put a huge investment into the ground in Hamilton. We considered Taupo but it was Northern Districts’ wish that Hamilton be supported. All the reports are that the lights will be good for a night game,” he said. The State Shield has been timed to coincide with New Zealand’s departure to South Africa and most players will be involved in the domestic one-day series before leaving. The selectors also asked that Shield games be scheduled after the one-day series so they could assess any players who may have come into consideration during the first part of the State Shield. The first Test of the tour will be at the Basin Reserve in Wellington from December 12-16 and the second Test will be in Hamilton from December 19-23.The itinerary is:Super Max International at TBA, December 4; India v Central Districts at Napier, Dec 6-8; 1st Test at Wellington, Dec 12-16; 2nd Test at Hamilton, Dec 19-23; 1st ODI at Auckland (day/night), Dec 26; 2nd ODI at Napier, Dec 29; 3rd ODI at Christchurch (day/night), January 1; 4th ODI at Queenstown, Jan 4; 5th ODI at Wellington (day/night), Jan 8; 6th ODI at Auckland (day/night), Jan 11; 7th ODI at Hamilton (day/night), Jan 14.

AVFC: Fans react to NSWE information

NSWE reportedly changed tact when it comes to Aston Villa’s summer transfer business, according to Birmingham Live.

And, as to be expected, the inside information on Villa’s owners has got a lot of supporters talking on social media.

Birmingham Live were told by a Villa insider last month that Villa had planned for a quiet summer transfer window.

However, as we now know, it has been anything but, with Emiliano Buendia joining on a club-record deal, Ashley Young returning and a £25m offer for Emile Smith Rowe rejected just over a week after the window officially opened.

NSWE had a change in thought when it comes to off-field dealings, as they reportedly see a real opportunity to catch and leapfrog the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham.

Villa fans react

Ashley Preece of the Birmingham Live shared the story on Wednesday afternoon.

@villareport shared Preece’s claims on Twitter that evening, which led to these Villa fans heaping praise on the club’s hierarchy and one describing the news as ‘exciting’.
